Add-on levetiracetam in children and adolescents with refractory epilepsy: results of an open-label multi-centre study.

PURPOSE: To study the efficacy and tolerability of add-on levetiracetam in children and adolescents with refractory epilepsy. METHODS: In this prospective multi-centre, open-label, add-on study, 33 children aged 4-16 years (median 8.5 years) with epilepsy refractory to at least two antiepileptic drugs were treated with levetiracetam in addition to their present treatment regimen with a follow-up of 26 weeks. The starting dose of 10 mg/kg/day was increased with 2-week steps of 10 mg/kg/day, if necessary, up to a maximum dose of 60 mg/kg/day. RESULTS: Retention rate was 69.7% after 26 weeks on

Climacteric symptoms among Japanese women and men: comparison of four symptom checklists.

OBJECTIVES: To explore whether Japanese kōnenki (climacteric) symptoms are unique to women or are experienced by men, to compare common symptom indices, and to explore the relationship between symptoms and soy intake. METHODS: Two-week recall of 54 symptoms, an eight-item food frequency questionnaire, and views about kōnenki were collected from 60 individuals in Kanazawa, Japan. Factor analysis identified kōnenki-associated symptom groupings; Blatt-Kupperman, Simplified Menopausal Index, Lock, and Kanazawa symptom scores were calculated; and sex and kōnenki status differences were tested. Unipolar depression with racing thoughts: a bipolar spectrum disorder?

Major depressive disorder (MDD) with racing/crowded thoughts is understudied. Kraepelin classified 'depression with flight of ideas' in the mixed states of his manic-depressive insanity. The aim of the study was to test whether MDD with racing/crowded thoughts was close to bipolar disorders. Consecutive 379 bipolar-II disorder (BP-II) and 271 MDD depressed outpatients were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Hypomania Interview Guide, and the Family History Screen, by a senior psychiatrist in a private practice. Intra-depression hypomanic symptoms were systemati

Gray Matter Structural Asymmetry and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Left-right brain asymmetry is an important feature of human neuroanatomy, with implications for cognition, behavior, and vulnerability to mental disorders. Despite evidence for lateralized brain sensitivity to hormonal fluctuations, the cortical and subcortical asymmetry profile of individuals with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a hormone-related mood disorder associated with alterations in brain structure, remains unexplored. METHODS: In this study, a total of 68 females with PMDD and 51 healthy females underwent magnetic resonance imaging during the luteal phase of th

A case report of pregabalin misuse leading to drug dependence.

Pregabalin misuse and dependence have become emerging concerns in recent years, particularly in regions where traditional drug-related crimes have been curbed, prompting users to seek alternative substances. Although pregabalin is primarily used for treating conditions such as epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and generalized anxiety disorder, its sedative and euphoric effects make it prone to misuse. This case report presents a 20-year-old male who developed pregabalin dependence after using the drug intermittently at escalating doses over a year. He experienced withdrawal symptoms including palpit

The comorbid network characteristics of anxiety and depressive symptoms among Chinese college freshmen.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the interplay between anxiety and depressive symptoms in Chinese college freshmen using the causal system perspective (CSP), which differs from the traditional common cause perspective (CCP) by providing an alternative explanation by attributing comorbidity to direct interactions among symptoms. METHODS: A convenience sample of 2,082 Chinese college freshmen (39.51% male, Mage = 18.61) from a normal university completed the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Network analysis was conducted

Network analysis of anxiety and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in older adults in the United Kingdom.

The health crisis caused by COVID-19 in the United Kingdom and the confinement measures that were subsequently implemented had unprecedented effects on the mental health of older adults, leading to the emergence and exacerbation of different comorbid symptoms including depression and anxiety. PTSD symptoms and tinnitus severity: An analysis of veterans with posttraumatic headaches.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the top service-connected disabilities within the Veterans Health Administration. Extant research shows that there is considerable overlap between tinnitus-related distress and PTSD, including sleep difficulty, irritability, hyperarousal, and concentration problems. However, no studies have prospectively examined the relationship between the two disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine that relationship. METHOD: Participants (N = 112) with posttraumatic headache completed measures of tinnitus and PTSD. Correlati

METHODOLOGY: The study aimed to explore the neurocognitive profile of patients in their euthymic phase. We matched 30 patients diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder (BD) in the age range of 20-40 years
