Expression of the four myosin heavy chain isoforms (fast-twitch, slow-twitch, neonatal and embryonal isoforms) was immunohistochemically observed in 500 biopsied limb muscles of neuromuscular disorders. Fast-twitch isoform was expressed in type 2A, 2B and pathologic 2C fibers. Slow-twitch isoform was expressed in type 1 and 2C fibers. Embryonic isoform was expressed in regenerating type 2C fibers of active myopathies such as Duchenne dystrophy and polymyositis. Expression of neonatal isoform, which was longer positive than that of embryonic isoform, was noted in regenerating fibers, denervated

Histological and histochemical analysis of biopsy samples of pubococcygeus muscle obtained from asymptomatic women and from women with stress incontinence of urine, with or without genitourinary prolapse, have been compared. In the asymptomatic women both age and parity appeared to be related to the morphological features of the samples and in particular those obtained from the posterior part of the pubococcygeus. In the symptomatic women there was a significant increase in the number of muscle fibres showing pathological damage which were obtained from the posterior part of the pelvic floor.

Muscle atrophy resulting from peripheral nerve injury (PNI) poses a threat to a patient's mobility and sensitivity. However, an effective method to inhibit muscle atrophy following PNI remains elusive. Drawing inspiration from the sea cucumber, we have integrated microneedles (MNs) and microchannel technology into nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) to develop bionic microneedle NGCs (MNGCs) that emulate the structure and piezoelectric function of sea cucumbers. Morphologically, MNGCs feature an outer surface with outward-pointing needle tips capable of applying electrical stimulation to denervated

UNLABELLED: The lack of specificity in laryngoscopical examination requires that the diagnosis of superior laryngeal and recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement be carried out with the aid of electromyography.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the electrophysiological function of the superior and inferior laryngeal nerves by measuring the electrical activity of the muscles they innervate in dysphonic patients with incomplete closure of the vocal folds during phonation.
METHOD: Thirty-nine patients with incomplete glottic closure were enrolled in a prospective study and had their cricothyroi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Laryngeal reinnervation for bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) patients is a promising technique to achieve good airway, although preserving a good quality of voice. On the other hand, the procedure is not simple. This review explores the recent literature on surgical technique and factors that may contribute to the success.
RECENT FINDINGS: Research and literature in this area are limited due to variability and complexity of the nerve supply. The posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle also receives nerve supply from the interarytenoid branch. Transection of this nerve at

AIMS: Skeletal muscle wasting is associated with many chronic diseases. Effective prevention and treatment of muscle wasting remain as a challenging task due to incomplete understanding of mechanisms by which muscle mass is maintained and regulated. This study investigated the functional role of Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) in skeletal muscle.
MAIN METHODS: Mice with skeletal muscle specific gene knockout of UCHL1 and C2C12 myoblast cells with UCHL1 knockdown were used. Muscle fiber types and size were measured using tissue or cell staining. The mammalian target of rapamycin comp

Following reinnervation of denervated rat tail arteries, nerve-evoked contractions are at least as large as those evoked in normally innervated arteries despite a much lower nerve terminal density. Here nerve-evoked contractions have been investigated after transection of half the sympathetic innervation of normal tail arteries. After 1 week, the noradrenergic plexus 50-70 mm along the tail was about half as dense as control. Excitatory junction potentials recorded in smooth muscle cells of arterial segments isolated in vitro were half their normal amplitude. Surprisingly, nerve-evoked contrac

An experimental model was developed for investigations of traumatically induced vasospasm (TVS) in the central ear artery (CEA) of the awake rabbit. Spasm was induced by a 3-second long pinch with a clip applying forceps exerting a standardized compression force between its claws. The vessel was transilluminated with cold light and inspected from above with an operating microscope equipped with a video camera. The internal diameter was continuously measured. TVS was assessed in terms of its duration, intensity (reduction of initial diameter) and severity (integrated change in diameter over tim

The spinal accessory nerve (SAN) provides motor innervation to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. Injury to the distal segment of this nerve can result in trapezius denervation, leading to lateral scapular winging (LSW), shoulder pain, and impaired arm elevation. While iatrogenic SAN injury most commonly occurs during cervical lymph node biopsies and neck dissections, it may also arise following posterior fossa neurosurgical procedures due to prolonged traction, compression, or mechanical stress during surgical positioning or, less commonly, accidental direct ligation. Recognizing

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive wasting of skeletal muscles. The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is a synapse between motor neurons and skeletal muscle fibers, critical for the control of muscle contraction. The NMJ decline is observed in DMD patients, but the mechanism is unclear. LRP4 serves as a receptor for agrin, a proteoglycan secreted by motor neurons to induce NMJ, and plays a critical role in NMJ formation and maintenance. Interestingly, we found that protein levels of LRP4 were reduced both in muscles of the DMD patient

