Cephalometric analysis of parents of patients with cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and/or palate (CL ± P) or isolated cleft palate (CP) are the most common congenital malformations of the face. Although there have been advances in prenatal diagnosis and the discovery of genetic markers, there has been no breakthrough in the identification of parents at risk of giving birth to a child with a cleft. AIMS: To determine a possible phenotypic difference in the craniofacial morphology of parents of children with CL ± P and to investigate whether cephalometric analysis can help identify parents at risk of giving birth to a child with a cleft. METHODS: Cephal…

The aim of this case report is to describe a modification of the technique of temporalis transfer for patients with paralysis of the facial neve. Primary fixation of fascia lata strips to the medial canthus, angle of mouth, lips, and ala of nose, and later executing the orthodromic transfer of a relevant segment of the muscle are the modifications to be described. Symmetry of the face, mouth, eye closure, and smooth elevation of angle of mouth were the measured outcomes by the surgeon. Our refinement of the technique is easy to perform with good results.

Palisaded encapsulated neuroma on the lower lip: a case report.

Palisading encapsulated neuroma is a rare, benign, cutaneous nerve sheath tumor. It usually occurs as an asymptomatic solitary skin-colored papule and commonly affects the nose and cheeks. Sometimes, it involves other sites, including the shoulder, upper arm, and trunk, but rarely involves the oral mucosa, including that of the lip. In our case, a 63-year-old female patient complained of a pinkish rubbery nodule on her lower lip. Histopathologic examination demonstrated a well-circumscribed nodule encapsulated by connective tissue stroma in the dermis. The nodule consisted of palisading spindl…

Atypical Presentation of Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma of the Lip.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) of the salivary gland is a rare tumor that was first described by Skalova et al in 2010, and since then, only a few hundred cases have been reported in the literature. Prior to Skalova's report, MASC was histologically misclassified as acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), pleomorphic adenoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, or adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified. Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma has a low incidence rate overall, accounting for less than 0.3% of all salivary gland tumors. Histopathologic and cytogenic analysis of MASC is identical to secret

Thresholds for Safety of Cleft Lip Surgery in Premature Infants.

The purpose of this study was to delineate optimal age to perform unilateral or bilateral cleft lip repair in premature patients. The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric data set was queried for unilateral and bilateral cleft lip repairs performed between 2012 and 2017. Complications, readmissions, and reoperations were analyzed in the context of prematurity with appropriate statistics. Degree of prematurity was significantly associated with adverse events (p = 0.001, rs = 0.44). Premature patients with unilateral cleft lip had a significantly d…

Management of Oronasal Fistulas in Patients With Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: The oronasal fistula in cleft patients is one of the complications that can be found after primary surgeries due to a failure of healing of the surgical repair that causes the communication between the oral and nasal cavities. A number of procedures can be implemented to correct the fistula and it is not clear if a particular technique is the best to be recommended. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically analyze the scientific evidence regarding the treatment of oronasal fistulas located in the lingual-alveolar and labial-alveolar regions in patients with cleft lip and palat…

Serious complication as a result of lip augmentation with vitamin E.

Nowadays lip augmentation with FDA-approved fillers is becoming popular. However, because of financial concerns many patients seek for unregistered materials. Here, we report two cases who use vitamin E for lip augmentation. They experience severe infiltration and discharge less than one month after injection. Biopsy revealed lipogranuloma formation. They were treated with incision and drainage, antibiotic, and corticosteroids. Although these complications are usually difficult to treat, the patients had good clinical response and no recurrence in 5-month follow-up.
