Ophthalmomyiasis externa: three cases caused by Oestrus ovis larvae in Turkey.

Ocular involvement of parasitic infections includes external, internal and orbital ophthalmomyiasis. Oestrus ovis (sheep botfly) is the most common cause of ophthalmomyiasis externa. Living in warm climates, particularly in agricultural districts, is a risk factor. Although external ophthalmomyiasis can be treated by removal of the infecting larva(e) and topical drug treatment, the risk remains of its presence leading to further contamination for other people. We describe three cases of external ophthalmomyiasis due to infestation with the first instar larvae of O. ovis An awareness of larval …

Freeze-tolerance of Trichinella muscle larvae in experimentally infected wild boars.

Freeze-tolerance of encapsulated Trichinella muscle larvae (ML) is mainly determined by Trichinella species, but is also influenced by host species, the age of the infection and the storage time and temperature of the infected meat. Moreover, the freeze-tolerance of the encapsulated species appears to be correlated to the development of thick capsule walls which increases with age. An extended infection period and the muscle composition in some hosts (e.g. herbivores) may provide freeze-avoiding matrices due to high carbohydrate contents. The present experiment compares freeze-tolerance of Tri…

Serodiagnosis of toxocariasis by ELISA using crude antigen of Toxocara canis larvae.

Toxocariasis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by larvae of ascarid nematodes of dogs or cats, Toxocara canis or T. cati. Diagnosis of human toxocariasis currently relies on serology that uses T. canis excretory-secretory antigen to detect specific IgG antibodies by ELISA. We investigated the serodiagnostic efficacy of ELISA using crude antigen of T. canis larvae (TCLA). Serum specimens of 64 clinically confirmed toxocariasis, 115 healthy controls, and 119 other tissue-invading helminthiases were screened by ELISA using TCLA. The ELISA using TCLA showed 92.2% (59/64 patient samples) sensitivity a…

Antimicrobial activity of Scutia buxifolia against the honeybee pathogen Paenibacillus larvae.

The honeybee disease American foulbrood (AFB) is a serious problem since its causative agent (Paenibacillus larvae) has become increasingly resistant to conventional antibiotics. One of the feasible alternative treatments being used for control of this disease are plants extracts. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of crude extract and fractions of Scutia buxifolia against six Paenibacillus species, including P. larvae, and its potential use for the control of AFB. In vitro activity of S. buxifolia samples against Paenibacillus species were evaluated by the disk diffusion a…

Toxicological effect of MPA-CdSe QDs exposure on zebrafish embryo and larvae.

Cadmium selenium (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanocrystals that hold wide range of applications and substantial production volumes. Due to unique composition and nanoscale properties, their potential toxicity to aquatic organisms has increasingly gained a great amount of interest. However, the impact of CdSe QDs exposure on zebrafish embryo and larvae remains almost unknown. Therefore, the lab study was performed to determine the developmental and behavioral toxicities to zebrafish under continuous exposure to low level CdSe QDs (0.05-31.25 mg L(-1)) coated with mercaptopropioni…

An outbreak of trichinellosis with detection of Trichinella larvae in leftover wild boar meat.

The clinical diagnosis of trichinellosis can be difficult due to lack of pathognomonic signs or symptoms. In Korea, since the first report of human infection by Trichinella spiralis in 1997 following the consumption of raw badger meat, there have been occasional trichinellosis outbreaks. We describe an outbreak of 12 cases of trichinellosis in Korea and implicate raw wild boar meat as the culprit. A total of 27 larvae of Trichinella (0.54 larvae per gram of meat) were recovered from the leftover raw wild boar meat.

Molecular characterization of Anisakis larvae from fish caught off Sardinia.

Anisakis spp. larvae are parasitic, and potentially zoonotic, nematodes transmitted by marine fish and cephalopods, which are the main intermediate hosts of the third larval stage. The accidental consumption of infected raw or poorly cooked fish may cause gastroenteric diseases and allergies in humans. The aim of the present study was to use polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to define the occurrence, species variability, and host preferences of Anisakis spp. larvae in fish caught off the coast of Sardinia. Necropsy was used on 285 samples; 552 Anisak…

Dynamic accumulation and redistribution of methylmercury in the lens of developing zebrafish embryos and larvae.

Neurotoxic methylmercury compounds are widespread in the environment and human exposure worries many communities worldwide. Despite numerous studies addressing methylmercury toxicity, the detailed mechanisms underlying its transport and accumulation, especially during early developmental stages, remain unclear. Zebrafish larvae are increasingly used as a model system for studies of vertebrate development and toxicology. Previously, we have identified the lens epithelium as the primary site for cellular mercury accumulation in developing zebrafish larvae (Korbas et al. in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA…

Mechanical recovery of inhibited cyathostomin larvae from equine intestinal tissue.

The Stomacher is very widely used in food and medical research for extracting tissues. To determine whether nematode larvae were disrupted by the Stomacher, L3 larvae of Haemonchus contortus were homogenised for up to 40 min at full power but no larval disruption occurred. Therefore, tissue from the mucosa and submucosa of the caecum of horses collected from a licenced abattoir was treated to determine whether inhibited cyathostomin larvae could be extracted. The optimum time on full power for a 10-g sample was 20 min, and in three out of five caecal samples from different horses, significantl…

Efficacy of bioactive compounds from Curcuma aromatica against mosquito larvae.

