The Public Health Burden of Lymphatic Malformations in Children: National Estimates in the United States, 2000-2009.

OBJECTIVE: Describe inpatient resource utilization trends in children with lymphatic malformations using a national database. DATA SOURCE: Kids' inpatient database, years 2000-2009. METHODS: Subjects included children 18 years and under with International Classification of Diseases (ICD), 9th revision code: 228.1-lymphangioma, any site. Data elements were extracted and used to calculate related inpatient costs and trended over time. RESULTS: No significant increase in admission rates was noted over time, p = 0.5128. Average total charges per admission were $30,995. There is a clear and incr

Successful Treatment of Macroglossia Due to Lymphatic Malformation With Sirolimus.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of sirolimus therapy in a child with macroglossia due to lymphatic malformation. METHODS: Sirolimus treatment was applied to the patient with an initial dosing of 0.8 mg/m2 per dose, administered orally, twice daily at approximately 12-hour intervals. RESULTS: After 9 months of sirolimus therapy, there was a nearly complete resolution of lymphatic malformation. The last evaluation was performed 6 months after withdrawal of treatment, and the lesion had almost completely resolved. CONCLUSION: This article presents a novel approach to the tr

Navigation-assisted sclerotherapy of orbital venolymphatic malformation: a new guidance technique for percutaneous treatment of low-flow vascular malformations.

Percutaneous sclerotherapy of orbital low-flow vascular malformations requires precise procedural guidance. For the treatment of a patient with an orbital venolymphatic malformation, we sought to optimize guidance by combining navigation assistance for needle placement with intralesional contrast medium injection for assessment of venous drainage. By using a surgical navigation system (Vector Vision, BrainLAB, Munich, Germany), multiplanar target lesion visualization was performed after fusion of CT and MR imaging data, which allowed precise puncture planning.

Efficacy of Bleomycin-Lauromacrogol Foam in Pediatric Macrocystic Lymphatic Malformations With and Without Intracapsular Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Sclerotherapy is purportedly less effective in patients with hemorrhagic than with non-hemorrhagic lymphatic malformations (LMs). We aimed to compare the efficacy of bleomycin-lauromacrogol foam (BLF) sclerotherapy in the treatment of macrocystic LMs with and without intralesional hemorrhage. METHODS: Fifty-five children with macrocystic LMs admitted to the Pediatric Surgery Department were retrospectively included. The patients were allocated into a hemorrhage group (23 cases) or a non-hemorrhage group (32 cases) based on the occurrence of an intracapsular hemorrhage. The diagnos

Clinical and Imaging Outcomes of Doxycycline Exchange Sclerotherapy for Lymphatic Malformations.

PURPOSE: To evaluate serial doxycycline exchanges (SDEs) to treat lymphatic malformations (LMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients undergoing LM sclerotherapy with SDEs at the authors' tertiary care academic institution from April 2003 through March 2023. The primary outcome measure was change in symptoms between pretreatment and posttreatment clinical notes. Secondary outcomes included percent change in lesion volume measured from imaging studies and 30-day adverse events. RESULTS: Forty-six patients (25 males [54.3%]; mean age at presentation, 15 years ± 22) rec

Autophagy-dependent expression of osteopontin and its downstream Stat3 signaling contributes to lymphatic malformation progression to lymphangiosarcoma.

Lymphatic malformation (LM) is a vascular anomaly from lymphatic endothelial cells (ECs), and a fraction of the patients could progress to the deadly malignant lymphangiosarcoma (LAS). Using genetic tools to delete an essential autophagy gene Rb1cc1/FIP200 or its mutation specifically blocking its autophagy function, we demonstrated that autophagy inhibition abrogated LM progression to LAS although not affecting LM formation in our recently developed mouse model of LAS. Analysis of the mouse models in vivo and vascular tumor cells in vitro showed that autophagy inhibition reduced vascular tumo

Long-Term Follow-Up of Lymphatic Malformations in Children Treated with Sildenafil.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are challenging to treat. Reports on the benefits of sildenafil for LM management have been mixed. This study evaluated long-term clinical outcomes of pediatric LM patients after sildenafil treatment. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on pediatric LM patients treated with sildenafil in the past 5 years. Patients were also contacted to complete a survey of comprehensive questions about their LM after sildenafil and subsequent interventions. RESULTS: Of 12 patients identified, 10 (83.3%) participated in the follow-up survey

Treatment of complex periorbital venolymphatic malformation in a neonate with a combination therapy of sirolimus and prednisolone.

Venolymphatic malformations (VLMs) are vascular anomalies consisting of both veins and lymph vessels. A 2-week-old newborn presented with large VLMs on the left forehead, temple, preauricular area, and orbit. Patient was at imminent risk for permanent vision loss due to a localized mass effect. Surgical excision or debulking was contraindicated due to its complexity and proximity to the left eye, and the patient failed to respond to the sildenafil treatment and sclerotherapy. Patient was subsequently started on oral sirolimus 0.8 mg/m(2) twice daily in combination with prednisolone 2 mg/kg dai

Efficacy of ultrasonography in lymphatic malformations: diagnosis, treatment and follow-up: a case report.

Lymphatic malformation (LM) is a localized and rare benign anomaly of the lymphatic system. Surgery is the primary form of treatment, but total resection is difficult and generally not possible. The least invasive and most effective form of treatment is injection sclerotherapy with sclerosing agents. Here, we report a case of LM in a baby, detected at prenatal ultrasound. The aim of this report is to assess the importance of ultrasonography in the prenatal diagnosis, therapy and follow-up of LM's.
