BACKGROUND: Lip carcinomas are rare oral tumors, and there have been few reports of lip carcinoma in Japan.
METHODS: Of 914 patients with oral carcinomas treated between January 1980 and December 1998, 12 (1.3%) had lip carcinoma and 5 (0.5%) had lip mucosal carcinoma. We investigated the clinicopathological features of these 17 patients.

An anatomical study of the blood supply of the nose and upper lip was done on 10 specimens. This demonstrated the blood supply of an inferiorly based nasal flap, which was successfully used to gain access for an en bloc resection of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses, frontal sinuses, and nose. The "crossbow" incision and inferiorly based nasal flap facilitate the tridimensional excision of lesions in the anterior base of the skull, the midline portion of middle base of the skull, and the paranasal sinuses.

A 32-year-old female underwent an extracapsular dissection for a pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the parotid gland. The term "problem site" is based on a constellation of factors including the disease itself, the anatomic site, the resulting excision defect and choice of the most appropriate wound closure technique. Typical problem sites are the nose, eyelids, hands (fingers and nails) and the anogenital region, each of which is a functional-aesthetic entity. As dermatologic surgeons become even more experienced in plastic and reconstructive surgery, the term"problem sites" will be used less often.

We reviewed 117 consecutive patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lip. The retrospective review includes age, race, location, risk factors, TNM classification, histologic differentiation, treatment methods, recurrent disease, site of recurrence, and follow-up status. RATIONALE: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that can develop in the oral and maxillofacial region. OF is more common in females and has a marked predilection for the mandible, occurring rarely in the maxilla. Lesions grow slowly and are usually asymptomatic until growth produces an obvious swelling, pain, paresthesia, and facial deformity. With low rates of recurrence, treatment is usually curettage or resection. Very large lesions that invade other organs and that cannot be completely removed should be excised conservatively.

We report an unusual case of an extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (EMZL) arising in the labial minor salivary gland in an immunocompetent 11-year-old boy. The initial histopathologic review favored localized amyloidosis.
