OBJECTIVE: Burnout is a pervasive occupational hazard in medicine, beginning early in training and linked to depression, suicide, medical errors, and attrition. While extensively studied in high-income countries, little is known from Latin America. Guatemala faces scarce mental health resources, social inequities, and limited residency regulation. This study aimed to characterize burnout, psychological distress, and moral injury among Guatemalan physicians in postgraduate medical training ("residents").
METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of residents in Guatemala (September-October

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units house critically acute patients requiring extensive treatments and specialised care. Highly trained healthcare providers work tirelessly to perform life-sustaining measures, but when all possible treatment options have been exhausted, it sometimes becomes necessary to withdraw treatment. This process places critical care nurses and the interprofessional teams at the centre of emotionally and ethically challenging end-of-life care.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to synthesise what is known about the types of moral, emotional, and psychological dis

Introduction: Healthcare professionals (HCPs) appear to be at increased risk for negative psychological outcomes [e.g. depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), moral distress] and associated impacts on functioning throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. HCPs working on designated COVID-19 units may be further impacted than their colleagues not on these units given added demands of patient care and risk of contracting COVID-19. Little is known, however, about the mental health and functioning of specific professional groups beyond nurses and physicians, including respiratory therap

BACKGROUND: As Next Generation Sequencing technologies are increasingly implemented in biomedical research and (translational) care, the number of study participants and patients who ask for release of their genomic raw data is set to increase. This raises the question whether research participants and patients have a legal and moral right to receive their genomic raw data and, if so, how this right should be implemented into practice.
METHODS: In a first step we clarify some central concepts such as "raw data"; in a second step we sketch the international legal framework. The third step prov

BACKGROUND: Some conduct-disordered youths have high levels of callous unemotional traits and meet the DSM-5's "with limited prosocial emotions" (LPE) specifier. These youths often do aggressive, self-benefitting acts that cost others. We previously developed a task, the AlAn's game, which asks participants to repeatedly decide whether to accept or reject offers in which they will receive money but a planned charity donation will be reduced. In our prior work, more "costly helping" (i.e., rejecting the offered money and protecting the donation) was associated with lower callous unemotional tra

OBJECTIVE: This study was to estimate the prevalence of elderly mistreatment (EM) in rural community and to examine the association between social support and the risk of the EM.
METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed in three rural communities (17 villages) in Macheng city of Hubei province. 2000 subjects aged 60 years or older were selected using cluster sampling. Questionnaire being developed would include general information, a scale to measure social support, and a modified vulnerability on abuse screening scale (VASS) to measure the EM.

The sharing of information and feedback directly from service-providing staff to healthcare organisational management is vital for organisat … the barriers preventing them from speaking up and effecting change, and the impact of this on staff morale and services. The sixth global cholera pandemic lasted from 1899 to 1923. However, despite widespread fear of the disease and of its negative effects on troop morale, very few soldiers in the British Expeditionary Forces contracted cholera between 1914 and 1918. Here, we have revived and sequenced the genome of NCTC 30, a 102-year-old Vibrio cholerae isolate, which we believe is the oldest publicly available live V. cholerae strain in existence. NCTC 30 was isolated in 1916 from a British soldier convalescent in Egypt. We found that this strain does not encode cholera toxin, thought to be necessary to cause…

The increasing complexity of healthcare provision and medical interventions requires collaboration between large numbers of health professio … here are also considerable benefits to staff and health organizations in terms of outcome and staff morale. This review paper examines the evidence for the benefit of such team-working and for the recommendations of team-working in rehabilitation services.