With the development of resistance to conventionally used synthetic insecticides, vector management has become acutely problematic. Hence more attention has been focused on botanicals. Therefore our present study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of extracts from rhizomes of Curcuma aromatica against the larvae of filariasis vector mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus employing standard WHO procedure at Mysore. The soxhlet extraction was carried out using non-polar organic solvent, petroleum ether. The efficacy of petroleum ether extract seemed to be effective with LC(50) and LC(90) values of 1…

Localizing organomercury uptake and accumulation in zebrafish larvae at the tissue and cellular level.

Using synchrotron x-ray fluorescence mapping, we have examined the uptake and localization of organic mercury in zebrafish larvae. Strikingly, the greatest accumulation of methyl and ethyl mercury compounds was highly localized in the rapidly dividing lens epithelium, with lower levels going to brain, optic nerve, and various other organs. The data suggest that the reported impairment of visual processes by mercury may arise not only from previously reported neurological effects, but also from direct effects on the ocular tissue. This novel approach is a powerful tool for directly investigatin…

Viability and infectivity of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae in frozen horse tissue.

Many aspects of the biology and epidemiology of Trichinella infection in the horse are poorly understood, including survival of Trichinella spp in horse muscle. In this study, we have assessed the freeze tolerance of T. spiralis in horse meat stored at 5, -5, and -18 degrees C for 1 day to 24 weeks. Results demonstrate a steady reduction in the number of live ML recovered from the cold stored meat samples. On Day 1, recovery of live larvae had been reduced by 18.6%, 50.1%, and 37.2%, and by 4 weeks, recovery of larvae had been reduced by 65.4%, 66.5%, and 96.2% in samples stored at 5, -5, and …

Limonoids as larvicidal components against mosquito larvae (Aedes aegypti Linn.).

The study focussed on four limonoids (calodendrolide, harrisonin, pedonin and pyroangolensolide) as larvicidal components against mosquito 2nd instar larvae of the species Aedes aegypti Linn. senso stricto. Since pyroangolensolide is close to calodendrolide in structure, it was synthesized through reduction of calodendrolide with chromium(II) chloride in acetone. Harrisonin and pedonin were extracted with cold methanol from the root bark of Harrisonia abyssinica while calodendrolide was extracted with the same solvent from the root bark of Calodendrum capense. The structure of pyroangolensolid…

Effect of salinity on temephos toxicity to larvae of Aedes sollicitans (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes sollicitans (Walker) (Diptera: Culicidae) is an important vector of eastern equine encephalitis as well as several other mosquito-borne brain fevers. The larvae are salt-tolerant and develop in salt marshes with highly varying salinity. The effect of salinity on the toxicity of one of the major larvicidal organophosphates, temephos, was evaluated in two groups of larvae raised either in freshwater or water with salinity ranging from 1 to 3.5%. When larvae were raised in freshwater, low salinity (1-3.5%) decreased the toxicity and high salinity (5%) increased the toxicity. In contrast, sa…

Rearing larvae of Lucilia sericata for chronic ulcer treatment--an improved method.

Larval therapy is a biological 'dressing' for chronic ulcers which is used for debridement, to initiate healing and to reduce bacteria and unpleasant odour. One condition for being able to employ larval therapy is access to disinfected larvae of good quality. We therefore started rearing Lucilia sericata larvae in 1998. Rearing necrophagous larvae in a hospital setting makes it essential to control odour. The improvement of the method includes the use of a controlled, humid, warm environment with artificial light and inexpensive disposable material, as well as the use of ready-made, constantly…

A case of fatal hyperinfective strongyloidiasis with discovery of autoinfective filariform larvae in sputum.

The autoinfective filariform larva of Strongyloides stercoralis causes hyperinfection in immunosuppressed hosts. Here we report on the case of a male patient who was admitted to the emergency room at Gwangju Veterans Hospital with a complaint of dyspnea, and who was receiving corticosteroid therapy for asthma. Many slender larvae of S. stercoralis with a notched tail were detected in Papanicolaou stained sputum. They measured 269 +/- 21.2 microm in length and 11 +/- 0.6 microm in width. The esophagus extended nearly half of the body length. The larvae were identified putatively as autoinfectiv…

Effect of ultraviolet radiation on the hatchability and survival of eggs and larvae of sheep nematode.

The hatchability of sheep gastrointestinal nematode eggs exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the activity of the hatched larvae were examined. Hatchability decreased with increasing exposure to radiation. The difference in hatchability of eggs irradiated for 15,30 and 60 minutes were highly significant (p < 0.01 dalpha = 3.07, 3.24 and 3.75) compared with the hatchability of the nonirradiated eggs. The life span of irradiated larvae was shortened, only 20% of those expose to UV radiation 60 minutes survive for 2 days as against 100% survival rate in the non-irradiated larvae. Batches of …

Laboratory evaluation of the insecticidal activity of camphor on the development of Oestrus ovis larvae.

The essential oil of E. globulus leaves or camphor against the maturation of Oestrus ovis larvae was evaluated at the laboratory conditions. Camphor at concentrations 1:0 and 1.1 showed 100% mortality rate. At concentrations of 1:2-1:6 the mortality rate ranged between 45-98%. On the other hand, 38 or 27.5% of the developed pupae emerged to adults but only 36.8% of them were fertile. Camphor is safely used in Medicine. So, it is recommended in controlling the zoonotic myiasis producer, O. ovis.
