Stabilization of Atomic CoOx Clusters on Oxygen Vacancy-Rich TiO2 for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 to Methanol.

This study utilizes cold plasma etching to create oxygen vacancies on TiO2 nanosheets, which serve as anchoring sites to achieve atomic dispersion of CoOx clusters. The synthesized catalyst exhibits exceptional performance in photocatalytic CO2 to methanol, yielding 542.3 μmol·g-1·h-1 approximately three times higher than that of the nonplasma-treated samples. Comprehensive characterizations confirm the atomic dispersion of cobalt and strong metal-support interactions, which enhance charge separation/transfer kinetics. In situ DRIFTS analysis further elucidates the CO2 to methanol reaction pat…

Tailoring hierarchical ZSM-5 with water-soluble polymers templates for BTX production in methanol-to-aromatics.

Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized by one-pot methods utilizing water-soluble polymers-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-and were compared with a desilicated (DS/ZC) typical microporous ZSM-5 (ZC). Thorough evaluation utilizing XRD, FT-IR, NH3 physisorption, SEM and TEM, ICP-OES, NH3-TPD, and TGA demonstrated that PVP-templated ZSM-5 (PVP/ZC) displayed distinct mesoporosity while maintaining its inherent microporous structure, resulting in a balanced allocation of weak and strong acid sites. All catalysts were assessed in the methanol-to-aromatics (MTA) reactio…

Pressure-Induced Selectivity Change of Pt/In2O3 for CO2 Hydrogenation: From Methanol Synthesis to CO Formation.

In2O3 is a unique oxide exhibiting pressure-dependent selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation, favoring CO formation at atmospheric pressure and methanol at elevated pressures. Metal promoters, particularly platinum, have been used to enhance In2O3 activity toward methanol synthesis, but their behavior under atmospheric conditions remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the pressure-dependent reactivity of platinum-promoted In2O3 (Pt/In2O3). Pt/In2O3 is highly active for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction at 0.1 MPa, while achieving excellent methanol selectivity at elevated pressure…

Palladium single atoms: engineering asymmetric active sites for selective photothermal reduction of carbon dioxide to methanol.

Photothermal (PT) synergistic catalysis for the conversion of CO2 to methanol (MeOH) represents a promising strategy for CO2 utilization. However, the development of Cu-ZnO catalysts exhibiting high thermal stability and photocatalytic activity remains a critical challenge for efficient CO2 conversion via the PT catalysis. To address these issues, Pd single atoms are successfully anchored onto the Cu-ZnO surface of the Z-scheme heterostructure (designated as Pd1/Cu-ZnO), resulting in three distinct asymmetric coordination environments: Pd-O-Cu, Pd-Cu, and Pd-O-Zn. The non-uniform charge distri…

Improvement of Catalyst Layers in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells Using Dual-Electrode Carbon Nanotube Carrier Structure.

The sole use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as single-electrode carriers in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) creates structural disparities that increase resistance, impair catalyst utilization, and limit discharge duration. This study presents a novel dual-electrode CNT-based carrier structure designed to enhance mass transport and electron conduction, thereby improving DMFC power output and durability. The CNTs were grown in situ via nitrogen sintering onto the microporous layer, with parameters optimized to enhance surface morphology and conductivity. The impact of this dual-electrode CNT car…

Spatially coupled CO2 activation and hydrogenation sites in 1 T'-MoS2 enable near-unity methanol selectivity.

The development of efficient catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is highly urgent but is hindered by maintaining precise control over intermediate transfer. Here we demonstrate that the oxidized 2D 1 T'-MoS2 uniquely integrates both CO2 activation and selective hydrogenation functions within a single material through its inherent 2D structural merit. The singular S-edge structure of 1 T'-MoS2 creates a uniform catalytic landscape where in-plane O-substituted sulfur defects and oxidized edges operate in concert. This spatially organized system achieves CO2 conversion of 23.0% with a met…

Rapid on-site methanol screening in distilled spirits via BME688 MOX sensor array and machine learning.

Methanol contamination in distilled beverages remains a serious public health risk, particularly in the context of illicit or poorly controlled production. Although confirmatory determination of methanol is routinely performed using laboratory-based techniques such as gas chromatography, spectrophotometry, and enzymatic assays, these approaches are often impractical for rapid screening due to infrastructure, expertise, time, and cost constraints. This study proposes a portable, fast and low-cost screening framework that integrates the Bosch BME688 metal-oxide (MOX) sensor array with machine-le…

Spatial construction of rhodium nanocrystals anchored on TiO2-decorated MXene architectures for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic methanol oxidation.

The sluggish kinetics of the methanol oxidation reaction largely hinders the practical application of direct methanol fuel cells, which imposes stringent requirements on anodic catalysts. Herein, we report a rational heterointerface engineering strategy for the spatial construction of a photo-cascade electrocatalyst by in situ anchoring rhodium nanocrystals onto TiO2-decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene (Rh/TiO2-MX) architectures through a combined oxidative etching and solvothermal assembly process. The existence of TiO2 interlayers not only prevents MXene restacking and provides abundant anchoring sites …

Beyond Treatment: Electrochemical Phenol Oxidation in Methanol under Different Cell Configurations and Its Implications for Valorization.

