Effects of trauma exposure on anger, aggression, and violence in a nonclinical sample of men.

This study assessed the impact of traumatic exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on anger, aggression, and violence among civilian male college students. Results suggest that civilian men who have been exposed to a potentially traumatic event (PTE) and report symptoms of PTSD indicate more trait anger, more internal anger and hostility, and more aggression and violence than men who do not report symptoms of PTSD. Results are contrasted to those found in clinical samples of male veterans with PTSD and discussed in terms of understanding and treating anger and aggression in

The double-barreled burden of child abuse and current stressful circumstances on adult women: The kindling effect of early traumatic experience.

Child sexual abuse and child physical abuse were compared to assess how these experiences might both positively predict and sensitize women to the effects of current stress exposure, assessed in terms of psychosocial resource loss (e.g., personal and interpersonal resources). Resource loss was in turn, hypothesized to increase later depressive mood and posttraumatic stress disorder severity. Participants were 176 low-income women (58% African American, 38% European American), interviewed twice over 6 months. Child sexual abuse predicted increases in resource loss, which then predicted posttrau

Association of small life events with self reports of tic severity in pediatric and adult tic disorder patients: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical experience suggests an association between stressful life events and fluctuations in symptom severity of tic disorder patients. The aim of the present study was to examine this possible relationship in a prospective longitudinal design. METHOD: Two groups of patients with tic disorder according to the research criteria of the Tourette Syndrome Classification Study Group were included in this study (Sept. 2001 through March 2002): a pediatric group aged from 7 through 16 years (N = 25) and an adult group aged 18 years and older (N = 32). During a 12-week period, participan

A prospective study on the course of anxiety after vestibular neuronitis.

OBJECTIVE: Critical life events trigger intense emotions. Anxiety is one of the most frequent of these emotions. It is unclear which factors determine the intensity and course of anxiety after a critical life event. METHOD: Anxiety levels of 92 patients in the 6 weeks after experiencing an acute vestibular disorder were examined. The influence of cognitive, personality and illness variables on the course of their anxiety was analyzed. RESULTS: Acute vestibular disorder is accompanied by intensive anxiety. In most patients, anxiety decreased as vertigo regressed. Catastrophizing and dysfuncti

Mental health effects of adolescent trauma exposure in a female college sample: exploring differential outcomes based on experiences of unique trauma types and dimensions.

Most studies on the psychological impact of trauma exposure focus on the response to a single type of trauma, with little or no attention paid to the contribution of prior traumatic experiences. The goal of this study was to disentangle some of the confounding effects of multiple trauma exposures by exploring the unique contribution to mental health outcomes made by specific types and dimensions of trauma. This report compares the psychological outcomes of college women who experienced different types of trauma during adolescence, including traumatic bereavement, sexual assault, and physical a

Chronic pain syndromes and their relation to childhood abuse and stressful life events.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood abuse, stressful life events, and depression have been repeatedly reported to correlate with chronic pain, but little is known about the mutual relationships among these variables. METHODS: Forty-three women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP), 40 female patients with chronic low-back pain (CLBP), and a female pain-free control group (n=22) were investigated by means of a semistructured interview assessing childhood sexual and physical abuse as well as stressful life events. Additionally, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used. For multivariate analyses, structured equat

The role of early adverse experience and adulthood stress in the prediction of neuroendocrine stress reactivity in women: a multiple regression analysis.

Sensitization of stress-responsive neurobiological systems as a possible consequence of early adverse experience has been implicated in the pathophysiology of mood and anxiety disorders. In addition to early adversities, adulthood stressors are also known to precipitate the manifestation of these disorders. The present study sought to evaluate the relative role of early adverse experience vs. stress experiences in adulthood in the prediction of neuroendocrine stress reactivity in women. A total of 49 women (normal volunteers, depressed patients, and women with a history of early abuse) underwe

Hunger: its impact on children's health and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Hunger, with its adverse consequences for children, continues to be an important national problem. Previous studies that document the deleterious effects of hunger among children cannot distinguish child from family hunger and do not take into account some critical environmental, maternal, and child variables that may influence child outcomes. This study examines the independent contribution of child hunger on children's physical and mental health and academic functioning, when controlling for a range of environmental, maternal, and child factors that have also been associated with

Cutting voices. Self-injury in three adolescent girls.

1. Adolescent girls with a trauma history discover that violence, in the form of cutting themselves, heeds a response from others when others do not listen to their speaking voices. 2. Cutting may begin as an effort to communicate psychological distress and a plea for relationship but becomes a developmental pathway to cutting as a form of regulating unbearable affect, indicating the need for early intervention. 3. Adults actively and genuinely listening to girls is a critical component for both prevention and intervention of cutting.

Life event stress and the association with spontaneous abortion in gravid women at an urban emergency department.

In this study, the authors hypothesized that life event stress is associated with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion. Using a nested case-control design in an emergency department (N = 970), stress was measured using a life event inventory and a sample drawn from R. B. Ness et al.'s (1999) Early Pregnancy Study. Gestational age at time of fetal loss served as a marker of chromosomal status. Women experiencing more than one life event used more alcohol and public assistance. Spontaneous abortion at 11 weeks or greater was associated with more life event stress (adjusted odds ratio 2.9, 9

[Psychoanalytic aspects of crisis and crisis intervention].

"Crisis" is defined as the lack of the development of defense- and/or coping-mechanisms in the conflict between drive-claims or narcissistic needs versus the influences of the super-ego and/or conditions of outside reality. The term crisis, introduced by Erich Lindemann (1944), characterizes a state which was already known to Sigmund Freud. Central to his thought was an antagonism between the pleasure principle dominating the unconscious and the reality principle being directed toward the outside world. Different possible causes of crises are for example sudden and unexpected intrusions in a l

Psychological adjustment of children with mild and moderately severe asthma.

The relationship between the severity and duration of asthma and psychological adjustment was investigated in 29 children with mild and 31 children with moderately severe asthma, who were compared with 60 healthy control children. The severity of asthma was evaluated using the Pearlman-Bierman classification. Psychological adjustment was measured using the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and a semi-structured interview. The results of the interviews indicated that regressive symptoms such as clinging, childish behaviour, dependence, and a demanding nature were widespread. Using the i

Stress, coping, and suicide risk in psychiatric inpatients.

The present study investigated the relationship between interpersonal problems, coping styles, and suicide risk. Seventy-one adult psychiatric inpatients completed a suicide risk scale, a measure of interpersonal problems, and a coping scale designed to measure eight coping styles. Patients admitted with a history of suicidal attempts were compared with patients admitted for other reasons. Interpersonal problems were found to be significantly and positively related to suicide risk. The coping style of "suppression" (tendency to avoid threatening or uncomfortable situations) was found to be sig

Retest reliability of scores on objective and projective measures of dependency: relationship to life events and interest interval.

The retest reliabilities of widely used objective and projective measures of dependency were assessed in a mixed-sex sample of undergraduates (54 women and 34 men). Subjects completed Hirschfeld and colleagues' (1977) Interpersonal Dependency Inventory (IDI) and Masling, Rabie, and Blondheim's (1967) Rorschach Oral Dependency (ROD) scale on two occasions separated by 16, 28, or 60 weeks. The IDI and ROD scale showed good retest reliability over 16 weeks in both men and women. However, the ROD scale did not show adequate retest reliability over longer periods in subjects of either sex. IDI scor