With this paper, we deliberately challenge the prevailing neurocentric theory of the etiology of spinal bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA). We offer data supporting an alternative view that androgen receptor (AR) acts in skeletal muscles to cause the symptoms of SBMA. While SBMA has been linked to a CAG repeat expansion in the AR gene and mutant AR is presumed to act in motoneurons to cause SBMA, we find that over-expression of wild type AR solely in skeletal muscle fibers results in the same androgen-dependent disease phenotype as when mutant AR is broadly expressed. Like other recent SBMA mouse

An incomplete motor nerve injury or a partial loss of motoneurons leads to a partial denervation of skeletal muscle. As part of a compensatory response, the remaining intact motoneurons undergo peripheral sprouting and increase their motor unit size. Our knowledge about the responses in the more proximal parts of these sprouting motoneurons is sparse, however. We investigated the effects of an incomplete transection of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) nerve in the adult cat on the morphology of the intramedullary axon and axon collateral systems of the remaining intact MG motoneurons. At twelve w

Clinical literature suggests that the wrist extensors show a trend of achieving functional strength earlier than the biceps after spinal cord injury (SCI). Basic research, however, demonstrated that proximal muscles recover earlier than distal muscles after partial denervation. The purpose of this study was to compare biceps to extensor carpi radialis (ECR) recovery of muscle strength in 39 motor complete cervical SCI patients. Biceps (n = 19) and ECR (n = 20) with a 72 hour or 1 week motor grade of 1/5 were compared. Testing was performed weekly for 1 month, and again at 2, 3, 6 and 12 months

The effects of the venoms of the spiders Latrodectus mactans tredecimguttatus (black widow) and Latrodectus mactans hasselti (red back) on sensory nerve terminals in muscle spindles were studied in the mouse. A sublethal dose of venom was injected into tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles of one leg. After survival from 30 minutes to 6 weeks muscles were examined in serial paraffin sections impregnated with silver or by electron microscopy. Sensory endings became swollen, some within 30 minutes, while over the next few hours there was progressive degeneration of annulospiral

A 72-year old woman had been suffered from a dysesthesia in the left median nerve distribution, followed by a dysesthesia in the right ulnar distribution. Neurological examination revealed weakness in the right intrinsic hand muscles with the ipsilateral thenar and hyothenar atrophy. Paradoxical preservation of the left thenar muscles was a clinical challenge. Nerve conduction studies disclosed bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome and the right cubital tunnel syndrome. In needle electromyography, however, the left abductor pollicis brevis and opponens pollicis muscles had normal motor unit potenti

A 16-year-old female patient with symptoms and signs compatible with neuromyotonia was studied with various neurophysiological tests and with muscle biopsy. Nerve conduction studies revealed signs of axonal motor neuropathy. EMG showed denervation in distal muscles, and moderate neurogenic changes in other muscles. Abundant spontaneous motor unit activity was recorded in all muscles. This activity did not disappear upon proximal nerve blockade with local anaesthetics. Based on the shape of spontaneous discharges and their behaviour on nerve stimulation and during voluntary effort, the site of

We report the case of a 77-year-old woman with a two-year history of abdominal non rhythmic myoclonus. Neurological examination was normal. Bursts of myoclonic activity were recorded from the rectus abdominis muscle and then from the external oblique muscle after a delay of 40 ms. Magnetic resonance imaging of dorsal spine revealed T7-T8 and T9-T10 disc protrusions without root compression. Electroencephalography, back-averaging-EEG, brain computed tomography scan, motor and sensory evoked potentials revealed no abnormality, thus ruling out the possibility that the myoclonic jerks might be of

Myoadenylate deaminase (MAD) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the purine nucleotide cycle which is biochemically linked to glycolysis and the citric cycle and thereby providing energy during intense muscular activity. In muscle fibers, myoadenylate deaminase operates at considerably higher activity levels than in other organs. First detected using enzyme-histochemical methods, it now appears that deficiency of myoadenylate deaminase is one of the most frequent enzyme defects in muscle. The primary defect may occur as an isolated nosological entity or not infrequently it is also associated with a

Shipyard noise is a variable noise which induces permanent threshold shift (PTS) in exposed workers. In humans, the stapedius reflex has been found to be very stable in this type of exposure. Temporary threshold shift (TTS) in the absence of stapedius reflex has been found to extend downwards through the speech-frequencies instead of showing a high frequency dip as when the stapedius reflex is normal. The features of PTS produced by the same type of noise was investigated in rabbits with and without functioning middle ear muscles. The auditory sensitivity was measured by auditory brain stem re
