Seasonal and Spatial Environmental Influence on Opisthorchis viverrini Intermediate Hosts, Abundance, and Distribution: Insights on Transmission Dynamics and Sustainable Control.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini (Ov) is a complex-life-cycle trematode affecting 10 million people in SEA (Southeast Asia). Human infection occurs when infected cyprinid fish are consumed raw or undercooked. Ov requires three hosts and presents two free-living parasitic stages. As a consequence Ov transmission and infection in intermediate and human hosts are strongly mediated by environmental factors and understanding how environmental variability influences intermediate host abundance is critical. The objectives of this study were 1) to document water parameters, intermediate hosts abunda

Reactive Oxygen Species Production Mediated by Humic-like Substances in Atmospheric Aerosols: Enhancement Effects by Pyridine, Imidazole, and Their Derivatives.

Ambient particulate matter (PM) can cause adverse health effects via their ability to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). Humic-like substances (HULIS), a complex mixture of amphiphilic organic compounds, have been demonstrated to contain the majority of redox activity in the water-extractable organic fraction of PM. Reduced organic nitrogen compounds, such as alkaloids resulting from biomass burning emissions, are among HULIS constituents. In this study, we examined the redox activities of pyridine, imidazole and their alkyl derivatives using a cell-free dithiothreitol (DTT) assay under si

Enhanced nitrogen and manganese removal in a manganese redox-driven moving bed biofilm reactor: role of extracellular polymeric substances.

In this study, the continuous flow moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was developed for conversion of nitrogen and manganese including MBBR1 (R1, with manganese redox cycling function) and MBBR2 (R2, control group). The result suggested that NH4+-N removal reached 95±2% and 78±1% by R1 and R2 with NO3--N effluent concentrations of 2.1±0.4 and 7.1±0.6 mg·L-1, and TN removal through R1 increased compared with R2. Fluorescence characteristics and concentration of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were explored, and reactive oxygen species, apoptosis and enzyme activity of biofilm including

Escalating Herbicide Loads as Underappreciated Global Disruptors of Marine Phytoplankton and Biogeochemical Cycles.

Under accelerating climate change and anthropogenic pressures, the global oceans face unprecedented threats from land-to-ocean contaminant discharge. Among these, herbicides are insidious but overlooked contaminants that endanger phytoplankton, the cornerstone of marine food webs, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration. Here, we synthesize three decades of observational and modelling data revealing sustained and widespread herbicide discharge into global coastal oceans, with productive enclosed and semienclosed seas exhibiting 4.9-fold higher concentrations than open coastal waters. Critic

Nitrate reduction and iron (II) oxidation by subsurface bacteria from the Iberian Pyritic Belt: Insights into the biogeochemical cycles in this environment.

Nitrogen and iron are central to Earth's biogeochemical cycles. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), a vast iron reservoir, hosts extremophilic microorganisms adapted to high metal and sulfur concentrations. This study investigates two isolates from the deep IPB subsurface, Citrobacter telavivensis T1.2D-1 and Stutzerimonas stutzeri T2.31D-1, evaluating their nitrate-reducing capacity and the role of iron in denitrification, with emphasis on nitrate-dependent ferrous iron oxidation (NDFO). Both species could reduce nitrate in sucrose-, lactate-, or acetate-fed medium, while their consortium enhanced

Metagenomic analysis reveals global landscape of viruses in biogeochemical cycles and microbial resistance in paddy soils and wetlands.

Paddy soils and wetlands form a critical soil-water interface that supports global crop production and biogeochemical cycling. Understanding the role of viruses in these ecosystems is vital for predicting ecosystem resilience. Considering the significance of viruses in microbial community structure and environmental pollution, we analyzed 163 metagenomes from 18 countries in Asia, Europe, America, and Australia. We characterized the global distribution and potential ecological functions of viruses through viral auxiliary metabolic genes (vAMGs), antibiotic resistance genes (vARGs), and metal(l

Thresholds and Key Environmental Drivers of Agricultural Film-Derived Microplastic Effects on Soil CO2 Emissions: Transition from Inhibition to Promotion.

Microplastics are emerging pollutants that can disrupt soil structure and key biogeochemical processes, such as carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, critical gaps remain in identifying contamination thresholds and understanding how different microplastics affect CO2 emissions through interactions with soil and microbes. To address these gaps, we conducted a microcosm experiment to evaluate CO2 emissions and their key influencing factors in soil amended with four types of agricultural film-derived microplastics (PE, PP, PVC, and PBAT) at varying doses (0.01, 0.10, 1.00, and 5.00%). Findings re

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of a harmful algal bloom-causing dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi to multiple environmental factors.

Dinoflagellates play a crucial role in marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles, yet they are increasingly affected by global environmental changes. While there is limited understanding of their response to individual stressors projected under future oceanic conditions, their response to multiple concurrent environmental stressors remains inadequately explored. This study investigated the singular and interactive effects of elevated temperature (26 °C vs. 22 °C), increased pCO2 (1000 μatm vs. 400 μatm), and a high nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio (N:P = 180:1 vs. 40:1) on the harmful algal bloom

Global antibiotic hotspots and risks: A One Health assessment.

Antibiotics are increasingly prevalent in global environments, driving antimicrobial resistance and disrupting microbial cycling. These impacts pose threats to human, animal, and environmental health. Therefore, addressing this emergent issue necessitates a One Health framework that integrates these interconnected dimensions. Here we systematically review 137 antibiotics across diverse global environmental compartments. We find that sulfonamides, macrolides, quinolones, and tetracyclines are globally ubiquitous, particularly prevalent in Asia and Africa, whereas β-lactams dominates in Europe.

