BACKGROUND: Implantological procedures aimed at rehabilitating upper jaw edentulous patients (dental implant placement and/or maxillary sinus grafting) can sporadically result in sinusitis. In these patients, endoscopic sinus surgery is the most commonly employed treatment, but clinical scenarios and comprehensive management strategies are extremely heterogeneous across studies.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to systematically define treatment strategies and related success rates for sinusitis following dental implantation, detailing different current treatment choices and concepts.
METHODS: Adopting

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a common cause of unilateral sinus disease (USD), but can be challenging to diagnose due to nonspecific clinical presentations, potentially subtle to absent dental pathology on sinus computed tomography (CT), and underrepresentation in the sinusitis literature.
OBJECTIVE: Identify sinonasal clinical variables predictive of ODS in patients presenting with unilateral maxillary sinus opacification on sinus CT.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on 131 consecutive patients with USD and at least partial or complete maxillary sinus opacific

With chronic maxillary sinusitis the pathological changes in the diseased mucosa used to be considered irreversible, thus necessitating its radical removal, which is only possible with the Caldwell-Luc operation. The discovery of the reversibility of the pathology caused a shift from the Caldwell-Luc towards endonasal procedures, of which the inferior meatal antrostomy became the most widely used. Nasendoscopy, later combined with computed tomography, led to the development of the concept of the osteomeatal unit, and hence the functional endoscopic sinus surgery, which is concentrated round th…

The form, structural variations, sex variations (connected with zygosityz), right and left positions of the sinuses were studied according to the data obtained while measuring the contours of the frontal, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses in the cranial roentgenograms made in the frontal and sagittal projections. By means of the twin method, relationship of the hereditary and environmental influences on the sinus formation was estimated. The data obtained in 111 Ukrainians (30--60 years of age), inhabitants of Vinnitsa region, mono- and dizygote twins of both sex were used. Greater dimensions in

The genus Capnocytophaga was reported in the literature for the first time in 1979. Capnocytophaga are fusiform gram-negative, slowly growing bacteria that require a high pCO2. They belong to the normal buccal flora and they are reported as pathogens in infections of the periodontal region with progressive periodontitis and in septicaemia in patients with immunodeficiencies and buccal ulcerations. The present paper is the first to report Capnocytophaga sputigena as a pathogen in sinusitis. The patient presented a chronic maxillary sinusitis as a complication of a complicated tooth-extraction. …

The development of the paranasal or accessory sinuses begins very early in utero. In the newborn the ethmoidal sinus, which gives rise to all the other sinuses, as well as the maxillary sinus, can already be identified on x-rays. The frontal sinus appears as a triangle at the age of four and oversteps the supraorbital margin at the age of six. The sphenoidal sinus begins to excavate the concha sphenoidalis at the age of four and can be seen on x-rays at the age of eight, when it extends to the hypophyseal fossa. In the twelve-year-old child all sinuses almost reach their final sizes. However,

PURPOSE: Dislocation of implants into the maxillary sinus typically occurs during surgery or in the early postoperative period. This case study presents an instance of implant dislocation that occurred after 30 years under functional loading due to peri-implantitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An 87-year-old woman presented with a loosened fixed partial denture, revealing a missing implant in the maxillary left second molar site upon clinical examination. The patient showed no symptoms of sinusitis. Imaging confirmed the dislocation of the implant, along with a pathological radiodensity filling th

CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirm that the present rabbit model of dental maxillary sinusitis (dMxS) is reproducible and simulates human dental sinusitis with respect to initiation, progression and inflammation. It is applicable to further studies of sinusitis of odontogenic origin.
OBJECTIVES: To induce acute dMxS in rabbits by using their own oral microflora to create a periapical infection and to follow morphological, radiographic, bacteriological and histological changes to the sinus mucosa.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The experimental animals comprised 26 New Zealand White rabbits…

With increase of cases with mild chronic sinusitis, especially the cases combined with nasal allergy, endonasal sinus surgery has been substituted for Caldwell-Luc or some other modified sinus surgery in recent years. The classical inferior meatal antrostomy for maxillary sinusitis is one of the treatments of choice, though this opening is easily closed and is somewhat different from normal sinus physiology. In the middle meatal antrostomy, the opening was made via the inferior turbinate or the middle meatal wall perforated with nasal forceps. Reported here is a new technique for middle meatal…

The maxillary sinus is an uncommon site for mucoceles within the paranasal sinuses. In this study nine patients with maxillary sinus mucoceles are presented. Six of these patients were treated by open approaches, and three were treated by endoscopic drainage alone. For uncomplicated maxillary sinus mucoceles, endoscopic drainage appears to be a reasonable approach, whereas for more complicated cases extending outside the sinus, open approaches may be required.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the close proximity established between the maxillary sinus floor and posterior teeth roots apices by using cone-beam computed tomographic scanning.
METHODS: The relationship of maxillary sinuses and posterior teeth roots, which were divided into 2 groups, was analyzed using i-CAT Vision software (Imaging Sciences, Hatfield, PA). Group 1 included all root apices found in close contact with the maxillary sinus floor without sinus floor elevation, whereas group 2 included all root apices that were protruded within the sinus producing an elevation of th

This analysis examined the types of retreatment in failed sinus bone grafts due to the development of maxillary sinusitis. Reoperation was performed in 7 patients. The types of reoperation included infection management, reconstruction of the sinus roof using a pedicled buccal fat pad and collagen membrane, oroantral fistula closure, sinus bone graft using an autogenous bone graft, and implant placement. In one case, sinusitis developed 14 months after the reoperation, but it was managed by incision, drainage, and administration of antibiotics. All sinus bone grafts that were performed during t…

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a dilemma that occurred after a maxillary right lateral window sinus lift was performed. The patient developed a gnawing pain in the sinus region but manifested no signs of sinusitis, and the subjacent teeth were asymptomatic. Differentiating between a pain that could be originating in the maxillary sinus or adjacent premolars was problematic.
METHODS: After several weeks, a CT scan revealed no signs of sinusitis, despite the patient's belief that her discomfort was caused by her sinus lift. By the process of elimination, the decision was made to extract
