Functional Imaging of Hippocampal Layers Using VASO and BOLD on the Next Generation (NexGen) 7T Scanner.

Spatial accuracy and venous biases are a central concern in mesoscale fMRI, with subcortical brain regions facing additional challenges due to lower sensitivity, high physiological noise, and complicated vasculature. Here, we optimized CBV VASO on the NexGen 7T scanner for layer-specific investigations of the human hippocampus. Both VASO and BOLD (from the same acquisition) detected significant hippocampal activation during an established autobiographical memory task. At the macroscale, activation patterns converged, showing pronounced memory task activation in the anterior hippocampus and con

Imagery Rescripting induced transient forgetting of negative autobiographical memories.

Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) is a promising intervention for treating emotional disorders associated with distressing autobiographical memories, but its impact on memory recall requires further investigation. This study, based on the retrieval competition hypothesis, proposes a previously overlooked theoretical mechanism, that the process of creating and rehearsing therapeutic imagery in ImRs may require the inhibition of original negative memory representations, thereby reducing their availability. We therefore adapted the retrieval-practice paradigm and conducted two laboratory intervention st

The functional neuroanatomy of event-based and time-based prospective memory, and its improvement.

Prospective memory anchors upcoming activities in future time and space either cued externally (event-based prospective memory) or internally (time-based prospective memory). It is key to remain autonomous and can be enhanced using incentives. To examine the neuronal underpinnings of prospective memory and any performance improvement, we randomly assigned 58 healthy older participants (60-75 years old, 36 women) to time-based and focal event-based prospective memory tasks using 7T-fMRI, with or without incentives. Event-based and time-based prospective memory differ in their functional neuroan

Protective roles of meditation practice and self-esteem on cognitive functions over time: findings from the Midlife in the United States study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive function is an important component of healthy ageing. However, it is unclear whether relaxation/meditation practices provide cognitive benefits, particularly in midlife and early late life. Meditative practices are associated with higher self-esteem, and self-esteem serves as a general protective factor for many health outcomes. The current study examines associations between meditation practice, self-esteem, and change over 10 years in midlife cognitive performance. METHODS: Data were from waves 2 (2003-2004) and 3 (2013-2014) of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS)

Neural correlates of repeated retrieval of emotional autobiographical events.

Understanding the neural correlates of repetitive retrieval of emotional events is critical in addressing pathological emotional processing, as repeated processing is central for a number of different therapeutic interventions. In the current study, single-trial functional brain activity was assessed in key regions implicated in episodic retrieval, including the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), anterior hippocampus, posterior hippocampus, and the posteromedial parietal cortex (i.e., posterior cingulate cortex and the precuneus) following repeated retrieval of pleasant and unpleasant autobiogra

Pondering on how great I am: Does rumination play a role in grandiose ideas?

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: A recent psychological model proposed that rumination might be involved in grandiose delusions (GD) by amplifying positive mood triggered by the occurrence of a positive event or the recall of positive autobiographical memories. This is the first study whose aim is to explore the role of rumination in the development and maintenance of grandiose ideas in a nonclinical sample. METHODS: Following a grandiose ideas induction task, 109 nonclinical participants completed a rumination and distraction condition. Participants also completed a questionnaire designed to measure

Causal Evidence for Mnemonic Metacognition in Human Precuneus.

Metacognition is the capacity to introspectively monitor and control one's own cognitive processes. Previous anatomical and functional neuroimaging findings implicated the important role of the precuneus in metacognition processing, especially during mnemonic tasks. However, the issue of whether this medial parietal cortex is a domain-specific region that supports mnemonic metacognition remains controversial. Here, we focally disrupted this parietal area with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in healthy human participants of both sexes, seeking to ascertain its functional necessity

Psychological causes of autobiographical amnesia: A study of 28 cases.

Autobiographical amnesia is found in patients with focal or diffuse brain damage ("organic amnesia"), but also without overt brain damage (at least when measured with conventional brain imaging methods). This last condition is usually named dissociative amnesia at present, and was originally described as hysteria. Classically and traditionally, dissociative amnesia is seen as a disorder that causes retrograde amnesia in the autobiographical domain in the aftermath of incidents of major psychological stress or trauma. In the present study one of the probably largest published collections of pat

Autobiographical Memory and Imagining Future Personal Events: Event Specificity and Symptoms of Depression and Stress Following Exposure to an Analogue Trauma.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether reduced autobiographical memory and future event specificity were associated with elevated depressive and stress symptoms immediately and 1 week following exposure to a trauma film. A non-clinical sample comprising 101 participants completed all phases of the study, which included the following: baseline tests of autobiographical memory and future event specificity; a diary recording intrusions of the film over a 7-day period; and self-report questionnaires assessing depressive, posttraumatic stress and ruminative symptoms 7 days followin

Longitudinal changes in prospective memory in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Prospective Memory (PM) is defined as the memory for future intentions, and it is typically divided into time-based (TBPM) and event-based (EBPM). PM deficits are widely reported in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) but, until now, no study has yet examined their longitudinal course. Understanding how PM changes over time in PD is therefore crucial for identifying early cognitive decline and guiding timely interventions to preserve daily functioning. The present longitudinal study investigates the evolution of PM deficits over time in PD, exploring their relationship with cognitive, motor

Self-reported Prospective and Retrospective Memory Among Middle Aged and Older Autistic and Non-autistic People.