Genomic and phenotypic characterization of 26 novel marine bacterial strains with relevant biogeochemical roles and widespread presence across the global ocean.

Prokaryotes dominate global oceans and shape biogeochemical cycles, yet most taxa remain uncultured and uncharacterized as of today. Here we present the characterization of 26 novel marine bacterial strains from a large isolate collection obtained from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean) microcosm experiments made in the four seasons. Morphological, cultural, biochemical, physiological, nutritional, genomic, and phylogenomic analyses were used to characterize and phylogenetically place the novel isolates. The strains represent 23 novel bacterial species and six novel genera: three novel species pert

The impact of alternating drainage and inundation cycles on geochemistry and microbiology of intact peat cores.

The rewetting of degraded peatlands has been adopted as a method to address climate change. Concerns have been raised about the effects of peat inundation and drying cycles, in more extreme climate events, on the potential release of nitrogen (N) species, in particular ammonium (NH4-N), once rewetted, as well as the physico-chemical and biological properties of the peat. This study used intact peat cores to measure the impact of two different cycles of peat inundation and drying (1 month and 2 month) over a total study duration of 56 weeks on the (1) NH4-N, nitrate-N (NO3-N) and dissolved reac

The Integrated Effect of Microbial Inoculants and Biochar Types on Soil Biological Properties, and Plant Growth of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.).

Numerous reports confirm the positive effect of biochar application on soil properties and plant development. However, the interaction between root-associated beneficial microbes and different types of biochar is not well understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the plant growth of lettuce after the application of three types of biochar in loamy, sandy soil individually and in combination with plant-beneficial microbes. Furthermore, total microbial activity in rhizosphere soil of lettuce was measured by means of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolase and enzyme activities linked

An insulin-like growth factor-binding protein in the baboon (Papio anubis) endometrium: synthesis, immunocytochemical localization, and hormonal regulation.

The major secretory product of the baboon and human decidua during pregnancy is an insulin-like growth factor-binding protein (IGF-BP). This study was designed to determine the site and regulation of synthesis of this protein in the nonpregnant baboon based on our previous findings that this molecule is biochemically and immunologically similar in the two species during pregnancy. Endometrial tissue was obtained from cycling baboons and steroid-treated ovariectomized animals. Portions of the tissue were fixed for immunocytochemical analysis, cultured in the presence or absence of cyclohexamide

Severity of ocean acidification following the end-Cretaceous asteroid impact.

Most paleo-episodes of ocean acidification (OA) were either too slow or too small to be instructive in predicting near-future impacts. The end-Cretaceous event (66 Mya) is intriguing in this regard, both because of its rapid onset and also because many pelagic calcifying species (including 100% of ammonites and more than 90% of calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera) went extinct at this time. Here we evaluate whether extinction-level OA could feasibly have been produced by the asteroid impact. Carbon cycle box models were used to estimate OA consequences of (i) vaporization of up to 60 × 1

Air Pollution and Climate Regulate the Large-Scale Pattern of Foliar Nitrogen Uptake by Urban Street Trees.

Urbanisation has fundamentally altered terrestrial nitrogen (N) cycling and created N-enriched hotspots where street trees serve as essential green infrastructures. These street trees live in a distinctive environment with high-level reactive N emissions and blocked soil N cycling, potentially relying on direct N uptake via stomata as an important N source. However, the spatial pattern and primary drivers governing this non-root N uptake across broad climatic gradients remain elusive. Based on an analysis of leaf-soil difference in stable isotope ratios (∆ δ15N, i.e., foliar δ15N-topsoil δ15N)

Combined pretreatment of biogas slurry immersion followed by freeze-thaw cycle for methane production enhancement of rice straw.

The challenge associated with agricultural straw pretreatment before anaerobic digestion (AD) lies in overcoming biomass recalcitrance at a low cost while minimizing the wastewater that requires additional purification. Biogas slurry from AD itself, rich in ammonia nitrogen and microorganisms, can pretreat straw instead of ammonia reagents or microbial agents. This study explored a synergistic pretreatment approach, particularly relevant in cold regions that offer natural cold resources, involving the immersion of straw in biogas slurry, followed by freeze-thaw cycles. Research findings indica

Brain imaging as a prognostic biomarker in urea cycle disorders.

The Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) represent a group of rare inborn errors of metabolism that have impaired nitrogen handling from the breakdown of protein, with ensuing acute episodic or chronic hyperammonemia and neurotoxicity. Although advances in newborn screening, molecular diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions have improved survival, neurocognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric sequelae remain prevalent in those with both neonatal onset as well as later onset partial deficiencies. The mechanisms of brain injury in UCDs are complex and multifactorial, and in some cases are not fully known.

Hydraulic residence time thresholds and seasonal regimes governing DOM transformation in upper Yangtze River cascading reservoirs.

The molecular characteristics and biogeochemical transformations of riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) have a significant impact on carbon cycling in freshwater ecosystems. Although individual dams influence DOM dynamics, the cumulative effects of sequential reservoir systems remain unclear. This study investigates five consecutive reservoirs along the Yangtze River through seasonal sampling (2021-2022). We introduce the concept of cumulative hydraulic residence time (cHRT), which represents the sequential water retention in a low-interference cascade reservoir. Our findings demonstrate t
