PCR Testing of IVC Filter Tops as a Method for Detecting Murine Pinworms and Fur Mites.

We evaluated PCR testing of filter tops from cages maintained on an IVC system through which exhaust air is filtered at the cage level as a method for detecting parasite-infected and -infested cages. Cages containing 4 naïve Swiss Webster mice received 360 mL of uncontaminated aspen chip or α-cellulose bedding (n = 18 cages each) and 60 mL of the same type of bedding weekly from each of the following 4 groups of cages housing mice infected or infested with Syphacia obvelata (SO), Aspiculuris tetraptera (AT), Myocoptes musculinus (MC), or Myobia musculi (MB) and Radfordia affinis (RA; 240 mL be

A synthetic review of notoedres species mites and mange.

Notoedric mange, caused by obligately parasitic sarcoptiform Notoedres mites, is associated with potentially fatal dermatitis with secondary systemic disease in small mammals, felids and procyonids among others, as well as an occasional zoonosis. We describe clinical spectra in non-chiropteran hosts, review risk factors and summarize ecological and epidemiological studies. The genus is disproportionately represented on rodents. Disease in felids and procyonids ranges from very mild to death. Knowledge of the geographical distribution of the mites is highly inadequate, with focal hot spots know

Molecular epidemiological characterization of poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, in Japan.

Dermanyssus gallinae, the poultry red mite, is an obligatory blood-sucking ectoparasite. The genetic diversity of D. gallinae has been examined in some countries, but so far not in Asian countries. Here, we sequenced a part of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and16S rRNA genes and nuclear internal transcribed spacers (ITS) region in 239 mite samples collected from 40 prefectures throughout Japan. The COI and 16S rRNA nucleotide sequences were classified into 28 and 26 haplotypes, respectively. In phylogenetic trees, the haplotypes clustered into 2 haplogroups corresponding

Ivermectin treatment of bovine psoroptic mange: effects on serum chemistry, hematology, organ weights, and leather quality.

Psoroptic mange is a skin disease which may result in serious health and welfare problems and important economic losses. Apart from the effect on weight gain, little information is available concerning other responses of the organism consequent to the successful therapy of bovine psoroptic mange. Accordingly, serum chemistry, hematology, organ weights, and leather quality of young bulls with experimentally induced clinical Psoroptes ovis mange and treated with either ivermectin long-acting injection (IVM LAI; IVOMEC(®) GOLD, Merial) or saline (n = 16 each) were examined 8 weeks after treatment

Combined evaluation of commonly used techniques, including PCR, for diagnosis of mouse fur mites.

Our study evaluated and compared the false-negative rates (FNR) of a wide array of fur-mite diagnostic tests, including 2 postmortem tests (pelt exam and sticky paper) and 3 antemortem tests (adhesive tape, fur pluck, and PCR). Past publications examining fur-mite diagnostic techniques primarily used paired comparisons, evaluating tests by their level of agreement with only one other test. However, different combinations or pairs of diagnostics are used in the different studies, making the results of these comparisons difficult to interpret across all available diagnostics. In the current stud

Haematological and immunological response of unrestrained cattle to Psoroptes ovis, the sheep scab mite.

Cows were infected twice with 600 and 500 nymphs and adults of a bovine strain of Psoroptes ovis with a nine-week interval. The haematological response and the non-specific mitogen- and antigen-induced responsiveness of the peripheral blood lymphocytes of the animals was followed. Dermal reactivity to P ovis antigen injection was studied five weeks after reinfection. After the first infection with 600 mites none of the infected animals developed clinical psoroptic mange but a leucocytosis developed, contributed to primarily by an eosinophilia and by a slight lymphocytosis. Antigen-induced lymp

Demodex flagellurus sp. n. (Acari: Demodicidae) from the preputial and clitoral glands of the house mouse, Mus musculus L.

An extremely large new demodicid, Demodex flagellurus sp. n., is described in all stages of its life cycle from the house mouse, Mus musculus L. Its habitat, the preputial and clitoral glands, is reported as new for demodicid mites. Adaptations to habitat, host transfer, and the potential of this species as a useful model in experimental studies on demodicid biology are discussed.

Elevated levels of IgE antibodies to ascaris and mite antigens in Papua New Guinea.

