People who live or work in moldy buildings often complain of "brain fog" that interferes with cognitive performance. Until recently, there was no published research on the effects of controlled exposure to mold stimuli on cognitive function or an obvious mechanism of action, fueling controversy over these claims. The constellation of health problems reported by mold-exposed individuals (respiratory issues, fatigue, pain, anxiety, depression, and cognitive deficits) correspond to those caused by innate immune activation following exposure to bacterial or viral stimuli. To determine if mold-indu

OBJECTIVE: The interhemispheric transcallosal approach to deep-seated lesions in and around the ventricular system avoids cortical manipulation and injury. Few case series discuss the morbidity associated with this approach. This study describes the 15-year experience of the senior author in Southern California.
METHODS: All pediatric patients who have undergone interhemispheric, transcallosal resections of mass lesions over a 15-year period were identified. The surgical approach was uniform with respect to positioning of the patient. Intra-operative and post-operative data were collected ret

INTRODUCTION: Impaired brain protein synthesis, synaptic plasticity, and memory are major hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The ketamine metabolite (2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) has been shown to modulate protein synthesis, but its effects on memory in AD models remain elusive.
METHODS: We investigated the effects of HNK on hippocampal protein synthesis, long-term potentiation (LTP), and memory in AD mouse models.
RESULTS: HNK activated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), and p70S6 kinase 1 (S6K1)/ribosomal protein S6 signaling

Modifiable risk factors associated with cognitive functioning are important for identifying potential targets for intervention development. Although there are a few recognized modifiable risk factors (e.g., diabetes mellitus, diet, physical activity), there are limitations in the conclusions that can be drawn due to limited data. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between modifiable liver disease-linked metabolic and behavioral factors in a sample of community dwelling adults who do not currently experience functional limitations due to cognitive abilities. Individuals aged 19 to

OBJECTIVES: The human body physiology rapidly changes and adapt to several environmental stimuli, including light. Abnormal artificial light exposures have been shown to affect sleep cycle, cognition, and mood. Although studies have reported inconsistent effects of short-term or constant long-term light exposures, human exposures to artificial lights occur at varying, unpredictable times and duration daily. Here, we studied the effects of long-term unpredictable light exposure on learning, memory, oxidative status, and associated cytokines in rats.
METHODS: Artificial lighting was provided us

BACKGROUND: During cardiosurgical procedures that use extracorporeal circulation (ECC), a variety of neurological complications can occur, and postoperative cognitive deficits remain an unsolved problem. Among the sources of these complications are intraoperatively detectable cerebral microemboli, which mainly consist of air. This study's purpose was to assess neuroprotective effects of reducing these gaseous microemboli using a dynamic bubble trap (DBT) in patients undergoing pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) for the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

Adult obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with cognitive dysfunction. While many review articles have attempted to summarize the evidence for this association, it remains difficult to determine which domains of cognition are affected by OSA. This is because of marked differences in the nature of these reviews (e.g. many are unsystematic) and the many different tasks and domains assessed. This paper addresses this issue by comparing the results of only systematic reviews or meta-analyses assessing the effects of OSA on cognition, the relationship between OSA severity and cognition, and

Background: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a significant concern for individuals with non-central nervous system (non-CNS) cancers, affecting memory, attention, executive functions, and processing speed. Non-pharmacological interventions, including digital cognitive rehabilitation, have shown promise in addressing CRCI. This systematic review investigates the efficacy of digital and computerized cognitive rehabilitation interventions in improving cognitive outcomes in non-CNS cancer patients. Method: A systematic search of the EMBASE, Scopus, and PubMed databases was conducted t

Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It has been shown that insulin signalling is desensitised in the brains of AD patients. The incretin hormone Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) facilitates insulin signalling, and long-lasting analogues such as liraglutide (Victoza(®)) are on the market as type 2 diabetes treatments. We have previously shown that liraglutide improved cognitive function, reduced amyloid plaque deposition, inflammation, overall APP and oligomer levels and enhanced LTP when injected peripherally for two months in 7 month old APPswe/PS1Δ

