Transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with cerebellar stroke.

Conduction time of the central motor pathways (CMCT) by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was performed within the first two weeks in 7 patients with isolated hemicerebellar lesions after stroke. Cerebellar infarcts were small (< 2 cm in diameter) in 5 patients and no brainstem structure was involved in CT studies. The threshold (3 cases) and CMCT (4 cases) were abnormal or asymmetric by stimulation of the motor cortex contralateral to the impaired hemicerebellum. The follow-up study in 2 patients revealed electrophysiological improvement closely related to clinical cerebellar recovery r

Hearing impairment in Parkinson's disease: expanding the nonmotor phenotype.

The objective of this study was to evaluate hearing impairment in patients affected by Parkinson's disease compared with hearing scores observed in normal age- and sex-matched controls. One hundred eighteen consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease were screened. Severity of motor symptoms and staging were measured with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (section III) and the Hoehn and Yahr scale. Audiometric evaluation consisted of a comprehensive audiologic case history and questionnaire, visual otoscopic examination, acoustic immittance measures (tympan

The effect of curcumin on ethanol induced changes in suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and pineal.

(1) Circadian clocks have been localized to discrete sites within the nervous system of several organisms and in mammals to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the anterior hypothalamus. The SCN controls and regulates the production and discharge of melatonin (hormonal message of darkness) from the pineal gland via a multisynaptic efferent pathway. The nocturnal rise in melatonin production from serotonin results due to an increased activity of serotonin N-acetyl transferase (NAT). (2) The complex interaction between alcohol and biological clock need to be understood as alcoholism results in

Sensorimotor modulation of human cortical swallowing pathways.

1. Transcranial magnetic stimulation over motor areas of cerebral cortex in man can activate short latency bilateral cortical projections to the pharynx and oesophagus. In the present paper we investigate the interaction between pathways from each hemisphere and explore how activity in these pathways is modulated by afferent feedback from the face, pharynx and oesophagus. 2. Comparison of unilateral and bilateral stimulation (using interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 1, 5 or 10 ms between shocks) showed spatial summation of responses from each hemisphere at an ISI of 1 ms, indicating that cortic

Afferent large fiber polyneuropathy predicts the development of postherpetic neuralgia.

Acute zoster infection may be followed by a chronic pain syndrome, i.e., postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Besides older age, the intensity of pain and neuronal damage within the acutely affected body region are regarded as predictors or risk factors for PHN. As an alternative approach an underlying peripheral polyneuropathy may be considered as potential co-factor. Is a preexisting generalized impairment of certain fiber classes important in initiating chronic pain states after subsequent localized nerve lesion due to zoster infection? Neurophysiological tests of different efferent and afferent s

Differential modulation by pulmonary stretch afferents of some reflex cardioinhibitory responses in the cat.

1. Cats were anaesthetized with a mixture of chloralose and urethane, and were artificially ventilated, the thorax being opened via a medial sternotomy. 2. Various cardiovascular receptors were stimulated during reflex inhibition of the central inspiratory neurones produced by electrical stimulation of both superior laryngeal nerves simultaneously, while the afferent input from the lungs was held constant by temporarily interrupting artificial respiration, the lungs being held static in their expiratory position. 3. Reflex cardioinhibitory responses were elicited by stimulation of (a) the caro

Localization of putative transmitters in the hippocampal formation: with a note on the connections to septum and hypothalamus.

Biochemical assays on microdissected samples, denervation studies, subcellular fractionation, and light and electron microscopic autoradiography of high affinity uptake have been performed to study the cellular localization of transmitter candidates in the rat hippocampal formation. High affinity uptake of glutamate and aspartate is localized in the terminals of several excitatory systems, such as the entorhino-dentate fibres (perforant path), mossy fibres (from granular cells) and pyramidal cell axons. Thus, in stratum radiatum and oriens of CA1, 85% of glutamate and asparate uptake and 40% o

Calbindin-immunoreactive neurons in the reticular formation of the rat brainstem: catecholamine content and spinal projections.

Calbindin-D28k (calbindin) is a calcium-binding protein that is distributed widely in the rat brain. The localisation of calbindin immunoreactivity in the medulla oblongata and its colocalisation with adrenaline-synthesising neurons [phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase-immunoreactive (PNMT-IR)] was examined (Granata and Chang [1994] Brain Res. 645:265-277). However, detailed information about the distribution of calbindin-IR neurons in the reticular formation of the medulla oblongata in particular is lacking. In this report, the authors address this issue with an emphasis on the quantitatio

Retrograde transport of nerve growth factor (NGF) in motoneurons of developing rats: assessment of potential neurotrophic effects.

The potential functional significance of nerve growth factor (NGF) receptors in spinal motoneurons was studied in newborn rats. 125I-NGF was specifically retrogradely transported by motoneurons from their peripheral nerve terminals. This transport was blocked by an excess of unlabeled NGF but not by cytochrome c. 125I-cytochrome c was not transported. The monoclonal anti-rat NGF receptor antibody, but not a control antibody, was also transported. Despite this ability of motoneurons to transport NGF, treatment of newborn rats with this factor did not increase motoneuron size or synthesis of neu

Cochlear nerve activity after intense sound exposure in neonatal chicks.

