BACKGROUND: Adenomyosis is a benign disease with elevated CA125 level.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report 3 cases with adenomyosis who developed ischemic stroke during menstruation. The levels of CA125, CA19-9, and D-dimer were elevated, which dropped markedly after the menstrual phase. The development of nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) and stenosis of the cerebral arteries associated with hypercoagulable state and the hyperviscosity nature of the mucinous protein may be the underlying mechanisms.

We present a case of recurrent haemo-pneumothorax in a young female patient with previously undiagnosed Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). The patient presented with a spontaneous haemo-pneumothorax not associated with menstruation. Following further subsequent episodes, left lower lobectomy was performed. BACKGROUND: Congenital vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is a very uncommon condition rarely suspected at initial presentation. It is usually seen in association with complex malformations of the genitourinary tract.

The most familiar etiology of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is that of menstruation and tampon use. Nonmenstrual TSS has been described in all types of wounds including postsurgical, respiratory infection, mucous membrane disruption, burns, and vesicular lesions caused by varicella and shingles. A case of TSS occurring in a diabetic male patient with foot blisters is presented. Early recognition by an infectious disease specialist and appropriate medical management led to complete recovery. There have been no reported cases of Staphylococcus aureus TSS originating in the foot to date.

Fibrinogen levels were determined in 100 women on oral contraceptive pills (OCP), aged 17-46 years, and 100 apparently healthy women with regular menstruation and no previous history of hormonal therapy, aged 20-40 years, who served as controls. Hematometrocolpos is a rare congenital abnormality of the female urogenital system that leads to an imperforate hymen and subsequent retrograde menstruation. We present the case of a 14-year-old female patient who presented to the emergency department with amenorrhea and abdominal pain, and was found to have an imperforate hymen and hematometrocolpos on trans-abdominal point-of-care ultrasound. It is important for emergency physicians to consider this diagnosis in pubescent female patients presenting with abdominal pain, as missed diagnosis can lead to infertility and other complications.

A case of staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in a 15-year-old patient undergoing reconstructive burn surgery is reported. This syndrome, first described in menstruating women using tampons, can also occur as a postsurgical complication. The epidemiology, microbiology, clinical presentation and management of non-menstrual TSS are discussed and correlated with the patient present. We advise caution in the use of occlusive dressings and recommend constant isolation of patients with open wounds colonized with a TSST-1 producing strain of Staph. aureus.

A case of a 30-year-old woman who developed fever, diarrhoea and vomiting during the third and fourth days of menstruation, during which she was using tampons, is presented. The patient was admitted to hospital on the fifth day in shock , semicomatose, and with a generalized erythroderma. A presumptive diagnosis of toxic shock syndrome was made. Aggressive resuscitative and antibiotic therapy achieved a favourable outcome. An unused tampon from the same packet grew a Staphylococcus aureus of the same antibiogram and phage type as that isolated from the vaginal culture.

This is an analysis of changes in menstrual cycle length and regularity occurring for a group of 211 women who had discontinued use of oral contraceptives. The analysis is based on prospectively recorded histories from the Menstruation and Reproduction History Program. Post-pill menstrual cycle length and regularity are compared with pre-pill averages. In the first post-pill cycle, there was an average increase of 6 days in cycle length. In subsequent cycles, however, cycle length and regularity were comparable to pre-pill norms in most cases.

A 15-year-old girl was referred to the Endocrine Unit because of a deep voice and the absence of menstruation. Secondary sex hair showed a male pattern of distribution and there was a phallic clitoris 4 cm long, with the urethral orifice posterior. Plasma testosterone was within the normal male range. The karyotype was 46XY. Gonadectomy and clitoridectomy were performed. Histology suggested a diagnosis of anatomical testicular failure, which, in view of the imperfect attempt at masculinization, was thought to be only partial. Possible causes are discussed.