This study explores electrochemical phenol oxidation in methanolic and aqueous media as a strategy to shift adsorption-based treatments from pollutant removal toward chemical valorization. Using 3D-printed single- and divided-cell reactors with alkaline electrolytes to enhance conductivity, methanol clearly outperformed water: phenol conversions exceeded 50% after 3 h (vs <15% in water), with higher Faradaic efficiencies (>21%) and energy efficiencies up to 3-fold greater, especially in anion exchange membrane (AEM) systems. Speciation analysis revealed that methanol favors diverse, industrial…

RegB/A-dependent redox regulation links iron uptake to methanol metabolism in Methylomonas sp. DH-1.

UNLABELLED: Methanotrophs primarily use methane as a carbon and energy source, but they can also grow on methanol. However, methanol assimilation in the absence of methane oxidation results in a redox imbalance due to the accumulation of NADH. In Methylomonas sp. DH-1, a type I methanotroph, we show that this methanol-induced redox stress activates the RegB/RegA two-component system, a global redox sensor. Methanol triggers the RegB-to-RegA phosphotransfer cascade, resulting in RegA-dependent expression of the feo operon and increased ferrous iron uptake. This iron acquisition is essential for…

Selective Oxidation of Methane to Methanol over Rh/Hydroxyapatite Catalysts Enabled by Strong Metal-Support Interactions.

Methane, the primary constituent of natural gas, represents a critical feedstock for the synthesis of high-value liquid fuels and chemicals. However, its practical conversion is often hampered by the high dissociation energy and low polarity of the C-H bond, as well as the susceptibility of methanol to overoxidation. In this study, we propose an effective strategy for methane oxidation utilizing atomically dispersed rhodium supported on hydroxyapatite (Rh/HAp), synthesized via a straightforward impregnation method. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the 0.5Rh/HAp catalyst achieves a met…

A machine learning perspective on three decades of methanol synthesis: research framework and experimental operation insights.

Heterogeneous catalysis optimization relies on the coordinated selection of catalyst composition, synthesis procedure, and reaction conditions, yet the empirical links between these variables and catalytic performance remain scattered across individual studies. Here, we show that an interpretable machine learning (ML) framework can decode this complexity by integrating disparate literature data. We curate, to our knowledge, the first unified dataset from 200 papers spanning three decades of CO2-to-methanol synthesis over Cu/ZnO-based catalysts, and derive a subset of apparent activation energy…

CO2 availability as process tool to enhance isobutyric acid production in methanol fermentation by Clostridium luticellarii.

The bioconversion of CO2‑derived methanol into higher‑value chemicals offers an attractive route for hybrid catalytic-biotechnological carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Clostridium luticellarii is one of the few acetogens able to produce isobutyric acid. However, operational and metabolic factors driving its production are poorly understood. This work investigates how CO2 availability shapes the product spectrum of C. luticellarii during methylotrophic growth and assesses whether CO2 supply can be used as a process lever to promote isobutyric acid formation. Batch experiments with varying …

Incorporation of Engineered Cu0/Cu+ Interfaces in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

The Cu-based materials are an important category of catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, in which Cu0 and Cu+ species have been widely acknowledged to play key roles in the reaction. Herein, a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely UiO-66(n) with exposed ─COOH groups, are fabricated by employing both terephthalic acid and 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid linkers. Following by introducing Cu nanoparticles, Cu@UiO-66(n) are synthesized. By regulating the amount of exposed ─COOH groups on the MOF pore wall, the interaction between Cu and the MOF support is regulated. This ─COOH …

PdNi/N-C dodecahedra with surface-enriched Pd for efficient methanol electro-oxidation in alkaline media.

The methanol electrooxidation reaction (MOR) is a key anodic process in direct methanol fuel cells, yet its practical application remains hindered by several critical challenges, including the high cost and limited reserves of noble metal catalysts, severe CO poisoning of active sites, and insufficient long-term durability. Herein we report a PdNi/N-C catalyst derived from ZIF-8 dodecahedra, featuring Pd-enriched surfaces on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. The unique architecture ensures high Pd utilization while the PdNi alloying effect, combined with the presence of excess Ni nanoparticles,…

Exploring flat multi-minima potential energy surface by matrix isolation IR spectroscopy: Revisiting methanol-H2S complex.

An extensive potential energy surface search of the methanol-H2S binary complex reveals four distinct conformers (two each of S-H⋯O and O-H⋯S H-bonded) within a small energy window (binding energies within -2.9 to -3.3 kcal mol-1). The four conformers are interconvertible via rotation along the C-O bond of methanol and the S-H bond of H2S, with very small rotational barriers (<0.5 kcal mol-1). All four stable methanol-H2S complexes have been experimentally identified for the first time in cold and solid argon and nitrogen matrices via spectral signatures in νO-H and νS-H regions, while an earl…

Molybdenum-induced interfacial electron pump stabilizes γ-NiOOH for efficient electrooxidation conversion of methanol into formate.

The intrinsic instability of the active γ-NiOOH phase severely limits the performance of nickel-based electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Herein, we report a Mo-induced interfacial electron pump strategy to stabilize the γ-NiOOH lattice and boost MOR efficiency. Via a distinctive two-step strategy of electrolysis and subsequent solvothermal reaction, we construct NiMo/graphene (NiMo/G) composites rich in Ni-O-Mo interfaces, where Mo centers continuously withdraw electrons from adjacent Ni sites, functioning as efficient electron sinks. This precise electronic modulation…
