Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) and Loculated pneumothorax (LPNX) are both generally rare clinical and radiological conditions associated with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). We report for the first time clinical data and radiological chest CT imaging of two patients affected by COVID-pneumonia associated with early radiological findings of SPM and LPNX.

Dysphagia is a common complaint of patients seen at the outpatient clinic as well as at the emergency room. We report esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis (EIPD) as a cause of dysphagia that is less known by physicians and it is rarely described in the literature. EIPD is characterized by multiple, segmental or diffuse, flask-like outpouchings in the esophageal wall corresponding to dilated and inflamed excretory ducts of the submucosal esophageal glands. The underlying etiology remains unclear. Esophageal strictures, esophageal candidiasis and gastroesophageal reflux disease are often a

We report a 24-year-old man with anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene-5 (MDA5) antibody-positive dermatomyositis (DM) and interstitial lung disease (ILD) who developed spontaneous pneumomediastinum. By comparing serial thoracic high-resolution computed tomography scans, we demonstrated the distinct time course showing a paradoxical occurrence of pneumomediastinum despite a radiological improvement of ILD. Our case shows that pneumomediastinum in DM can occur regardless of associated ILD and it is a serious complication that should be considered in DM patients presenting with pulmonary

An unusual case is presented of a tourist who developed fatal cerebral air embolism, pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium while ascending from low altitude to Europe's highest railway station. Presumably the air embolism originated from rupture of the unsuspected bronchogenic cyst as a result of pressure changes during the ascent. Cerebral air embolism has been observed during surgery, in scuba diving accidents, submarine escapes and less frequently during exposure to very high altitude. People with known bronchogenic cysts should be informed about the risk of cerebral air embolism and surg

We report two occurrences of spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) complicating pneumonia in Japanese children infected with the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus (IV). General practitioners especially should suspect possible SPM when examining and treating children with the novel influenza accompanied by status asthmaticus or wheezing. The presented patients illustrate the specific clinical and radiological signs associated with SPM complicating pneumonia in children infected with A(H1N1)v.

Primary congenital pulmonary hypoplasia, defined as congenital pulmonary hypoplasia occurring in the absence of other congenital anomalies, is an exceedingly rare condition of unknown aetiology. We report on two cases that presented as severe progressive respiratory failure immediately after birth in siblings of a consanguinous marriage, and we postulate that a genetic aetiology may be responsible for the arrest of lung maturation in utero. The possibility of a genetic component to the aetiology has not been previously documented in the literature.

Radiolucencies in and around the liver may be caused by normal or abnormal accumulations of fat or gas. Computed tomography, which measures the differential photon absorption of tissue more accurately than does abdominal radiography, readily demonstrates interfaces between the liver and air or fat. The correlation of these two modalities in detecting and identifying hepatic radiolucencies is explored.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. While smoking-related lung cancers still account for most cases and cause approximately 100,000 deaths annually in the USA, smoking rates have been declining for decades. Lung cancer in never-smokers (LCINS), which tends to affect women and Asian populations, is now the fifth most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In 2023, over 20,000 lung cancer deaths in the USA were projected to occur in never-smokers, making LCINS the eighth leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the country. As the number of LCIN

BACKGROUND: Although pulmonary abnormalities have been recognized in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), their prevalence and clinical significance are not known.
AIM: To study the prevalence and clinical significance of pulmonary abnormalities in patients with IBD.
METHODS: Ninety-five non-consecutive patients with IBD (12 Crohn's disease, 83 ulcerative colitis; mean age 41.9 [SD 13] years; 47 women) were prospectively studied from January 2007 to March 2010. Pulmonary function tests (PFT) and high-resolution CT (HRCT) chest were performed in them. PFT were compared to those in

We report a rare case of multiple rheumatoid nodules that on chest CT demonstrated peripheral location with thin-walled cavity formation, rapid increase in size within several months, and complicating pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and subcutaneous emphysema due to bronchopleural fistula formation.

PURPOSE: To report four cases of subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum and pneumoperitoneum associated with the use of the Esophageal-Tracheal Combitube (ETC) during prehospital management of cardiac arrest.
CLINICAL FEATURES: Between September 1994 and April 1996, 1139 patients were resuscitated with the ETC and the semiautomated external defibrillator as part of the CPR protocol for prehospital management of cardiac arrest by basic emergency medical technicians. Eight of these patients presented with subcutaneous emphysema. Four of them, declared dead after arrival in the emergency room

BACKGROUND Endoscopic gastrointestinal surgery rarely leads to airway compromise, but when mediastinal emphysema or pneumoperitoneum caused by perforation occurs, it can result in acute respiratory failure under anesthesia. Since the underlying mechanisms differ from those of typical pulmonary causes, reporting such rare cases is valuable for raising awareness among anesthesiologists and clinicians, and for emphasizing the importance of understanding surgical progress and performing timely physical examinations. CASE REPORT A 60-year-old woman with a submucosal esophageal mass underwent submuc…

OBJECTIVES: To study chest computed tomography (CT) manifestations in neonates with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) to provide clues for early diagnosis of this disease.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data and chest CT scan results of neonates diagnosed with CGD from January 2015 to December 2022 at Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital.
RESULTS: Nine neonates with CGD were included, with eight presenting respiratory symptoms as the initial sign. Chest CT findings included: consolidation in all 9 cases; nodules in all 9 cases, characterized by multiple, va

OBJECTIVES: To develop a clinical guideline for structured assessment and uniform reporting of congenital lung abnormalities (CLA) on Computed Tomography (CT)-scans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted for articles describing CT-scan abnormalities of congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) and bronchogenic cyst (BC). A structured report using objective features of CLA was developed after consensus between a pediatric pulmonologist, radiologist and surgeon.
RESULTS: Of 1581 articles