1. Single-neuron behavior in the cochlear nerve of neonatal (3-day-old) chicks was examined after exposure to a 120-dB SPL pure tone (0.9 kHz) for 48 h. Exposed animals were tested after 0 days or 12 days of recovery. Nonexposed chicks, age-matched to the exposed animals, formed two control groups. 2. Spectral response plots were obtained from each cell. These plots described the neuron discharge rates in response to 1,767 tone burst stimuli, each with a unique frequency-intensity combination. The tone bursts were presented at frequencies between 0.1 and 4.5 kHz and for intensities between 0 a

Three Gaseous Neurotransmitters, Nitric oxide, Carbon Monoxide, and Hydrogen Sulfide, Are Involved in the Neurogenic Relaxation Responses of the Porcine Internal Anal Sphincter.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The internal anal sphincter (IAS) plays an important role in maintaining continence and a number of neurotransmitters are known to regulate IAS tone. The aim of this study was to determine the relative importance of the neurotransmitters involved in the relaxant and contractile responses of the porcine IAS. METHODS: Responses of isolated strips of IAS to electrical field stimulation (EFS) were obtained in the absence and presence of inhibitors of neurotransmitter systems. RESULTS: Contractile responses of the sphincter to EFS were unaffected by the muscarinic receptor antago

Anatomical organization of the brainstem octavolateralis area of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.

Anatomical studies were undertaken to analyze the brainstem organization of the auditory, vestibular, and lateral line nuclei in a teleost, the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. Neuronal cytoarchitectonics and horseradish peroxidase label of cranial nerves were utilized to delineate the borders of the five octavus and two lateralis brainstem nuclei. Each of the eight octavolateralis nerves were labeled individually to compare and contrast their central projections. Projections of the three semicircular canals were found to be largely overlapping. Terminal fields were observed within the eminentia

Conduction properties of epidurally recorded spinal cord potentials following lower limb stimulation in man.

Spinal somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in 35 neurologically normal patients undergoing surgery for scoliosis. During posterior procedures the recording electrodes were placed in the dorsal epidural space and during anterior operations in the intervertebral discs. Stimulation was of the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa and the posterior tibial and sural nerves at the ankle. At thoracic levels the response consisted of at least 3 components with different peripheral excitation thresholds and spinal conduction velocities (range 35-85 m/sec). All components were conducted mainly i

Gastric secretion.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gastric acid facilitates the digestion of protein and the absorption of iron, calcium, and vitamin B12. It also protects against bacterial overgrowth and enteric infection, including prion disease. When homeostatic mechanisms malfunction, the volume and concentration of acid may overwhelm mucosal defense mechanisms, leading to duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. This article reviews recent knowledge contributing to understanding of the regulation of gastric acid secretion at the central, peripheral, and intracellular levels. RECENT FINDINGS:

Partial peripheral neuropathy and denervation induced adrenoceptor supersensitivity. Functional studies in an experimental model.

Sciatic nerve ligation in rats (chronic constriction injury (CCI)) induces clinical signs and symptoms that mimic human conditions of neuropathic origin, such as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). Denervation-induced supersensitivity to (circulating) catecholamines has been implicated in sympathetic dysfunction in the CCI model as well as in RSD. In the present paper we studied functional properties of sympathetic innervation in subcutaneous resistance arteries, isolated from the hind paw of rats 3 weeks after ligation. Contractile responses to electric field stimulation of adrenergic nerves

Interlimb reflex activity after spinal cord injury in man: strengthening response patterns are consistent with ongoing synaptic plasticity.

OBJECTIVE: Previous reports from our laboratory have described short-latency contractions in muscles of the distal upper limb following stimulation of lower limb nerves or skin in persons with injury to the cervical spinal cord. It takes 6 or more months for interlimb reflexes (ILR) to appear following acute spinal cord injury (SCI), suggesting they might be due to new synaptic interconnections between lower limb sensory afferents and motoneurons in the cervical enlargement. In this study, we asked if once formed, the strength of these synaptic connections increased over time, a finding that w

Effects of acute and chronic midthoracic spinal cord injury on neural circuits for male sexual function. II. Descending pathways.

In normal animals, microstimulation of the medullary reticular formation (MRF) has two effects on efferent neurons in the motor branch of the pudendal nerve (PudM). MRF microstimulation depresses motoneuron reflex discharges (RD) elicited by dorsal nerve of the penis (DNP) stimulation and produces long latency sympathetic fiber responses (SFR). The midthoracic spinal location of these descending MRF-PudM projections was studied electrophysiologically using a variety of acute and chronic lesions. Chronic lesions, in 27 mature male rats, included dorsal (DHx) or lateral (LHx) hemisections or mod

Medial olivocochlear efferent system in humans studied with amplitude-modulated tones.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) are assumed to be generated by outer hair cells (OHCs). It is now generally accepted that EOAEs represent a means of functional exploration of the active micromechanical properties of OHCs. Efferent fibers of the medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) are connected along the sides and the bases of OHCs. Some studies have shown that a suppression effect on EOAE amplitude is induced by the MOCS neurons during contralateral stimulation, presumably by modification of OHC motility. The contralateral acoustic stimuli used in experiments on the EOAE suppression effect

Caffeic acid and resveratrol ameliorate cellular damage in cell and Drosophila models of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 through upregulation of Nrf2 pathway.

Polyglutamine (polyQ)-expanded mutant ataxin-3 protein, which is prone to misfolding and aggregation, leads to cerebellar neurotoxicity in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), an inherited PolyQ neurodegenerative disease. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, the pathogenic effects of mutant ataxin-3 are associated with dysregulation of transcription, protein degradation, mitochondrial function, apoptosis, and antioxidant potency. In the present study we explored the protective role and possible mechanism of caffeic acid (CA) and resveratrol (Res) in cells and Drosophila expressing mutant
