[The spatial distribution of population exposure to outdoor air pollution in Valencia (Spain) and its association with a privation index].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate spatial variation in exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution in the city of Valencia, Spain, and its association with socioeconomic deprivation and age. METHODS: Census tract population data were obtained from the National Statistics Institute of Spain. Outdoor NO2 was monitored in 100 sites in the study area, through the use of passive samplers, in three campaigns between 2002 and April 2004. Land use regression (LUR) was used to obtain a map of NO2 levels. The LUR predictions were compared with the NO2 level obtained by: a) the nearest sampler of the monitori

Association of health professional shortage areas and cardiovascular risk factor prevalence, awareness, and control in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

BACKGROUND- Individuals living in primary care health professional shortage areas (PC-HPSA), often have difficulty obtaining medical care; however, no previous studies have examined association of pc-hpsa residence with prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS- To examine this question, the authors used data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis baseline examination (2000-2002). Outcomes included the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, and obesity as well as the awareness and control of diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia

Future directions for neurobehavioral studies of environmental neurotoxicants.

Three proposals for enriching neurobehavioral toxicology studies are discussed. First, while IQ has proven useful as a primary endpoint, such apical measures are limited: they obscure important individual differences, tend to reflect the product rather than the process of learning, sample a limited range of intelligent behaviors, and are insensitive to critical outcomes such as learning disabilities. In terms of societal disease burden, behavioral and psychiatric morbidities might be even more important than cognitive morbidities. Such endpoints warrant careful attention. Second, the models of

Upstream nurse-community partnership strategies to improve social determinants of health: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are vital in improving the social determinants of health (SDOH) through community partnerships. While individual-level SDOH interventions are well studied, less is known about nursing strategies that support systemic, community-based change. PURPOSE: To examine the scope, characteristics, and gaps in the literature on nurse-community partnership strategies to address SDOH. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Academic Search Premier, and SocINDEX. The search identified 20 records describing nursing strategies implemented with community part

Association between Toxoplasma gondii IgG seropositivity and schizophrenia: A case-control study in Colombia.

Whether Toxoplasma gondii contributes to schizophrenia remains debated. We evaluated this association using a matched case-control design with two comparison groups and examined serotype distribution and clinical/cognitive correlates. We included 100 schizophrenia cases, 97 genetic controls (biological relatives up to third degree), and 100 environmental controls (age- and neighborhood-matched). Anti-T. gondii IgG/IgM were measured using an enzyme-linked fluorescence assay; among IgG-positive participants, serotyping was performed with GRA6-based ELISA. Associations were estimated using unadju

Single-cell spatial proteomics of non-relapse small cell lung cancer identifies tumor microenvironment determinants of survival.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is characterized by high malignancy and early propensity for metastasis, and modest response to immunotherapy due to the immunosuppressive microenvironment. Surgical intervention has shown benefits in treating early-stage SCLC. However, most patients experience recurrence after surgery. The factors associated with relapse free survival in these patients remain unclear. We collected operation specimens from ten early-stage SCLC patients (N0M0), conducted long-term follow-up, and grouped them based on disease status. Subsequently, we performed a retrospective analys

Barriers to HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use Among Women in the US: A Systematic Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: The high acquisition rate of HIV infection among women in the United States is concerning. Despite the FDA approving the first pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drug in 2012, PrEP utilization remains significantly lower among women. This literature review aims to analyze the current body of research concerning HIV PrEP usage among women in the US. METHODS: A search of three medical databases was conducted. After the screening, 19 studies were selected for analysis. A risk of bias assessment was performed. RESULTS: A final set of records meeting the inclusion criteria (n=19) was i

Residential Area Characteristics Are Associated With Asthma Burden in Children.

BACKGROUND: Wheezing illnesses, especially those triggered by rhinovirus infection, cause a major disease burden, and they often precede asthma. Environmental exposures are known to affect recurrence of wheezing. We investigated the relations of population density, greenness (forested areas), and socioeconomic factors of the living surroundings to the burden of asthma in children with prior bronchiolitis. METHODS: Three hundred and ninety-four children, aged 0-24 months, with doctor-diagnosed bronchiolitis were enrolled in the MARC-30 Finland study. We assessed the children's early-life expos

The association between housing stability and perceived quality of life among emerging adults with a history of homelessness.

Many cities across the United States are experiencing homelessness at crisis levels, including rises in the numbers of unhoused emerging adults (18-25). Emerging adults experiencing homelessness may be at higher risk of experiencing negative outcomes, given that being unhoused increases risk for a variety of behaviors. To better understand the current living circumstances of emerging adults with a history of homelessness, as well as their perceptions about associations between housing stability and quality of life (QOL), we conducted 30 semi-structured in-depth interviews with individuals recr

Baseline Targeted Moderation in a Trial of the Family Check-Up 4 Health: Potential Explanations for Finding Few Practical Effects.

Not all participants will benefit equally from even well-established, evidence-based prevention programs. For this reason, the field of prevention science is beginning to embrace individual tailoring of interventions. The Family Check-Up was among the first prevention programs to tailor at the family level as opposed to the more prevalent focus on adapting programs for different cultures, genders, and other immutable participant characteristics. Despite tailoring, families with lower levels of stress and parental mental health issues, children with lower baseline conduct problems, and families

Impact of childhood abuse on suicide-related behavior: Analysis using marginal structural models.

BACKGROUND: Childhood abuse is associated with adult suicidal behaviors, partially mediated by mental disorders. However, the direct effect of childhood abuse not mediated by mental disorders is uncertain because the same risk factors serve as mediators and confounders of mental disorders and suicidal behaviors. The aim of the study was to estimate the direct effect of childhood abuse not mediated by mental disorders on suicidal behaviors using marginal structural models. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data of Japanese adults in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures (The Japanese Study on Strat

Cholera outbreak in a naïve rural community in Northern Nigeria: the importance of hand washing with soap, September 2010.

INTRODUCTION: Cholera outbreaks in rural communities are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Effective interventions to control these outbreaks require identification of source and risk factors for infection. In September, 2010 we investigated a cholera outbreak in Bashuri, a cholera naïve rural community in northern Nigeria to identify the risk factors and institute control measures. METHODS: We conducted an unmatched case-control study. We defined a case as any resident of Bashuri community two years and above with acute watery diarrhea with or without vomiting and a control as an
