Predicting optimal electrical stimulation for repetitive human muscle activation.

Functional electrical stimulation is the use of electrical currents to activate paralyzed muscles to produce functional movements. Muscle force output must meet or exceed the external load to maintain a posture or produce movements. A mathematical force-fatigue modeling system that predicts muscle force responses during repetitive electrical stimulation has been developed in our laboratory to help identify stimulation patterns that optimize force output for individual subjects. This study tests how well this model predicts the number of contractions that can be maintained above a required forc

Group III/IV muscle afferents limit the intramuscular metabolic perturbation during whole body exercise in humans.

KEY POINTS: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of group III/IV muscle afferents in limiting the endurance exercise-induced metabolic perturbation assayed in muscle biopsy samples taken from locomotor muscle. Lumbar intrathecal fentanyl was used to attenuate the central projection of μ-opioid receptor-sensitive locomotor muscle afferents during a 5 km cycling time trial. The findings suggest that the central projection of group III/IV muscle afferent feedback constrains voluntary neural 'drive' to working locomotor muscle and limits the exercise-induced intramuscular metabolic

Task-Specific Rescue Loading Redistributes Lower Limb Joint Work During Simulated Sprinting Across Fatigue States in Firefighters.

Firefighters routinely perform short-distance sprints while wearing or carrying occupational gear. Nevertheless, how fatigue interacts with task-specific loading to shape the distribution of mechanical work across lower-limb joints remains poorly understood. This study aimed to determine how fatigue state and task-specific rescue loading affect sprint performance, impact loading, lower-limb joint mechanics, joint work contribution, and muscle activation in male firefighters. Fifty-three male firefighters completed four simulated rescue sprinting tasks under five fatigue conditions: non-fatigue

The Effect of Wheel Exercise on Functional Indices of Cachexia in Tumor-bearing Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related fatigue and muscle wasting have received significant attention over the last few decades with the goal of establishing interventions that can improve cancer patient life quality and survival. Increased physical activity has shown to reduce cancer-associated fatigue and has been proposed as a promising therapeutic to attenuate cancer-induced wasting. However, significant gaps remain in our understanding of how physical activity affects the compositional and functional changes that initiate muscle wasting. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effect

No Effect of New Zealand Blackcurrant Extract on Recovery of Muscle Damage Following Running a Half-Marathon.

New Zealand blackcurrant (NZBC) contains anthocyanins, known to moderate blood flow and display anti-inflammatory properties that may improve recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage. The authors examined whether NZBC extract supplementation enhances recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage after a half-marathon race. Following a randomized, double-blind, independent groups design, 20 (eight women) recreational runners (age 30 ± 6 years, height 1.73 ± 0.74 m, body mass 68.5 ± 7.8 kg, half-marathon finishing time 1:56:33 ± 0:18:08 hr:min:s) ingested either two 300-mg/day capsules of NZB

Sex-Based Differences in Fatigue During Repeated Sprinting in 9- to 14-Year-Old Children Are Task- and Metric-Dependent.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated sex-based differences in sprint performance and fatigue among 9-14-year-olds using two repeated-sprint protocols: the Muscle Power Sprint Test (MPST; 6 × 15 m) and the Children's Repetitive Intermittent Sprint Performance test (CRISP; 6 × 30 m). Additionally, four fatigue metrics were compared: decay (first vs. last sprint), fatigue index (fastest vs. slowest sprint), sprint decrement (ideal vs. actual total time), and slope IP (regression slope across all sprints). METHODS: A total of 140 children (9-14 years; 70 females, 70 males) performed the two tests

Metabolic and contractile influence of carbonic anhydrase III in skeletal muscle is age dependent.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) III is very abundant in type I skeletal muscle, but its function is still debated. Our aims were to examine CA III expression during growth and determine whether the effects of CA inhibition previously observed in adult muscles could be seen in younger rats in which CA III levels are lower. CA III content and activity were measured in soleus muscles from 10- to 100-day-old rats, and the influence of CA inhibitor on fatigue and hexosemonophosphate content was quantified in vitro. CA III activity and content increased fivefold between 10 and 100 days of age. Data analysis

The Application of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation in Sports Psychology.

