Magnesium is required for over 300 enzyme systems and is critical for many cellular functions including oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis, DNA transcription and protein synthesis. Studies suggest that the modern Western diet and lifestyle may lead to magnesium deficiency, and this appears to be associated with a wide range of medical conditions. Magnesium deficiency decreases seizure thresholds in animal models of epilepsy and indeed low magnesium concentration in the perfusate is a common method of generating spontaneous epileptiform discharges from rat hippocampal slices. Magnesium is a …

There are many reasons to expect magnesium deficiency in patients with chronic congestive heart failure. Medical therapy, neurohormonal activation and decreased dietary intake could all contribute to low concentrations of serum and muscle magnesium. Although the ideal serum level of this electrolyte is not known, multiple studies have documented lower magnesium concentrations in patients with heart failure than in normal persons. Magnesium deficiency could theoretically produce hemodynamic deterioration and ventricular arrhythmias. These complications have been observed in animals and in patie…

Further, I have divided the group of 110 children with magnesium deficiency into two groups according to the other mental disorders that coexist with ADHD: 1) the group where hyperactivity coexists with disorders typical for developmental age such as enuresis, tics, separation anxiety, stuttering, selective mutism (63 child …

In earlier studies tumor growth was inhibited in rats that first were made magnesium-deficient and subsequently implanted with tumors. The objective of this study was to determine if the reverse sequence is also effective. Namely, is tumor growth inhibited if tumors first are established and then a magnesium deficiency imposed? Rats with palpable mammary adenocarcinomas, or with sham implants were pair-fed either a control or magnesium-deficient diet for 32 days. Rats were then killed and tumors, plasma and several tissues analyzed. In tumors from magnesium-depleted rats, growth was inhibited …

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age that remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy. Despite recent reductions in the SIDS rate attributed to placing the baby to sleep on his back, SIDS remains the most common cause of infant mortality between 1 month and 1 year of age in developed countries. This review concerns the current state of a hypothesis (1972) that magnesium deficiency, which causes sudden death in young mammals, is the major cause of SIDS. Numerous investigators have compar…

Studies were conducted to determine the effect of age on magnesium requirement and whether high dietary magnesium during the first 7 days of life would protect against subsequent magnesium deficiency. Day-old Japanese quail were fed a casein-gelatin diet containing either 300 (requirement) or 600 ppm Mg. Beginning on day 7, half of the birds in each group received either 160 (deficient) or 300 ppm Mg. In birds fed the requirement level during week 1 followed by the deficient diet, hemoglobin decreased on day 10, reaching the lowest value on day 14. Other adverse effects included mortality; sli…

Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that magnesium deficiency leads to hypertension, insulin resistance, and endothelial dysfunction, and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Given that cardiovascular disease and CKD share similar risk factors, the low magnesium status may also contribute to CKD progression. In fact, lower serum magnesium levels and lower dietary magnesium intake are associated with an increased risk of incident CKD and progression to end-stage kidney disease. Because these associations are independent of traditional risk factors, othe…

We report a case of magnesium deficiency associated with acetaminophen abuse. Metabolic studies showed that the patient's fractional excretion of magnesium was 12% when her serum magnesium level was 1.0 mg/dL. Renal biopsy demonstrated severe tubulointerstitial disease. The significant wasting of magnesium at a time when serum magnesium levels were depressed suggests renal magnesium wasting syndrome. This defect was temporally related to abuse of acetaminophen.

The present study aimed at testing the hypothesis of decreased erythrocyte magnesium content and magnesium deficiency in essential hypertension. Atomic absorption was used to measure the erythrocyte content of total magnesium in 50-year-old otherwise healthy white males with essential hypertension (n = 12, blood pressure (mean +/- SE) 155 +/- 4/109 +/- 2 mmHg) that had never been treated and in normotensive control subjects (n = 12, blood pressure 128 +/- 2/88 +/- 1 mmHg) matched for age, sex, race, height, weight and smoking habits. The erythrocyte magnesium content was significantly increase…

Background. Serum magnesium levels affect the concentration of circulating vitamin D in blood and subsequently it affects the immunity; thus … and asthma severity. Serum calcium levels were unaffected by that. Conclusion. Vitamin D and serum magnesium deficiency are highly prevalent in patients with asthma. Increased asthma severity, frequency of attacks, and exacerbation are associated with lower levels of one or both. Serum 25(OH)D and magnesium levels may serve as important markers of asthma severity.

The aim of this paper is to discuss, on the basis of an extensive literature review, the role of magnesium (Mg) in health and disease. Mg is an essential cation playing a crucial role in many enzyme systems. Quantitative Mg body stores are regulated by metabolic and hormonal effects on gastrointestinal absorption and renal excretion. Mg is a smooth muscle relaxant, dilates coronary arteries and peripheral vessels, exerts antiarrhythmic effects, may have a permissive effect on catecholamine actions and can play a role in various thrombogenic conditions. Today, hypomagnesemia has become a recogn

Magnesium plays a critical role in numerous metabolic functions, including all reactions involving adenosine triphosphate, and is thus essential for the production and use of energy. Magnesium imbalances are common in hospitalized patients, with magnesium deficiency occurring in 20% to 65% of critically ill patients. This article details the homeostatic mechanisms regulating magnesium, the functions of magnesium, and the causes, manifestations, and treatment of both hyper- and hypomagnesemia. Indications and guidelines for the therapeutic uses of magnesium are also reviewed.

Magnesium is one of the most wide-spread elements in nature. It is the fourth major cation in the human body (after Ca, Na and K), and the s … ere are several molecular and cellular actions of magnesium that explain clinical manifestations of magnesium deficiency or excess. Treatment of altered magnesium status depends on the clinical setting. Guidelines for therapy are given.
