The Jackson-Morton 1846 patent for surgical insensibility by means of sulphuric ether states that opiates can be added to the ether and co-administered by inhalation. The erroneous concept that ether could carry opiates in its vapor phase at room temperature was proposed in Boston in 1846 by Elton Romeo Smilie (1819-1889), who believed that the opiates were more important than the ether vehicle.

Previous report of the vast effectiveness of opium derivatives in cancer therapy is leading us to see possible effects of these derivatives on cancer stem cells in order to find new agent for cancer therapy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) count of cells collected from the normal buccal mucosa of cigarette smokers, opium addicts and nonsmokers.
STUDY DESIGN: Exfoliative cytologic smears of buccal mucosa from 25 smokers, 25 addicts and 25 nonsmokers were stained for AgNORs according to the Ploton's method. The AgNOR count was performed on 100 cells. These AgNOR counts were compared and analyzed using the SPSS 13 program (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.) and one-way ANOVA test.

The present study evaluates the effect of oral administration of papaverine at differential dosing regimens (100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw) on the hepatic and pulmonary glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and glutathione content (GSH) in male Wistar rats. Papaverine treatment caused a pronounced increase in GST activity and GSH content at the higher dosing level in the rat liver and lung. We conclude that papaverine, can possibly act as a chemopreventive agent against chemical carcinogenesis.

The analysis of literature data on production of isoquinoline alkaloids by Papaver somniferum L. plants and cell cultures has been made. The relationship of morphinane alkaloids biosynthesis with the processes of tissue and cell differentiation are discussed. The information on enzymes and pathways of regulation of morphine and sanguinarine biosynthesis are presented. The data on sanguinarine and morphine physiological role are analyzed.