OBJECTIVE: Self-reported memory difficulties are common among older adults, but few studies have examined memory problems among autistic middle-aged and older people. The current study examines self-rated prospective (PM) and retrospective (RM) memory difficulties and their associations with age in middle-aged and older autistic and non-autistic people. METHODS: 350 autistic people (58% assigned-female-at-birth; age-range: 40-83 years) and 350 non-autistic adults matched on age, birth-sex and education level were included in the analysis. Participants completed the Prospective and Retrospecti

Neuropsychological correlates of prospective memory: A comparison between tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease and cervical dystonia.

Cervical Dystonia (CD) and Parkinson's disease, particularly tremor-dominant motor phenotype (TD-PD), showed a selective deficit of time-based prospective memory (TBPM). The two movement disorders are mainly characterized by dysfunctions of basal-ganglia and prefrontal cortex but it is reported that cerebellum also plays a key role in their pathogenesis. These cerebral structures are specifically involved in TBPM rather than in event-based PM (EBPM), but until now no study directly compared these two components of PM between CD and TD-PD patients. Therefore, the present study aimed at investig

Psychometric properties of the written version of the autobiographical memory test in a japanese community sample.

The autobiographical memory test (AMT) is a widely used measure to assess the specificity of autobiographical memories. Reduced Autobiographical Memory Specificity (AMS) or increased overgeneralization of memories is considered as a cognitive hallmark of depression. Therefore, reduced AMS is the subject of much psychopathological research, and is a promising target for psychological interventions. Although considerable evidence has been gathered on the clinical relevance of reduced AMS over the past decades, studies on AMS have been mainly conducted in Western populations, and few have been co

Development of the Brief Assessment of Prospective Memory (BAPM) for use with traumatic brain injury populations.

Impairment of prospective memory (PM) is a common problem following traumatic brain injury (TBI) which can affect functional outcomes. PM failures in everyday life can be assessed using self-report questionnaires; however, existing measures tend to be lengthy, which may be problematic for individuals with fatigue and other cognitive impairments. This study aimed to develop a short form of the Comprehensive Assessment of Prospective Memory (CAPM) and examine its psychometric properties. Using theoretical and statistical considerations, the number of items on the CAPM was reduced to 16 including

Prospective memory functions in traumatic brain injury: The role of neuropsychological deficits, metamemory and impaired self-awareness.

A large body of evidence suggests that individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have significant difficulties with prospective memory (PM), the memory for future intentions. However, the processes underlying this cognitive deficit remain unclear. This study aimed to gather further evidence regarding PM functions in TBI and clarify the role of neuropsychological deficits, metamemory, and mood disorders. We used a laboratory-based clinical measure, the Virtual Week, to examine PM function in 18 patients with TBI and 18 healthy control subjects. Measures of attention, processing speed, execu

Pick a PACC: Comparing domain-specific and general cognitive composites in Alzheimer disease research.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to illustrate how complex cognitive data can be used to create domain-specific and general cognitive composites relevant to Alzheimer disease research. METHOD: Using equipercentile equating, we combined data from the Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center that spanned multiple iterations of the Uniform Data Set. Exploratory factor analyses revealed four domain-specific composites representing episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, and attention/processing speed. The previously defined preclinical Alzheimer disease cognitive composite (PAC

Online pharmacy navigation skills are associated with prospective memory in HIV disease.

OBJECTIVE: The increased use of online pharmacy services in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic provides an important backdrop against which to examine the role of neurocognitive functions in health-related Internet navigation skills among persons with chronic medical conditions, such as HIV disease. Prospective memory (PM) is reliably impaired in HIV disease and is related to laboratory-based measures of medication management capacity in other populations. This study examined whether PM shows veridicality in relationship to online pharmacy navigation skills in persons with HIV disease. METHOD

Rumination and Impaired Prospective Memory.

Prospective memory (PM), remembering to remember, is crucial to everyday functioning. Understanding factors associated with PM impairments is thus important. One likely factor is rumination: a common cognitive process comprising repetitive self-focused thoughts. We investigated whether rumination is associated with impaired PM, and whether any associated impairment is exacerbated with negative stimuli. A sentence-rating task with sentences varying in valence was used with embedded PM cues in a non-clinical sample (N = 60). State rumination, two trait rumination subtypes (reflective pondering a
