We present our experience in treatment of patients with carotid-jugular fistulas for a three years period. Three of those patients had congenital fistulas and one had acquired (posttraumatic) fistula. Signs and symptoms include: pulsatile neck mass, systolic murmur, thrill, dilated superficial veins. Radiation proctopathy can be a disabling delayed outcome of radiation therapy directed at pelvic malignancies. Rectal outlet bleeding can be severe enough to result in anemia and transfusion dependency. Bleeding typically develops from 6 months to 1 year after completion of radiation therapy and is caused by friable mucosal angioectasias. PURPOSE/METHODS: We studied a patient with subretinal myiasis with pain and rapidly progressive visual loss and found that prompt photocoagulation resulted in marked visual improvement. The use of dynamic ultrasound B-scan to detect retinal tears in spontaneous vitreous haemorrhage is described. A 6-month prospective study was undertaken of non-diabetic patients who presented with spontaneous vitreous haemorrhage, in whom the fundus could not be visualised and in whom a rhegmatogenous aetiology was suspected. Patients were followed up at least weekly with repeat B-scans until adequate fundus visualisation was possible. Retinopathy of prematurity continues to be a formidable problem for the premature infant, his or her family, and physicians and nurses caring for the child. In the past year, advances have been made in screening for serious retinopathy and in our understanding of the long-term visual function of eyes that had retinopathy during the infants' neonatal period. Further work has also been undertaken in defining the role of laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy in the treatment of threshold disease.

Eight (8) cases of solitary choroidal hemangioma associated with macular serous retinal detachment were treated with Argon green laser photocoagulation. The neoplasms were essentially eliminated and the retinas reattached. The visual acuity was improved unless the hemangioma involved the foveal region. No relapse occurred during a follow-up of 6 to 32 months. The laser parameters adopted were: spot size 300-400 microns, exposure 0.2-1.0 sec, and output 0.3-0.5 W.

A diode laser, which emitted infrared radiation at a wavelength of 810 nm, was used to perform trabecular photocoagulation in a human eye due for enucleation for malignant melanoma. Corneal argon laser photocoagulation (CALP) was used in 13 patients to treat deep stromal vascular ingrowth. Hemisplenectomy was performed with the scalpel in 12 mongrel dogs. The blood vessels of the splenic pedicle were temporarily clamped. In a six-dog group, hemostasis was obtained by CO2 laser and residual bleeding was controlled by sutures. In the other six dogs, group hemostasis was performed only by sutures. The surgical procedure was free of mortality. No hematological changes were observed in both groups. Histological studies revealed a better hemostatic effect and intensive necrosis of the splenic parenchyma in the lasered group compared with the sutured group.
