A national survey of iodine nutrition in children aged 3-6 years in China and its relationship with children's physical growth.

Iodine, an essential trace element for the human body, plays a pivotal role in sustaining health. Malnutrition has emerged as a pressing public health concern, posing a significant threat to human well-being. Iodine deficiency poses a substantial threat to the development of children, potentially leading to neurological developmental disorders and mental retardation. Conversely, excessive iodine intake can result in structural and functional abnormalities in the thyroid gland. In this study, we selected children aged 3-6 years through a stratified cluster sampling approach in six regions acros

A Case Report of Cardiac Failure in a Patient on Teduglutide for High-Output Ileostomy Stoma.

A high volume of ileostomy output in patients with extensive bowel resection can be hard to manage. This leads to extensive loss of fluids and electrolytes along with malabsorption. Medications have traditionally controlled it by delaying intestinal transit and decreasing intestinal and gastric secretion using opiates, loperamide, diphenoxylate, omeprazole, somatostatin, and octreotide. However, many patients depend on parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte infusions, even with optimal drug therapy. Despite the best possible care, they may develop renal failure. Teduglutide is a glucag

The Role of Nutrition and Physical Activity as Trigger Factors of Paralytic Attacks in Primary Periodic Paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Primary periodic paralysis (PPP) are rare inherited neuromuscular disorders including Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP), Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HyperPP) and Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) characterised by attacks of weakness or paralysis of skeletal muscles. Limited effective pharmacological treatments are available, and avoidance of lifestyle related triggers seems important. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to search and assess the scientific literature for information on trigger factors related to nutrition and physical activity in PPP. METHODS: We searched Ovid Medline a

Determining energy requirement and evaluating energy expenditure in neurological diseases.

Objectives: It has been reported that in most neurological patients, resting energy expenditure due to hypermetabolism is increased. Physical activity, which is another component of energy expenditure, varies depending on the course of the disease. Different mechanisms are used to explain changes in energy expenditure in this population. Pathological problems of centers that regulate energy balance in the brain, endocrine and metabolic dysfunction, mitochondrial damage, autonomic dysfunction and inflammatory anomalies are thought to be at the root of this situation. In this review study, studi

Enteral nutrition in dementia: a systematic review.

The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the role of enteral nutrition in dementia. The prevalence of dementia is predicted to rise worldwide partly due to an aging population. People with dementia may experience both cognitive and physical complications that impact on their nutritional intake. Malnutrition and weight loss in dementia correlates with cognitive decline and the progress of the disease. An intervention for long term eating difficulties is the provision of enteral nutrition through a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy tube to improve both nutritional parameters and qualit

Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa: causal theories and treatment.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders characterized by gross disturbances in eating behavior. Recently these disorders have reached near-epidemic proportions, affecting approximately 1.2 million adolescent and young adult females in the United States. The incidence in males is considerably less, and the prevalence rate has remained fixed at 5 percent during the last five years. The estimates of mortality range between 1 and 15 percent and are equally divided between medical complications (electrolyte disturbance, acute kidney failure, cardiac complications) and suicide. Wernicke Encephalopathy following Gastric Bypass: A Case Report.

Bariatric surgery is used as a treatment for morbid obesity and often results in rapid weight loss. This procedure has been associated with postoperative nutritional deficiencies. Neurological complications due to nutritional deficiencies include Wernicke encephalopathy, a disorder that affects the central and peripheral nervous system due to thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Wernicke encephalopathy can lead to irreversible consequences if not treated early. Here, we present a case of a 40-year-old woman that developed Wernicke encephalopathy 2 months after gastric bypass surgery, with additio

A prospective, randomized clinical study of adjunctive peripheral parenteral nutrition in adult subacute care patients.

BACKGROUND: A number of frail, older, undernourished patients cannot maintain adequate oral intake to meet protein-calorie needs after an illness, even when high-density nutritional supplements are added. Tolerance to enteral nutrition by gastric tube is poor in this group of patients. Peripheral parenteral nutrition is an effective method of administering nutritional support to patients with mild to moderate nutritional deficiencies who are unable to receive enteral nutrition or for whom enteral nutrition alone cannot meet energy needs. However, no data exists for the use of peripheral parent

Perioperative nutrition support for patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery: critical analysis and recommendations.

There is a high incidence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. Malnutrition is clearly associated with increased morbidity and mortality after major gastrointestinal surgery. The efficacy of perioperative nutrition support to reduce surgical complications and mortality significantly has been an area of active clinical investigation over the past three decades. From multiple prospective, randomized trials, significant benefit from perioperative nutritional support has been demonstrated in severely malnourished patients undergoing major surgery. Results o

Sleep disorders accelerate biological aging through depressive symptoms: Evidence from NHANES.

This study investigates the impact of sleep disorders on biological aging, examining the mediating role of depressive symptoms and the moderating effect of a healthy lifestyle. Data were drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2005-2014, with a sample of 18,862 participants aged 20-79. Biological aging was assessed using the Klemera-Doubal method (KDM-BA), depressive symptoms were measured with the PHQ-9 scale, and lifestyle factors were evaluated based on smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity. Results indicate that sleep disorders s

The impact of olfactory loss on quality of life: a 2025 review.