Little is known about the factors responsible for the institutionalization of the elderly. This study's objective was to discover markers associated with nursing home placement. Fifty-six white ambulatory women over 63 yrs of age were selected from 3 settings encompassing a range of dependency: 20 women from nursing homes; 16 women who lived in their own homes but requiring social assistance and 20 totally independent women. Each woman was examined for factors that might be associated with her state of dependency: age, socioeconomic status, morale, education, strength of social network, number…

This paper argues that the type of conscience claims made in last decade's spate of cases involving pharmacists' objections to filling birth control prescriptions and cases such as Ms. Means and Mercy Health Partners of Michigan, and even the Affordable Care Act and the Little Sisters of the Poor, as different as they appear to be from each other, share a common element that ties them together and makes them fundamentally different in kind from traditional claims of conscience about which a practical consensus emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. This difference in kind is profoundly significant; s

Resilience is an established concept in family-caregiver research, where it is used to describe how caregivers maintain functioning and adapt to sustained adversity. In long-term family care for older adults with disabilities, however, resilience is ethically ambiguous. Continued care may reflect adaptive capacity, relational commitment and caregiving competence, but it may also be shaped by dependency, moral obligation, cultural expectations and limited alternatives. This article critically examines the ethical implications of caregiver resilience and develops the concept of constrained endur

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) among young Chinese women are shaped by sociocultural norms and moralized expectations around thinness and emotional restraint, yet theory grounded in local experiences remains limited.
METHOD: Using constructivist grounded theory, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 women with current or past ED experiences. Data were analyzed iteratively (open-focused-theoretical coding) with constant comparison, sending analytic memos, and team debriefing to build an explanatory model.
RESULTS: Four interrelated themes were identified: (1) risk background, in

The historical roots of anorexia nervosa are closely linked to religious ascetic traditions. During the Middle Ages, numerous "fasting saints," including Catherine of Siena and Saint Margaret of Hungary, regarded prolonged fasting as a path to spiritual purification, self-mastery, and union with God. The denial of bodily needs symbolized holiness, moral purity, and transcendence. In modern secular societies, however, these meanings have not disappeared but have been transformed. Several scholars argue that the contemporary cult of thinness functions as a quasi-religious ideology in which weigh

This paper explores the potential of memory modulation techniques (MMTs) to alleviate psychological distress among veterans and active-duty soldiers, particularly in cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury. While conventional treatments have shown limited success, emerging pharmacological and neurotechnological interventions-such as propranolol, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and optogenetics-offer new possibilities for mitigating the emotional burden of traumatic memories. For this reason, there appears to be an obligation to invest in the research of such techniqu

Previous research has demonstrated that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) frequently co-occur in military veterans and share similar adverse mental and behavioral health outcomes. While studies have established a robust association between PTSD and dissociative symptoms in veterans, evidence supporting a direct link between exposure to PMIEs and dissociative symptoms has largely been anecdotal. In this cross-sectional study, a volunteer sample of 189 Israeli male combat veterans completed validated self-report questionna

Famed lawyer Clarence Darrow (1857-1938) argued strongly for an early-life public health approach to crime prevention, one that focused on education, poverty reduction, and equity of resources. Due to his defense of marginalized persons and his positions that were often at odds with his legal colleagues and public opinion, he was known as the Big Minority Man. He argued that the assumption of free will-humans as free moral agents-justifies systems of inequity, retributive punishment, and "unadulterated brutality." Here, the authors revisit Darrow's views and expand upon them via contemporary r

The GeSoLei (Great Exhibition for Health Care, Social Welfare, and Physical Exercise) held in Düsseldorf in 1926 was one of the largest exhibitions of the Weimar Republic. At its core was the often visual communication of health-related topics-including the presentation of sexually transmitted diseases. These subjects were conveyed within the complex interplay between medical education, moral normalization, and esthetic staging. The section "Common Diseases, Common Ailments, Common Vices" (Main Section Social Welfare) brought together conditions such as tuberculosis, alcoholism, and syphilis-s

Little is known about distinct factors linked with acting on paraphilic interests or refraining from engaging in paraphilic behaviors. Participants from Canada and the United States (N = 744), aged 19-42 years (M = 29.2; SD = 3.18), were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Participants completed questionnaires about their paraphilic interests and behaviors, as well as potential key factors linked to behavioral engagement (i.e., perceptions of consent, sexual excitation/inhibition, impulsivity, moral disengagement, empathy). Results indicated that higher moral disengagement and impulsiv