The problem of sports psychological fatigue has become one of the focal points of common concern among scholars at home and abroad. Athletes will face many problems and challenges in competition or training, and if they are not handled properly, they will have negative experiences, which will affect the training benefits and develop psychological fatigue. Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), which contains transcranial direct current stimulation, transcranial alternating current stimulation, and transcranial random noise stimulation, is a noninvasive brain stimulation method. By applying

Effect of fatigue on hamstring reflex responses and posterior-anterior tibial translation in men and women.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture ranks among the most common injuries in sports. The incidence of ACL injuries is considerably higher in females than in males and the underlying mechanisms are still under debate. Furthermore, it has been suggested that muscle fatigue can be a risk factor for ACL injuries. We investigated gender differences in hamstring reflex responses and posterior-anterior tibial translation (TT) before and after fatiguing exercise. We assessed the isolated movement of the tibia relative to the femur in the sagittal plane as a consequence of mechanically induced TT i…

[Comparison of the increase of stiffness produced during sinusoidal stretch of the long fibula muscle in the cat by the contraction of slow or fast motor units].

The increase in stiffness of cat peroneus longus muscle elicited by the contraction of homogeneous groups of motor units (slow, fast fatigue-resistant and fast fatigable) was measured during sinusoidal stretches (20-80 Hz) of small amplitude (40-100 micron). For comparable tetanic tensions, slow units increase muscle stiffness more than fast unit.

Method to test the long-term stability of functional electrical stimulation via multichannel electrodes (e.g., applicable for laryngeal pacing) and to define best points for stimulation: in vivo animal analysis.

The study aim was to identify and analyze intramuscular electrically sensitive points. Electrically sensitive points are herein defined as p … g long stimulation periods. The animal model identified the stimulation points for minimal possible muscle fatigue stimulation as being located close to the points of entrance of the nerve into the muscle. Stimulation causing an initially strong contraction response is no indication of optimal location of the stimulation electrode in terms of chronic stimulation …

Localization and function of Xinα in mouse skeletal muscle.

The Xin repeat-containing proteins were originally found in the intercalated discs of cardiac muscle with implicated roles in cardiac development and function. A pair of paralogous genes, Xinα (Xirp1) and Xinβ (Xirp2), is present in mammals. Ablation of the mouse Xinα (mXinα) did not affect heart development but caused late-onset adulthood cardiac hypertrophy and cardiomyopathy with conductive defects. Both mXinα and mXinβ are also found in the myotendinous junction (MTJ) of skeletal muscle. Here we investigated the structural and functional significance of mXinα in skeletal muscle. In additio

Physiological basis for contractile dysfunction in heart failure.

The purpose of this review is to enlighten the mechanisms of skeletal muscle dysfunction in heart failure. The muscle hypothesis suggests that chronic heart failure (CHF) symptoms, dyspnoea and fatigue are due to skeletal muscle alterations. Hyperventilation due to altered ergoreflex seems to be the cause of shortness of breath. Qualitative and quantitative changes occurring in the skeletal muscle, such as muscle wastage and shift from slow to fast fibers type, are likely to be responsible for fatigue. Mechanisms leading to muscle wastage in chronic heart failure, include cytokine-triggered sk

Graft-Specific Neuromuscular Responses and EMG Activities During Running Before and After Running-Induced Fatigue in Individuals with ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue during intense activity challenges the neuromuscular system and can reveal deficits not evident during lower-demand functional tasks. In individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), differences in graft source may be associated with graft-specific neuromuscular adaptations. Although fatigue-related neuromuscular deficits after ACLR have been reported, few studies have examined whether these responses differ according to graft type during running. This study investigated the effects of running-induced fatigue on lower-limb muscle activity during the sta

Fatigue in patients with myasthenia gravis. A systematic review of the literature.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the neuromuscular junction. Although a hallmark of MG is muscle fatigability due to dysfunction of the neuromuscular junction (peripheral fatigue), a large number of MG patients also report symptoms of central fatigue, defined as an experienced lack of energy, physically and/or mentally. We systematically reviewed the literature on all aspects of central fatigue in MG. Results were categorized in 5 domains: prevalence, diagnosis, pathophysiology, treatment or impact. The prevalence of patient-reported fatigue varies between 42 an

Isometric force and endurance in skeletal muscle of mice devoid of all known thyroid hormone receptors.

The importance of thyroid hormone receptors for isometric force, endurance and content of specific muscle enzymes was studied in isolated slow-twitch soleus and fast-twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles in mice deficient in all known subtypes of thyroid hormone receptors (i.e. TR alpha1, beta1, beta2 and beta3). The weights of soleus and EDL muscles were lower in TR-deficient (TRalpha1-/-beta-/-) mice than in wild-type controls.
