From Synthesis to Failure: In Situ Characterization of Lithium-Ion Battery Cathodes.

Developing high-performance, long-life lithium-ion batteries requires an in-depth understanding of cathode material synthesis, lithium-ion (de)intercalation mechanisms, and structural failure processes. Traditional ex situ characterization techniques, however, capture only static snapshots and often introduce artifacts by disrupting the material's original state. In contrast, advanced in situ characterization techniques enable real-time, non-destructive monitoring of dynamic evolution in crystal structure, morphology, and chemical states under operating conditions. This review systematically s

Cu+-Driven Ferroionic Structure and Pressure-Tunable Magnetism in Layered Thiophosphate CuVP2S6.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets offer a versatile platform to explore fundamental physics and low-dimensional functionalities. Metal thiophosphates (MTPs) with mobile Cu+ ions exhibit a ferroionic state, where polarization arises from ionic redistribution among multiple nearly degenerate sites. CuVP2S6 uniquely combines intrinsic ferromagnetism from the V sublattice with Cu+-driven ferroionic configurational freedom, enabling direct exploration of how ionic dynamics influence magnetic interactions. Herein, high-quality CuVP2S6 single crystals are synthesized, and their structu

Additive-Driven Micellar Growth and Morphological Transitions in Tetronic Block Copolymers: Insights from Experimental and Computational Study.

The self-assembly of Tetronics® block copolymers is strongly influenced by additives that modify hydration and interfacial packing within micellar structures. Here, we investigate how octanoic acid (OA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) alter the solution behavior of Tetronics® T1304 and T1307 using a combination of cloud point (CP), relative viscosity (ηrel) small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), pyrene fluorescence, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the presence of OA, T1304 exhibits pronounced micella

Discovery of Multicomponent Invar Materials With Low Thermal Expansion, High Curie Temperature, and Superior Phase Stability Assisted by Active Learning.

Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials provide exceptional dimensional stability under temperature fluctuations, making them indispensable for high-precision instrumentation and extreme environments. However, their natural scarcity, combined with the vast compositional space in multicomponent systems, renders traditional trial-and-error approaches both time-consuming and cost-prohibitive, posing an emergent challenge for modern high-tech applications. Here, we establish a task-specific active-learning framework with empirical fine-tuning to accelerate ZTE materials' design. By mining sparse ex

Conformation-Governed Ostwald Ripening of Protein-Templated Gold Nanoclusters with Atomic Resolution.

Protein-templated gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) provide an atomically precise platform for investigating ion-protein interactions and bio-template synthesis. However, the influence of protein conformational dynamics and soft molecular confinement on NCs formation is often overlooked. Here, we address this question using lysozyme, a protein with defined cysteine quantity and conformation sensitivity as template. Evidenced by circular dichroism, zeta potential measurements, and small-angle neutron scattering, conformational changes in lysozyme, manifested as residue rearrangement, unfolding, oligom

Visualization of text on bowed sheets via High-resolution 3D-Magnetic Resonance Micro-imaging for potential reading of closed books: the proof-of-concept.

Non-invasive Magnetic Resonance Imaging on clinical MR-scanners at spatial resolution ≂1mm3 could in principle be used also for insights in the structure of valuable ancient objects like books if the spatial resolution could be improved. We demonstrate, that Magnetic-Resonance-Microscopy is even able to visualize printed letters at thickness < 30 µm on superposed paper-sheets. The physical-technical methodology is based on prototype hardware installed as insert on a human MR-scanner relying on strong magnetic and gradient-fields with sensitive radiofrequency-sensors. Solid-solid phase transitions across orientationally disordered phases: The case of tetrachloro-m-xylene.

We uncover a previously unreported solid-solid phase transition in tetrachloro-m-xylene (TCMX), a hexasubstituted benzene derivative exhibiting orientational disorder. Differential scanning calorimetry and powder x-ray diffraction reveal a weak but reproducible phase transition near 437K, corresponding to a continuous, second-order symmetry change from monoclinic P2_{1}/n (phase II) to orthorhombic Pnnm (phase I). Despite this structural reorganization, quasielastic neutron scattering demonstrates that molecular dynamics remain governed by discrete 60^{∘} in-plane reorientational jumps consist

A tumor-targeting strategy based on covalent aptamer-carborane conjugates.

The development of tumor-targeting agents is of great significance for cancer therapy. Despite the promising potential of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), efficient and selective accumulation of boron-10 agents in cancer cells remains challenging. Conjugation of carborane with tumor-targeting ligands provides an alternative strategy for selective accumulation in the vicinity of cancer cells. In this study, we designed and synthesized aptamer-carborane derivatives, named AS1411-CB conjugates, via covalent linkage between a dodecahydro-arachno-bis(acetonitrile)decaborane and the DNA aptamer

Automated Radiosynthesis of High-Molar-Activity 4-Borono-2-[18F]Fluorophenylalanine: Validation in Rodent Tumor Models and Nonhuman Primates.

The clinical efficacy of [10B]borono-l-phenylalanine ([10B]BPA)-mediated Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) relies heavily on accurate patient stratification using the companion diagnostic tracer 4-borono-2-[18F]fluorophenylalanine ([18F]FBPA). However, widespread clinical deployment is currently hindered by the limited production capacity and low molar activity of traditional electrophilic synthesis. To address this unmet need, we established a fully automated, GMP-compliant radiosynthesis of [18F]FBPA using a spirocyclic iodonium ylide (SCIDY) precursor on a commercial module. This optimiz

The first four ground-level enhancements in the 1940s: investigation, digitization and analysis of forgotten data.

