[Association of abreugraphic findings of the respiratory tract and clinical manifestations].

A retrospective study of hospital charts was conducted for the purpose of analysing the association of roent-genphotographs obtained routinely at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, since 1967, with the records of respiratory symptoms and pneumopathic diagnosis found in the medical case histories as from the patients' first clinical out-patient consultation at that hospital. For this purpose, 997 patients with abnormal pulmonary roentgenphotography findings were matched according to sex and age with the same number of controls (normal roentgenphotograp

The effect of SGLT2i on in-hospital acute heart failure risk in acute myocardial infarction patients-a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The roles of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) in acute heart failure (AHF) risk after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remain unclear. In this study, we explored the correlation between SGLT2i administration and short-term in-hospital AHF risk in AMI patients. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective, and observational study included 990 AMI patients comprising 386 non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and 604 segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients enrolled from January 2019 to March 2022. Demographic information, cl

Patient privacy versus protecting the patient and the health system from harm: a case study.

A 71-year-old man who presented to hospital with chest pain and a history of cardiovascular disease was repeatedly hospitalised over the course of a month for care that included multiple investigations, intensive care, transfer to and from a metropolitan hospital, discharge, and readmissions for collapse, hemiparesis, and vision change. The medical team excluded underlying disease related to his initial chest pain and subsequent neurological symptoms. A search for (undisclosed) prior hospitalisations revealed multiple previous admissions and invasive investigations at hospitals across Australi

Major Incident Hospital: Development of a Permanent Facility for Management of Incident Casualties.

INTRODUCTION: Preparation is essential to cope with the challenge of providing optimal care when there is a sudden, unexpected surge of casualties due to a disaster or major incident. By definition, the requirements of such cases exceed the standard care facilities of hospitals in qualitative or quantitative respects and interfere with the care of regular patients. To meet the growing demands to be prepared for disasters, a permanent facility to provide structured, prepared relief in such situations was developed. METHODS: A permanent but reserved Major Incident Hospital (MIH) has been develo

Understanding factors influencing the length of hospital stay among non-severe COVID-19 patients: A retrospective cohort study in a Fangcang shelter hospital.

As a novel concept of responding to disease epidemics, Fangcang shelter hospitals were deployed to expand the health system's capacity and provide medical services for non-severe COVID-19 patients during the outbreak in Wuhan. To give insights on patient management within Fangcang hospitals, we conducted a retrospective analysis to: 1) describe the characteristics of the patients admitted to Fangcang hospitals and 2) explore risk factors for longer length of stay (LOS). We enrolled 136 confirmed COVID-19 patients, including asymptomatic patients and those with mild symptoms, who were hospitali

Medico legal investigations into sudden sniffing deaths linked with trichloroethylene.

Sudden deaths attributed to sniffing trichloroethylene are caused by the abuse of this solvent which produces pleasant inebriating effects with rapid dissipation. In the event of repeated cycles of inhalation, a dangerous and uncontrolled systemic accumulation of trichloroethylene may occur, followed by central nervous system depression, coma and lethal cardiorespiratory arrest. Sometimes death occurs outside the hospital environment, without medical intervention or witnesses and without specific necroscopic signs. Medico legal investigations into sudden sniffing deaths associated with trichlo

Is hospitalization a missed opportunity to intervene on tobacco cessation?

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco use is associated with elevated morbidity and mortality, its use remains widespread among adults within the United States. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products are effective aids that improve rates of tobacco cessation. Many smokers interact with the medical system, such as during hospitalization, without their tobacco use addressed. Hospitalization is a teachable moment for patients to make health-related changes, including tobacco cessation. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of adult patients in a university-based patient-centered medical home from 2012

The Price of Remission: Modeling the Total Financial Burden, Quality-of-Life Impairment, and Healthcare Dependence in Lupus Compared With Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell Therapy.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease leading to chronic patient impairment, healthcare dependency, side effects from immunosuppressive drugs, and accumulation of medical costs. A single infusion of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy (CTCT) is currently expensive, approaching USD 500,000, but the lifetime costs of SLE, including medications, hospitalizations, travel, mental health effects, and lost income, may surpass this figure within years to over a decade, depending on disease severity. This study compares the medical, lifestyle, and quality-of-life financ

Three-Dimensional Printed Laryngoscopes as Allies Against COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an overload on the health care system on a global scale. Because the disease affects the respiratory system, patients may require ventilator equipment for breathing, and consequently, numerous tracheal intubations have been performed. The video laryngoscope is a medical device that aids this procedure. It is used by anesthesiologists to visualize the anatomical structures of the larynx during tube insertion. Unfortunately, many hospitals worldwide are unable to afford sufficient units of this medical device. To satisfy the high demand, low-cost alternatives emp

Addressing Infection Prevention and Control in the First U.S. Community Hospital to Care for Patients With Ebola Virus Disease: Context for National Recommendations and Future Strategies.

Health care personnel (HCP) caring for patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD) are at increased risk for infection with the virus. In 2014, a Texas hospital became the first U.S. community hospital to care for a patient with EVD; 2 nurses were infected while providing care. This article describes infection control measures developed to strengthen the hospital's capacity to safely diagnose and treat patients with EVD. After admission of the first patient with EVD, a multidisciplinary team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) joined the hospital's infection preventionists to

Direct and indirect costs for hospitalized patients with dengue in Southern Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is endemic with dengue, with frequent outbreaks and occurrence of severe disease. However, the economic burden of dengue is poorly quantified. Therefore, we conducted a cost analysis to assess the direct and indirect costs associated with hospitalized patients with dengue to households and to the public healthcare system. METHODS: From June 2017-December 2018, we prospectively enrolled children and adults with acute dengue hospitalized at the largest, public tertiary-care (1800 bed) hospital in the Southern Province, Sri Lanka. We administered a

Mobile computed tomography at the Munich Oktoberfest : From idea to implementation.

BACKGROUND: The Munich Oktoberfest, the largest folk festival in the world, attracts around 6.2 million visitors over 16-18 days. Some of the visitors exhibit certain risky behaviors, leading to a significantly increased number of medical emergencies during the festival. During Oktoberfest, the prehospital and clinical emergency services of the city are heavily strained, as one-third more ambulances are needed, and over 7000 patients must be treated on-site each year. Until 2022, there was no option for guideline-compliant radiological assessment on-site for patients with head or facial trauma
