The herbal remedy, ginseng, has recently been demonstrated to possess neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties, which may be useful in preventing various forms of neuronal cell loss including the nigrostriatal degeneration seen in Parkinson's disease (PD). In these studies, we examine the potential neuroprotective actions of the ginseng extract, G115, in two rodent models of PD. Animals received oral administration of G115 prior to and/or following exposure to the parkinsonism-inducing neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), in mice, or its toxic metabolite, 1-methy

BACKGROUND: Promoting damaged intestinal mucosal repair and restoring epithelial barrier function are critical strategies for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). Interleukin-22 (IL-22), a key cytokine for intestinal epithelial homeostasis, is mainly secreted by group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s). ILC3s exhibit substantial plasticity: NCR⁻ILC3 preferentially secrete IL-17A, whereas NCR⁺ILC3 primarily produce IL-22; under inflammatory conditions, NCR⁺ILC3 and ILC1 can undergo reciprocal conversion. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signaling is involved in regulating ILC3 subset balance and

The oxidative damage to vascular endothelial cells induced by smoking represents a significant pathogenic factor in the development of atherosclerosis. In the present study, we isolated ginseng oligopeptide extract (GOE), which emerges as a promising candidate for protecting human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) from nicotine-induced oxidative stress. The underlying mechanisms were also explored. The GOE effectively reversed the decline in cell viability and protected HAECs from nicotine-induced oxidative damage by inhibiting the overproduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) w

Herb pairs are the unique combinations of two relatively fixed herbs, intrinsically convey the basic idea of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions. The compatibility of Radix ginseng and Schisandra chinensis has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating Alzheimer's disease for many years. However, there are few studies on Radix ginseng-Schisandra chinensis herb pair, and the underlying action mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the mechanism of Radix ginseng-Schisandra chinensis herb pair on Alzheimer's disease was investigated by using the mass spectrometry-based urin

Ginseng is a well-established functional food for brain health. However, its active ingredients have not yet been identified. Gintonin is a promising compound isolated from white/red ginseng. Its lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is an exogenous G protein-coupled LPA receptor (LPAR) agonist. Korean red ginseng marc (KRGM) is a by-product after KRG extractions. In a previous study, we demonstrated that KRGM-derived gintonin (KRGM-G) contains LPA C[Formula: see text], a major functional component of both white and red ginseng. [Formula: see text] transgenic mice and SH-SY5Y cells were used to determin

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a hazardous residue in sulfur-fumigated herbs. Standards limiting SO2 content have been adopted worldwide for quality control of sulfur-fumigated herbs, and herbs with less SO2 are believed to be better. However, the standards are based only on the safe dose of SO2 and may not characterize changes in herbal quality, thereby the efficacy and toxicity, resulting from sulfur fumigation. To confirm this, here the correlation of residual SO2 content with the quality/efficacy/toxicity of sulfur-fumigated herb was investigated, and ginseng was selected as a pilot study object.

Comprehensive quality control is essential for ensuring the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). However, current quality control methods of TCMs primarily focus on quantifiable indicators, neglect the variation of pharmacodynamic constituents across disease progression. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive pathogenesis-oriented quality control framework for TCMs, using Radix ginseng-Schisandra chinensis (R-S) herb pair intervention in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression as an example. A rat model of "hepatitis-cirrhosis-HCC-advanced HCC" was established t

BACKGROUND: Acute cold exposure (ACE) is a significant environmental stressor that markedly increases the risk of cardiovascular complications; however, the precise mechanisms underlying the resultant myocardial injury remain incompletely understood. Ginsenoside Rg2 (Rg2), a key bioactive component of Panax ginseng, confers significant cardioprotective benefits. Despite this, the therapeutic potential and specific mechanisms of Rg2 in attenuating acute cold exposure/rewarming (ACE/R)-induced myocardial injury require further clarification.
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to clarify t…

Red ginseng is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that has long been used to treat diabetes, and its blood sugar-lowering activity has been confirmed. However, the mechanism of action of red ginseng on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at the metabolic level is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of red ginseng extract in the treatment of T2DM rats based on untargeted metabolomics. The rat model of T2DM was induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) combined with streptozotocin (STZ), and serum samples were collected after four weeks of treatment. The ultra-high-perfor

Red ginseng is well known for its angiogenic effects and its effect of increasing expression of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), but little experimental evidence has been published. In this study, we examined the effect of red ginseng using an ischemic flap model. Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups of 10. One group drank red ginseng solution from 7 days prior to surgery to 7 days after, whereas the other group drank distilled water. We created a local flap on the back of each rat. We analyzed the surviving area of the flap for 10 days after surgery and mea

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Natural phytochemicals (NPs) derived from traditional medicinal plants, such as flavonoids from Glycyrrhiza uralensis, terpenoids from Salvia miltiorrhiza, and saponins from Panax ginseng, have been extensively used in ethnopharmacological practices across Asia for treating cardiovascular disorders. These include symptom complexes such as "xiongbi" (chest discomfort) and "xinji" (palpitations), which are analogous to modern doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC). Despite their historical use, the cardioprotective efficacy of these NPs against DIC and their ali…

Ischemic stroke (IS) remains one of the most serious threats to human life. Early blood-brain barrier damage (BBB) is the cause of parenchymal cell damage. Repair of the structure and function of the BBB is beneficial for the treatment of IS. The traditional prescription ginseng aconitum decoction (GAD) has a long history in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, however, the effect of GAD on the BBB disruption and underlying mechanisms remains largely unknown. To address these issues, in vitro models of BBB were established with brain endothelial cells (bEnd.3). We foun
