Agents of change: The role of healthcare workers in the prevention of nosocomial and occupational tuberculosis.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) play a central role in global tuberculosis (TB) elimination efforts but their contributions are undermined by occupational TB. HCWs have higher rates of latent and active TB than the general population due to persistent occupational TB exposure, particularly in settings where there is a high prevalence of undiagnosed TB in healthcare facilities and TB infection control (TB-IC) programmes are absent or poorly implemented. Occupational health programmes in high TB burden settings are often weak or non-existent and thus data that record the extent of the increased risk o…

Health-Related Exposures and Conditions among US Fishermen.

Commercial fishing is a high-risk occupation, yet there is a lack of surveillance documenting health conditions, health behaviors, and health care coverage among US fishermen. We used publicly available data sources to identify exposures and health outcomes common among fishermen. We utilized the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-Worker Health Charts to estimate the prevalence of general exposures, psychosocial exposures, health behaviors, and health conditions from the national surveys National Health Interview Survey - Occupational Health Supplement (NHIS-OHS, 2015) and B…

Beyond Exposure: A Comprehensive Vision for Healthcare Worker Protection.

The protection of healthcare workers (HCWs) requires an integrated approach addressing both traditional occupational hazards and psychosocial challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that HCW safety cannot rely solely on infection prevention but must also consider work-related stress, burnout, and organisational determinants of well-being. Contact tracing supported the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, while validated tools such as the Mini-Z questionnaire enabled the assessment of stress and burnout. Evidence highlights the association between occupational stress and poorer health-

Generic and Disease-Specific Themes in Occupational Reflections of Patients in Cardiac, Cancer and Orthopedic Rehabilitation: An Interview Study.

PURPOSE: To explore occupational perspectives of patients with elevated risk of non-return to work (RTW) in cardiac, cancer, and orthopedic rehabilitation. What themes are relevant when patients in medical rehabilitation reflect on their occupational future, and to what extent are identified themes specific to medical specialty? METHODS: Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 51 patients (63% female, median age 55) of elevated risk of non-RTW in post-acute rehabilitation after hospital stay for an acute cardiac (n = 20), cancer (n = 15), or orthopedic disease (n = 16). Configurational paths to turnover intention among primary public health workers in Liaoning Province, China: a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: A stable public health workforce plays an indispensable role in the realization of the goal of health for all. However, there is an exodus of public health workers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Given the limited evidence on the mechanisms shaping turnover intention (TI) among public health workers, the study aims to investigate the triggering mechanisms of high and low turnover intention by combining job demands, job resources, and personal resources through a set theory perspective based on the Job-Demand-Resources (JD-R) model. METHODS: The cross-sec

Prevalence and associated factors of occupational injuries among municipal solid waste collectors in four zones of Amhara region, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Refuse collectors are at a high risk for fatal and non-fatal occupational accidents. This is more intensified in developing countries, like Ethiopia, due to physically demanding nature of the job. However, information on occupational injuries and related factors are almost non-existent in Ethiopia. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of occupational injuries and its associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among municipal solid waste collectors in four zones of Amhara region from February to May 2015. Computer generated simple random

The impact of work-family conflict on the mental health of female employees in the financial sector of China: a cross-sectional study.

Mental health among female financial employees is a critical occupational concern, yet the role of work-family conflict in this high-pressure field remains underexplored. This study assesses the mental health status of 2,342 female employees in China's financial sector and examines the specific impact of work-family conflict. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Perceived Stress Scale, while work-family conflict was measured with the Work-Family Conflict Scale. Results revealed elevated prevalence rates: depre

Policy evaluation: better living through research.

Public health scientists have produced valuable research about the epidemiology of occupational hazards, their measurement, and engineering controls. Still, many firms do not apply available knowledge to eliminate workplace hazards. Occupational safety and health policy research helps to bridge the gap between current scientific understanding and effective public policies. It focuses on four areas: (1) primary prevention policies, including standards focusing on controlling specific hazards, standards requiring health and safety programs, surveillance, education and training, targeting of enfo

Review of epidemiological studies on the occupational risk of tuberculosis in low-incidence areas.

This review summarizes the epidemiological evidence for occupationally acquired tuberculosis and considers the implications for the prevention of tuberculosis. The relevant epidemiological studies were identified on the basis of the Medline data bank, starting with the year 1966. The evaluation of occupational groups with an elevated tuberculosis risk is exclusively based on epidemiologic studies of good or acceptable quality, applying clearly defined criteria of methodological quality. In summary, the available epidemiological evidence suggests that the risk of tuberculosis is elevated in the

Occupational post-traumatic stress disorder: an updated systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Although numerous studies on occupational post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been conducted prior to the 1950-2010 seminal systematic review by Skogstad et al., the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of this disorder following traumatic events in occupational settings remain unclear. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by reviewing the literature published after 2010. METHODS: We reviewed literature from databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar using PRISMA guidelines to identify studies that address occupational PTSD and examined the status (prevalence or i

The prevalence and correlates of occupational injuries in small-scale manufacturing enterprises.

Workers involved in small-scale manufacturing businesses are known to comprise a high-risk population for occupational injury. The present study investigated the prevalence and correlates of occupational injury in this population. A self-administered questionnaire that solicited answers about occupational information including injury, demographic characteristics, health conditions and lifestyle factors was collected from a sample of 1,298 workers in 228 small-scale manufacturing enterprises (defined as fewer than 50 workers) aged 16-78 (mean 46) yr in Yashio city, Saitama, Japan (response rate

Risk reduction through testing, screening and infection control precautions--with special emphasis on needlestick injuries.

Transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose substantial risks to institutional healthcare employees working with blood. While the risk of contracting hepatitis B in the hospital setting is much greater than the probability of acquiring HIV, the cost of treating the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)--if it develops--is much greater in both dollars and human suffering. In addition to the risks posed by the presence of HIV infection in the hospital increase daily. By the end of 1990, one of every 14 hospitalized patients will be an HIV carrier.
