The influence of hostility on electroencephalographic activity and memory functioning during an affective memory task.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the neural correlates of emotional learning and hostility via the use of EEG and the Auditory Affective Verbal Learning Test (AAVL). METHODS: The Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (CMHO) was used to identify right-handed men (N=16) and women (N=44) as low or high hostile. Participants were administered the positive and negative word lists of the AAVL lists, and were asked to recall the words during a 5-trial paradigm. EEG data were recorded from 19 scalp sites before and following learning trials; separate bandwidths of the EEG spectrum were analy

Effects of dialectic-behavioral-therapy on the neural correlates of affective hyperarousal in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Affective hyperarousal is the hallmark of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and the main target for dialectic-behavioral-therapy (DBT). This pilot study examined whether improved regulation of affective arousal following DBT translates into changes in relevant neural systems. METHODS: We applied five sequential fMRI scans over a 12-week in-patient treatment program. Six female BPD patients and six controls were included in an event-related fMRI design which induced emotional arousal through standardized images. In addition to analyzing valence-based stimulus categories over ti

Rotation of the myocardial wall of the outflow tract is implicated in the normal positioning of the great arteries.

Congenital heart defects frequently involve a failure of outflow tract (OFT) formation during development. We analyzed the remodeling of the OFT, using the y96-Myf5-nlacZ-16 transgene, which marks a subpopulation of myocardial cells of the pulmonary trunk. Expression analyses of reporter transcript and protein suggest that the myocardial wall of the OFT rotates before and during the formation of the great arteries. Rotational movement was confirmed by Di-I injection experiments with cultured embryos. We subsequently examined the expression of the transgene in mouse models for OFT defects. In h

A prospective, randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind study of pelvic electromagnetic therapy for the treatment of chronic pelvic pain syndrome with 1 year of followup.

PURPOSE: Male chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a condition of uncertain etiology and treatment is often unsatisfactory. There is evidence that the symptom complex may result from pelvic floor muscular dysfunction and/or neural hypersensitivity/inflammation. We hypothesized that the application of electromagnetic therapy may have a neuromodulating effect on pelvic floor spasm and neural hypersensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following full Stamey localization men with National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases category III prostatitis were prospectively randomized to rec

Nematode chondroitin polymerizing factor showing cell-/organ-specific expression is indispensable for chondroitin synthesis and embryonic cell division.

Chondroitin polymerization was first demonstrated in vitro when human chondroitin synthase (ChSy) was coexpressed with human chondroitin polymerizing factor (ChPF), which is homologous to ChSy but has little glycosyltransferase activity. To analyze the biological function of chondroitin, the Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of human ChSy (sqv-5) was recently cloned, and the expression of its product was depleted by RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) and deletion mutagenesis. Blocking of chondroitin synthesis resulted in defects of cytokinesis in early embryogenesis, and eventually, cell division

Age-related changes in androgen receptor levels in cranial nerve nuclei of male rats.

Sensory and motor events are important for mating, and several cranial nerve nuclei mediating these events contain androgen receptors (AR). Since mating behavior declines with age, we tested whether AR binding is decreased in cranial nerve nuclei of old male rats. Cytosol and cell nuclear androgen receptor (AR) binding was assessed in the cochlear, hypoglossal and facial nuclei in young (4 months) and old (20 months) male Fischer 344 rats. For comparison with other neural and non-neural tissue, AR binding in combined hypothalamus, preoptic area and amygdala (HPA), and muscle tissue from tongue

Expression of isoforms of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and polysialic acid during the development of the Bufo arenarum olfactory system.

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that promotes Ca(2+)-independent cell-cell adhesion, is expressed as various isoforms generated by alternative splicing. In this study, the expression of the 180 kDa isoform (180-NCAM), total NCAM (180, 140 and 120 kDa isoforms) and the polysialic acid moiety of NCAM (PSA) were analyzed during the development of the olfactory system of the toad Bufo arenarum using specific antibodies and immunofluorescence light microscopy. NCAM and PSA were not found in the ectodermal thickening corresponding to the olfactory

Nervous system antigen-5, an antigenic cell surface component of neuroectodermal origin.