For a long time, the sense of smell was considered the neglected stepbrother of human sensory abilities, and the loss of smell has received little attention. This perception changed dramatically with the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to millions of people losing their sense of smell, and some never recovering. COVID-19 not only increased general awareness of olfactory disorders but also accelerated research into the role of smell in nonverbal communication and mental health. This review aims to summarize the literature on the impact of olfactory disorders on quality of life. Starting from the f

Mood disorders and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

The association between gluten related disorders and psychiatric diseases has been firmly demonstrated. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is a syndrome diagnosed in patients responsive to gluten-free diet after ruling out celiac disease and wheat allergy. The pathogenesis of neuro-psychiatric disorders in NCGS is unclear. An association between gluten and schizophrenia was described for the first time in 1950 by Bender et al. In the 1950's, Dicke noted that gluten-free diet improved mood in celiac patients. In 1970, Goldberg et al., in a study of 80 celiac patients, found that 34% of them s

Obstetric and gynecologic problems associated with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This article summarizes the literature on obstetric and gynecologic complications associated with eating disorders. METHOD: We performed a comprehensive search of the current literature on obstetric and gynecologic complications associated with eating disorders using PubMed. More recent randomized-controlled trials and larger data sets received priority. We also chose those that we felt would be the most relevant to providers. RESULTS: Common obstetric and gynecologic complications for women with eating disorders include infertility, unplanned pregnancy, miscarriage, poor nutritio

The Impact of Nutritional Therapy on Gastrointestinal Motility in Older Adults.

Japan is becoming a superaged society, and nutrition therapy for the elderly population is very important. Elderly individuals often have multiple diseases and are prone to malnutrition. Furthermore, functional constipation, diarrhoea, faecal incontinence, etc., may occur despite no organic abnormality of digestive tract function. Due to these disabilities, the resulting malnutrition, and the slow recovery, it is often difficult for elderly individuals to reintegrate into society. Secondary or incorrect nutritional management increases complications, decreases physical function and worsens the

Surviving but not quite thriving: anthropometric survey of children aged 6 to 59 months in a rural Western Uganda district.

Located in Western Uganda, Bundibugyo District has enjoyed nearly a decade of relative political stability. However, the current nutritional status of young children is not known. A survey conducted in 1999 assessed the prevalence of global malnutrition, but not stunting. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of global malnutrition and stunting in three of the 10 subcounties in Bundibugyo District, and to describe efforts to address malnutrition in Bundibugyo. An anthropometric survey of children aged 6 to 59 months was conducted, informed by guidelines for two-stage cluster

Enteral Nutrition Delivery Is Overestimated in Provider Documentation.

Burn-injured patients have the highest metabolic demand of all critically ill patients and are vulnerable to complications of malnutrition. Many burn centers have challenges in achieving prescribed rates of nutrition, despite aggressive algorithms. One possible reason for the discrepancy is inaccurate documentation of volumes. This is a retrospective review of patients requiring tube feeding admitted to a regional burn center between June and August 2015. Demographics were abstracted including gender, type of injury, TBSA, and age. The total feeding volume was recorded from the feeding pump ev

Protein and energy: recommended intake and nutrient supplementation in chronic dialysis patients.

Nutritional status is an important predictor of clinical outcome in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, especially in patients on chronic hemodialysis. Uremic malnutrition is strongly associated with increased risk of death and hospitalization events in this patient population, and decreased muscle mass is the most significant predictor of these outcomes. Several factors that influence protein metabolism predispose chronic hemodialysis patients to increased catabolism and loss of lean body mass. The available evidence suggests that low protein and energy intake associated with advanced ur

Nutritional status of infants and young children and characteristics of their diets.

Adoption of the recommended breast-feeding and complementary feeding behaviors and access to the appropriate quality and quantity of foods are essential components of optimal nutrition for infants and young children between ages 6 and 24 mo. Iron, zinc and vitamin B-6 are deficient in complementary food diets in Bangladesh, Ghana, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. Low intakes of iron are consistent with a high prevalence of anemia seen in this age group. The adequacy of observed intakes for calcium, vitamin A, thiamin, folate and vitamin C depends on the age range in question and the set of requirem

Nutrient intake of highly competitive male and female collegiate karate players.

Nutrient intake of 29 male (M Group) and 16 female (F Group) highly competitive collegiate karate players were compared. The results were also compared with the daily energy expenditure (DEE), Japanese recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) or adequate dietary intakes (ADIs). Dietary information was collected using a 3-weekday diet record. Although the M Group showed significantly higher mean %RDAs or %ADIs in iron, vitamin B1, phosphorus, magnesium, and sodium than the F Group, many of the mean %RDAs or %ADIs were below RDAs or ADIs in both groups. The subjects who skipped meals tended to show
