Evaluation of five serological tests for the diagnosis of porcine brucellosis in French Polynesia.

Porcine brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 1 raises important issues for pig breeders in French Polynesia. In this region, the disease is enzootic, spreads silently and engenders economic losses in infected farms as well as sporadic human cases. While serological tests are essential in surveillance and control programmes of animal diseases, to date none of the available tests have been shown to be reliable enough to be used as a gold standard in routine individual diagnosis of porcine brucellosis. Few studies about the estimation of the sensitivity and the specificity of porcine brucellos

Assessing the infection risk of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in public drinking water delivered by surface water systems in Sao Paulo State, Brazil.

A survey of Giardia and Cryptosporidium was conducted in surface water used as drinking water sources by public water systems in four densely urbanized regions of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. A Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment, based on protozoa concentrations, was performed to estimate the probability of protozoa infection associated with drinking water ingestion. A total of 206 source water samples were analyzed over a 24 month period using the USEPA Method 1623. The risk of infection was estimated using an exponential dose response model, children and adults exposure and a gamma distribut

Are spontaneous fractures possible? An example of clinical application for personalised, multiscale neuro-musculo-skeletal modelling.

Elderly frequently present variable degrees of osteopenia, sarcopenia, and neuromotor control degradation. Severely osteoporotic patients sometime fracture their femoral neck when falling. Is it possible that such fractures might occur without any fall, but rather spontaneously while the patient is performing normal movements such as level walking? The aim of this study was to verify if such spontaneous fractures are biomechanically possible, and in such case, which conditions of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and neuromotor degradation could produce them. To the purpose, a probabilistic multiscale

Estimating drug effects in the presence of placebo response: causal inference using growth mixture modeling.

Placebo-controlled randomized trials for antidepressants and other drugs often show a response for a sizeable percentage of the subjects in the placebo group. Potential placebo responders can be assumed to exist also in the drug treatment group, making it difficult to assess the drug effect. A key drug research focus should be to estimate the percentage of individuals among those who responded to the drug who would not have responded to the placebo ('Drug Only Responders'). This paper investigates a finite mixture model approach to uncover percentages of up to four potential mixture components

Photon doses at the entrance of 60Co and low-energy medical accelerator rooms under unusual irradiation conditions.

In this paper, the general-purpose Monte Carlo code MCNP5 was used to study the dose variance due to the position of medical linear accelerators, under unusual conditions, for shielding design of radiotherapy facilities. It was found that the computational methods generally used to estimate the scattered photon doses at the entrance of radiotherapy unit vaults provide conservative results when compared with the MCNP results, considering the standard condition. On the other hand, for the situations where the axis of gantry rotation is redirected at, for example, 45 degrees with respect to the w

Clustering of parasites within cages on Scottish and Norwegian salmon farms: alternative sampling strategies illustrated using simulation.

Within the literature, most discussion of sampling protocols for monitoring aquatic parasites is based on the assumptions of simple random sampling. Recent research has shown that in monitoring parasite abundance on fish farms composed of discrete cages, care must be taken to properly account for the clustering which naturally occurs. This paper illustrates the effect of clustering in the context of monitoring ectoparasitic sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus in salmon farms. The degree of clustering of sea lice infections in fish within cages is measured using the intraclas

The contribution of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modelling with Monte Carlo simulation to the development of susceptibility breakpoints for Neisseria meningitidis.

This study used pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) modelling and MICs of 15 antimicrobial agents, derived from testing a large international culture collection, to assist in the development of interpretative criteria, i.e., breakpoints, for Neisseria meningitidis. PK parameters, protein binding, percentage penetration into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the variability of these values, were extracted from the published literature for the 15 agents. PK-PD parameters have not been developed specifically for N. meningitidis in animal or human studies. Thus, it was necessary to invoke PK-PD t

A stochastic model simulating paratuberculosis in a dairy herd.

Paratuberculosis (PTB) causes severe economic losses to farmers and the infection has very complex effects (many indirect) on the production of a dairy herd. These indirect effects have not or only briefly been described by earlier PTB-simulation models, and therefore they were included in a new model called PTB-Simherd. Our aim was to develop the basis for a decision-support tool which can predict herd-specific production-related effects from introduction of different control strategies against PTB. The PTB-Simherd is a dynamic, stochastic, and mechanistic Monte-Carlo model simulating a dairy

A Monte Carlo/Markov chain model for the association of data for chromosome aberrations and formation of micronuclei.

The micronucleus assay is a convenient, in situ method for observing cell damage resulting from exposure to clastogenic agents and has been widely used as a dosimeter of human exposure to radiation or chemicals. It also is a complement to the classic clonogenic cell survival assay in that it can be used to examine radiation damage vs dose as a function of cell type or radiation quality. Digitized imaging densitometry was conducted on CHO cells that have undergone one division and in which further cytokinesis was blocked to collect data on the distributions of percentage total cellular DNA per

Cost/benefit analysis and capital investment decisions in nuclear cardiology.