Hyperornithinemia is the biochemical hallmark of hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome, an inherited metabolic disease clinically characterized by mental retardation whose pathogenesis is still poorly known. In the present work, we produced a chemical animal model of hyperornithinemia induced by a subcutaneous injection of saline-buffered Orn (2-5 μmol/g body weight) to rats. High brain Orn concentrations were achieved, indicating that Orn is permeable to the blood brain barrier. We then investigated the effect of early chronic postnatal administration of Orn on phy

CONTEXT: Impaired cognition and altered quality of life (QoL) may persist despite long-term remission of Cushing's disease (CD). Persistent comorbidities and treatment modalities may account for cognitive impairments. Therefore, the role of hypercortisolism per se on cognitive sequelae remains debatable.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether memory and QoL are impaired after long-term remission of CD in patients with no confounding comorbidity.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional case-control study in two tertiary referral centers.
PATIENTS: 25 patients (44.5 ± 2.4 years) in remission from CD f

Multifunctional T cells have been shown to be protective in chronic viral infections. In mycobacterial infections, however, evidence for a protective role of multifunctional T cells remains inconclusive. Short-term cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis RD1 antigens 6-kDa early secretory antigenic target (ESAT6) and 10-kDa culture filtrate antigen (CFP10), which are induced in the early infection phase, have been mainly used to assess T cell multifunctionality, although long-term culture assays have been proposed to be more sensitive than

Long-term amnesia is a slowly developing form of anterograde amnesia accompanied by retrograde amnesia of variable severity (Kapur, 1996; 1997) often associated with damage to the anterior temporal neocortex and epileptic seizures. The precise neural and functional deficits that underlie this condition are unknown. A patient, JL, who has this condition following a closed-head injury, is described in detail. Her injury caused bilateral anterior temporal neocortex damage that was more extensive on the left and right-sided damage to the perirhinal and orbitofrontal cortices. The hippocampus appea

INTRODUCTION: Memory is retrieved and updated during reconsolidation, which provides a potential target for therapeutic intervention. Reconsolidation blockade following unconditioned stimulus (US) retrieval has shown increasing promise in disrupting persistent remote fear memory, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to elucidate the neural mechanisms involved in US retrieval-induced reconsolidation of remote fear memory.
METHODS: We established a rat model of contextual fear conditioning to investigate recent and remote fear memory with r

Long-term memory is achieved through a consolidation process where structural and molecular changes integrate information into a stable memory. However, environmental conditions constantly change, and organisms must adapt their behavior by updating their memories, providing dynamic flexibility for adaptive responses. Consequently, novel stimulation/experiences can be integrated during memory retrieval; where consolidated memories are updated by a dynamic process after the appearance of a prediction error or by the exposure to new information, generating edited memories. This review will discus

Transient epileptic amnesia is a form of temporal lobe epilepsy in which sufferers often complain of irretrievable loss of remote memories. We used a broad range of memory tests to clarify the extent and nature of the remote memory deficits in patients with transient epileptic amnesia. Performance on standard tests of anterograde memory was normal. In contrast, there was a severe impairment of memory for autobiographical events extending across the entire lifespan, providing evidence for the occurrence of 'focal retrograde amnesia' in transient epileptic amnesia. There was a milder impairment

Long-lived plasma cells (LLPCs) constitute a specialized and durable arm of humoral memory. While their role in maintaining long-term IgG and IgA immunity is firmly established, their contribution to IgE-mediated allergic disease remains clinically unproven. Nevertheless, recent advances in LLPC biology-accelerated substantially since 2021-have shown that IgE⁺ LLPC-like cells do exist in human bone marrow and chronically inflamed tissues, providing an immunological basis for exploring their potential involvement in persistent sensitization. LLPCs arise through tightly orchestrated developmenta

Resident memory T cells are non-recirculating memory T cells that persist long-term in epithelial barrier tissues, including the gastrointestinal tract, lung, skin, and reproductive tract. Resident memory T cells persist in the absence of antigens, have impressive effector functions, and provide rapid on-site immune protection against known pathogens in peripheral tissues. A fundamentally distinct gene expression program differentiates resident memory T cells from circulating T cells. Although these cells likely evolved to provide rapid immune protection against pathogens, autoreactive, aberra