Levels of IgE as well as specific IgE antibodies to ascaris and mite have been studied in two groups in Papua New Guinea (PNG), patients with primary liver carcinoma (PLC) and normal blood donors, and in two groups in Japan, normal subjects and asthmatic patients. A radioallergosorbent test was used to measure IgE antibodies to ascaris and mite antigens. Much higher levels of IgE were found in the Papua New Guinean subjects than the normal Japanese subjects. Also levels of IgE antibodies to ascaris were much higher in Papua New Guineans than in the Japanese subjects. Though similar results wer

Parasitic Mites of Honey Bees (Apis Spp.): A Detailed Review of Varroa destructor in Parasitism, Pathogen Transmission and its Management.

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is the primary factor contributing to global honeybee (Apis mellifera) colony losses, posing a sustainable challenge to apiculture and pollination services. Its intricate life cycle adaptive reproductive strategies, and advanced sensory mechanisms have facilitated its emergence as the most destructive honeybee parasite. V. destructor uses highly specialized feeding strategies that extract essential nutrients from their hosts and introduce various pathogens, causing honeybee health problems. The mite functions as a viral vector, particularly in the case of t

Structure of a pH-sensitive pentameric ligand-gated ion channel from the Sarcoptes scabies mite.

Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei and represents a substantial global health burden exacerbated by emerging resistance to ivermectin. An anionic pentameric ligand-gated ion channel from the mite, SsCl, shows pH-sensitivity and is significantly modulated by ivermectin. Here, we use cryo-EM and electrophysiology to explore the pH-sensing mechanisms of SsCl and the impact of ivermectin on channel activity. Structures of SsCl were resolved in closed (pH 6.5) and desensitized (pH 9) states, alongside ivermectin-bound conformations. The desensitized structure adopts

Morphological and molecular identification of Sarcoptes scabiei in a South American coati (Nasua nasua) from Peru.

Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus) (Sarcoptiformes: Sarcoptidae), the cause of sarcoptic mange, has been documented as a pathogen affecting domestic and wild mammals, including coatis (Nasua spp. Storr (Carnivora: Procyonidae)). This parasitism impacts the health of infested animals and, in some cases, modifies the population dynamics of the affected species. The present study reports the first case of sarcoptic mange in a South American coati (Nasua nasua (Linnaeus)) from Peru. The Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre (SERFOR) rescued a coati from illegal trafficking in June 2024. The an

Demodicosis in Different Age Groups and Alternative Treatment Options-A Review.

Infestation with Demodex mites is a common occurrence, especially in adults and the elderly. More recent attention has been paid to the presence of Demodex spp. mites in children, even ones without comorbidities. It causes both dermatological and ophthalmological problems. The presence of Demodex spp. is often asymptomatic, thus it is suggested to include parasitological investigation tests in dermatological diagnostics, in addition to bacteriological analysis. Literature reports show that Demodex spp. are related to the pathogenesis of numerous dermatoses, including rosacea or demodicosis gra

First report of straelensiosis in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes).

BACKGROUND: Straelensia cynotis, a trombidioid larval mite, was identified as a cause of nodular dermatitis in dogs in Southern Europe. It has been suggested that red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a natural host for S. cynotis. However, no case has been reported in this species. OBJECTIVE: To describe three suspected cases of straelensiosis in red foxes. ANIMALS: Three juvenile wild red foxes from Portugal. RESULTS: Erythematous papules and nodules were found in the head, neck and limbs of these foxes with no associated pruritus. In skin biopsies, well-preserved larval mites were found within dila

Demodex sp. as a Potential Cause of the Abandonment of Soft Contact Lenses by Their Existing Users.

Demodex mites may be a potential etiological factor in the development of various eye and skin disorders. The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of Demodex in the hair follicles of eyelashes and their potential influence on abandoning soft contact lenses which had been previously well tolerated by their users. A group of 62 users of contact lenses (28 with emerging discomfort and 34 without discomfort) were examined. There is a need to check the existence of a relationship between D. folliculorum or/and D. brevis infestation and the emergence of intolerance to the presence of sof

'Wake sign': an important clue for the diagnosis of scabies.

Japan is currently experiencing many outbreaks of scabies, occurring mainly in long-term care facilities. Scabies burrows, the only pathognomonic lesion for scabies, often occur on the creases of the palms, and are followed by a pattern of scale reminiscent of the 'wake' left on the surface of water by a moving bird or a ship (wake sign).(1-4) The wake sign is useful because (i) it is specific for scabies, (ii) it is sufficiently large to be found by the naked eye and (iii) it points towards the location of the mite and its products. Examination of patients' palms to look for this sign is a si