Intense solar eruptions occasionally accelerate solar energetic particles (SEPs) and trigger ground-level enhancements (GLEs). Among the 77 known GLEs, the first four #1- 4, in the 1940s, took place before the advent of the standard neutron monitors (NMs) and were missing from the International GLE Database (IGLED). This data gap challenged their quantification. To overcome this difficulty, we systematically gathered, digitized and quantified contemporaneous cosmic-ray records pertaining to these GLEs. These data allow us to reconstruct the GLE temporal evolution with 1-15 minute resolutions a

Emergent Multiple Spin States From Baromagnetic Effect in Strongly Correlated Magnet Mn₃GaC.

Strongly correlated magnets, exhibiting distinctive spin properties such as spin-orbit coupling, spin polarization, and chiral spin, are regarded as the next-generation high-density magnetic storage materials in spintronics. Nevertheless, owing to intricate spin interactions, realizing controllable spin arrangement and high-density magnetic storage remains a formidable challenge. Here, controllable multiple spin states induced by the baromagnetic effect in kagome lattice magnet Mn₃GaC are first reported, achieved by manipulating spin rotation within the spin-polarized plane employing pressure.

Zeeman Split Kramers Doublets in Spin-Supersolid Candidate Na_{2}BaCo(PO_{4})_{2}.

Na_{2}BaCo(PO_{4})_{2} is a triangular antiferromagnet that displays highly efficient adiabatic demagnetization cooling [Junsen Xiang et al., Nature (London) 625, 270 (2024)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-023-06885-w] near a quantum critical point at μ_{0}H_{c}∼1.6  T, separating a low-field magnetically disordered from a high-field fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. We apply high resolution backscattering neutron spectroscopy in an applied field to study the magnetic excitations near μ_{0}H_{c}. At large fields we observe ferromagnetic fluctuations that gradually transition to being overdampe

Dynamic nanodomains dictate macroscopic properties in lead halide perovskites.

Lead halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for solar energy conversion and X-ray detection owing to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. However, the microscopic origins of their superior performance remain unclear. Here we show that low-symmetry dynamic nanodomains present in the high-symmetry average cubic phases, whose characteristics are dictated by the A-site cation, govern the macroscopic behaviour. We combine X-ray diffuse scattering, inelastic neutron spectroscopy, hyperspectral photoluminescence microscopy and machine-learning-assisted molecular dynamics simula

Development of Transferable Coarse-Grained Lipid Models with Optimized Structural and Elastic Membrane Properties.

Lipid membranes play crucial roles in cellular functions and offer diverse engineering applications. Studying their properties is critical but computationally demanding through atomistic simulations. In this work, we develop coarse-grained (CG) models for phosphocholine lipids, aimed at balancing computational efficiency and predictive accuracy with chemical and temperature transferability. We introduce chargeless CG beads with 2:1 or 3:1 mapping and optimize the force fields through a combination of systematic and accelerated approaches that integrate particle swarm optimization algorithm wit

Radiation exposure to deep brain stimulation leads during multiple cranial radiation courses: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). Concurrently, brain tumors are increasing in incidence, creating complex clinical scenarios when both conditions coexist. The safety of delivering radiation therapy to patients with active DBS devices remains poorly documented, with limited guidelines available. OBSERVATIONS: This case report describes a 69-year-old male PD patient with bilateral DBS leads who developed metastatic melanoma with brain metastases. He underwent multiple radiation treatments, including stereotactic radiosurgery and

Elucidating the porous structure of aluminum adjuvants via in-situ small-angle scattering technique.

Aluminum-based adjuvants are widely used in vaccine formulations due to their immunostimulatory properties and strong safety profile. Despite their effectiveness and safety, the exact mechanisms by which they enhance vaccine efficacy remain unclear. One proposed mechanism is that aluminum adjuvants form a depot that gradually releases antigens, thereby improving antigen uptake by antigen-presenting cells. This study investigates the porous structures of two commonly used aluminum adjuvants, aluminum hydroxide (AH) and aluminum phosphate (AP), using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small

Nuclear clustering-manifestations of non-uniformity in nuclei.

Well-developed [Formula: see text] clusters are known to exist in light [Formula: see text] nuclei, and their properties are reasonably well described with modern nuclear structure theories. However, 'modestly' developed clusters in medium to heavy nuclei remain little understood, both theoretically and experimentally. Extension of the focus to include modestly developed clusters leads us to a concept of 'generalized clusters' and 'cluster ubiquitousness'. The former includes clusters more weakly bound than an [Formula: see text] cluster, such as deuteron, triton and [Formula: see text], and e

Ligand-Directed Self-Assembly of Organic-Semiconductor/Quantum-Dot Blend Films Enables Efficient Triplet Exciton-Photon Conversion.

Blends comprising organic semiconductors and inorganic quantum dots (QDs) are relevant for many optoelectronic applications and devices. However, the individual components in organic-QD blends have a strong tendency to aggregate and phase-separate during film processing, compromising both their structural and electronic properties. Here, we demonstrate a QD surface engineering approach using electronically active, highly soluble semiconductor ligands that are matched to the organic semiconductor host material to achieve well-dispersed inorganic-organic blend films, as characterized by X-ray an

The contribution of high-LET track to DNA damage formation and cell death for Monoenergy and SOBP carbon ion irradiation.

Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) is a heavy ion charge particle therapy with 29 years of prominent use. Despite advantages like high relative biological effectiveness (RBE), improved quality of life, and reduced treatment time, challenges persist, especially regarding heavy nuclear fragments. Our research addresses these challenges in horizontal irradiation, aiming to comprehend Monoenergetic and Spread-Out Bragg peak (SOBP) carbon ion beam trajectories using cell survival analysis and visualizing biological effects through DNA damage (γ-H2AX). This reveals repair-related protein foci near the B