The antigenic cell surface component NS-5 (nervous system antigen-5) is recognized by antiserum raised in C3H.SW/Sn mice against cerebellum of 4-day-old C57BL/6J mice. When analyzed in the cytotoxicity test the antiserum detects a cell surface antigen or set of antigens present not only an cerebellum but also other parts of the central nervous system, including retina, as well as on mature spermatozoa and to a lesser degree on kidney. All other non-neural tissues tested, liver, splee, thymocytes, muscle, testis, adrenal gland and epidermis do not express detectable amounts of the antigen. Amon

In recent years the advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been seen to play an important role in human well-being, in particular enabling novel forms of human-computer interaction for people with a disability. In this paper, we propose a sEMG-controlled 3D game that leverages a deep learning-based architecture for real-time gesture recognition. The 3D game experience developed in the study is focused on rehabilitation exercises, allowing individuals with certain disabilities to use low-cost sEMG sensors to control the game experience. For this purpose, we acquired a novel dataset of se

Trying to predict and explain the presence of African trypanosomes in tsetse flies.

Trypanosome infections identified by polymerase chain reaction on field-caught tsetse flies from various locations were analyzed with respect to factors intrinsic and extrinsic to the trypanosome-tsetse association. These factors were then simultaneously analyzed using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and the important factors were identified to predict and explain the presence of trypanosomes in tsetse. Among 4 trypanosome subgroups (Trypanosoma brucei s.l., T. congolense of the 'savannah' and of the 'riverine-forest' types, and T. simiae), the presence of the 2 types of T. congolense was pr

Classifying sensory patterns and their effects on locomotion and tremor.

Methods are described for analyzing the patterns of sensory activity in peripheral nerves during unrestrained behaviour. In locomotion, nerves supplying ankle extensors and flexors typically show two bursts of sensory activity per step cycle. Variations in sensory input may be important in modulating the ongoing oscillation. Altered sensory input may also change the phase of an ongoing oscillation (as in human essential tremor) or may only have a transient reflex effect (as in Parkinsonian tremor). Various types of interactions can be analyzed using a model of the peripheral neuromuscular syst

Prior information-assisted integrative analysis of multiple datasets.

MOTIVATION: Analyzing genetic data to identify markers and construct predictive models is of great interest in biomedical research. However, limited by cost and sample availability, genetic studies often suffer from the "small sample size, high dimensionality" problem. To tackle this problem, an integrative analysis that collectively analyzes multiple datasets with compatible designs is often conducted. For regularizing estimation and selecting relevant variables, penalization and other regularization techniques are routinely adopted. "Blindly" searching over a vast number of variables may not

Neuromuscular mechanisms underlying rhythmic auditory stimulation revealed through muscle synergy and intermuscular coherence analyses.

BACKGROUND: Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) has been shown to enhance gait function and rhythmic motor control in neurological populations by modulating neural circuits responsible for movement coordination. However, the underlying physiological mechanisms, particularly regarding muscle synergy and neural drive, remain insufficiently understood. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does RAS influence gait rhythmicity and neuromuscular coordination, as reflected in muscle synergy and intermuscular coherence? METHODS: Twenty-five healthy young adults performed gait trials under two conditions: without a

Cortical electrical stimulation modulates hippocampal electrophysiological activity in mouse brain slices of temporal lobe epilepsy.

To investigate structural and functional alterations in the prefrontal cortex-hippocampus (PFC-HPC) circuit in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and the regulatory effects of cortical electrical stimulation on hippocampal activity. A kainic acid (KA)-induced TLE mouse model was used. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analyzed PFC-HPC structural connectivity. Optimized PFC-HPC brain slices were prepared for electrophysiological recording via high-density microelectrode arrays (HD-MEAs), and cortical electrical stimulation at different intensities was applied. DTI revealed abnormal diffusion metrics fra

Substance P-expressing neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus mediate chronic cough hypersensitivity via the hypothalamus-airway neural pathway.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increased cough sensitivity is the key pathophysiological mechanism of chronic cough. Although previous studies have focused on peripheral airway receptor sensitization, the role of the central nervous system-particularly the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN)-remains unclear. Whether substance P (SP)-expressing PVN neurons contribute to cough hypersensitivity remains unknown. METHODS: Three-week-old Hartley guinea pigs were divided into three groups: citric acid (CA), saline control (SA), and blank control (CON). A cough hypersensitivity model was induced by i
