New screening methods for donor eye-bank eyes.

PURPOSE: Current methods of screening donor eyes for corneal transplantation are not always effective in excluding corneas with abnormal topography. We used the Orbscan to determine whether corneal-thickness maps could be used as a technique for donor tissue screening. METHODS: Forty eye-bank eyes were measured with the Orbscan, and a corneal-thickness map was generated. Average central pachymetry measurements from each map were compared with the thinnest midperipheral thickness reading. Two eyes from a donor who had photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and two eyes from a donor with keratoconus…

Dissolve or Evaporate: an Update to Treatment Modalities in Band-like Keratopathy.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Treatment modalities for band keratopathy (BK), which consists of calcium phosphate deposits in Bowman's layer and upper corneal stromal lamellae, are ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA) chelation and phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK). In this retrospective study, we compared the effectiveness and the recurrence rate for both methods. ABSTRACT: PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with idiopathic BK who had been treated with EDTA-chelation or PTK and who had no other relevant corneal disease. Of 81 patients, 34 were treated with …

Retreatment strategies following Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE): In vivo tissue responses.

With any refractive correction, including Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), there may be a residual refractive error that requires a retreatment. Here, we investigated the tissue responses following various retreatment procedures in a rabbit model of SMILE. All rabbits underwent a -6.00D correction with SMILE. Two weeks later, they underwent -1.00D enhancement by: (i) VisuMax Circle, followed by excimer ablation (S+C); (ii) secondary SMILE anterior to the primary procedure (S+SE); or (iii) surface ablation (S+P), and were examined for 28 days. S+P induced corneal edema and haze, and

Management of coincident corneal disease and cataract.

The status of the cornea is crucial to a good outcome with cataract extraction. Preexisting corneal disease must be managed appropriately to get the high-quality results that we have come to expect with cataract surgery. It is now more common to perform cataract surgery on patients with previous corneal refractive surgery, and in these patients intraocular-lens power calculation is more challenging. Complications following cataract surgery and intraocular-lens implantation that involve the cornea are uncommon because of advances in surgical techniques. Corneal complications can include mechani

Nemaline bodies of skeletal muscle fibers of the neck in a case of pharyngeal cancer.

Nemaline bodies were found in the regenerating muscle fibers of the neck of a 74-year-old Japanese male with pharyngeal cancer. Histologically, the nemaline bodies were needle-shaped structures and hematoxophilic with phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin stain. Electron microscopic examination suggested that they arise as extensions of the Z bands. Although nemaline bodies occur in a variety of pathological conditions other than nemaline myopathy, their occurrence in regenerating skeletal muscle fibers invaded by cancer has not been reported previously. The pathogenesis of the nemaline body format