This paper demonstrates an application of Cost-Benefit Analysis as an aid in capital investment medical decision making. Specifically, a cost-benefit analysis is used to compare three nuclear cardiology instruments (i.e. Nuclear Stethoscope, Mobile Camera/Computer and Fixed Cardiac Computer). The study examined both non-quantitative and quantitative comparative factors. Results of the study show: (1) Conversion of the non-quantitative factors into a numerical system (via medical opinion) greatly delineates the relative merits of each instrument. (2) Simulating the stochastic economic and equip

A unified analytical framework for Mössbauer synchrotron sources.

Next-generation Mössbauer spectroscopy at synchrotron and X-ray free-electron laser facilities demands rapid, accurate and polarization-aware modeling of nuclear hyperfine interactions. We present a unified analytical framework that provides exact, rotationally invariant expressions for resonance energies and transition probabilities in the presence of simultaneous magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole interactions. Unlike conventional approaches, our method avoids Hamiltonian diagonalization by expressing intensities entirely in terms of hyperfine invariants, enabling efficient global fitti

Genetic analysis of complex traits via Bayesian variable selection: the utility of a mixture of uniform priors.

A new estimation-based Bayesian variable selection approach is presented for genetic analysis of complex traits based on linear or logistic regression. By assigning a mixture of uniform priors (MU) to genetic effects, the approach provides an intuitive way of specifying hyperparameters controlling the selection of multiple influential loci. It aims at avoiding the difficulty of interpreting assumptions made in the specifications of priors. The method is compared in two real datasets with two other approaches, stochastic search variable selection (SSVS) and a re-formulation of Bayes B utilizing

Relations between tooth enamel dose and organ doses for electron spin resonance dosimetry against external photon exposure.

An analysis of doses to tooth enamel and to organs was carried out to develop a method that can predict the organ doses and the effective dose by electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry using tooth samples for external photon exposure. Absorbed dose to tooth enamel and organ doses were obtained by Monte Carlo calculations using the EGS4 code in combination with a mathematical human model with a newly defined teeth part. The calculations gave quantitative relations between tooth enamel dose and organ doses for some cases of external photon exposure. It was also found that tooth enamel dose depe

An ultra-fast method for generating synthetic down-scattered neutron data for inertial confinement fusion implosions.

In inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility, asymmetries are probed by a variety of neutron diagnostics, including neutron imaging systems, real-time neutron activation diagnostics (RTNADs), and neutron spectrometers. It is often useful to generate synthetic data based on these diagnostics to validate and tune models. However, current methods of doing so using Monte Carlo particle tracing are time-consuming. In this paper, an ultra-fast method is presented for generating synthetic neutron images, RTNAD data, and spectrometry data using line integrals and 3D con

Efficient Inference for Coupled Hidden Markov Models in Continuous Time and Discrete Space.

Systems of interacting continuous-time Markov chains are a powerful model class, but inference is typically intractable in high-dimensional settings. Auxiliary information, such as noisy observations, is typically only available at discrete times, and incorporating it via a Doob's h -transform gives rise to an intractable posterior process that requires approximation. We introduce Latent Interacting Particle Systems, a model class parameterizing the generator of each Markov chain in the system. Our inference method involves estimating look-ahead functions (twist potentials) that anticipate fut

A Nature-Inspired Hybrid Heuristic for Orchestrating the Self-Deployment of Mobile Supply Robots in Communication-Contested Environments.

We present a nature-inspired approach for self-organizing logistics in contested environments characterized by uncertainty. The presented approach leverages territorial partitioning principles observed in natural collectives and systems. The logistics challenge addressed involves autonomously deploying a fleet of uncrewed mobile robots tasked with dynamically adjusting their positions to optimally service spatially and temporally fluctuating demands. Unlike traditional logistics, our approach is largely decentralized, relying almost exclusively on local interactions and decision-making. Monte

Critical behavior analysis of pure dipolar triangular lattice via equilibrium and nonequilibrium Monte Carlo simulations.

Magnetic thin films and two-dimensional (2D) arrays of magnetic nanoparticles exhibit unique physical properties that make them valuable for a wide range of technological applications. In such systems, dipolar interactions play a crucial role in determining their physical behavior. However, due to the anisotropic and long-range nature of dipolar interactions, conventional Monte Carlo (MC) methods face challenges in investigating these systems near criticality. In this study, we examine the critical behavior of a triangular lattice of XY dipoles using the optimized Tomita MC algorithm tailored

High accuracy ranging for space debris with spaceborne single photon Lidar.

The increasing risk posed by space debris highlights the need for accurate localization techniques. Spaceborne single photon Lidar (SSPL) offers a promising solution, overcoming the limitations of traditional ground-based systems by providing expansive coverage and superior maneuverability without being hindered by weather, time, or geographic constraints. This study introduces a novel approach leveraging non-parametric Bayesian inference and the Dirichlet process mixture model (DPMM) to accurately determine the distance of space debris in low Earth orbit (LEO), where debris exhibits nonlinear
