The Parasite Paradox: Therapeutic Insights from Parasite-Host Interactions - A Focus on Beneficial Physiological Modulations.

A compelling and paradoxical body of evidence challenges the traditional view of parasites solely as pathogens. This narrative review synthesizes a growing literature suggesting that specific, chronic parasitic infections-particularly by helminths, but also certain protozoa-can, under precise ecological conditions, confer a spectrum of protective and ameliorative effects on the host. We comprehensively detail these effects across two interconnected domains. First, we examine organ-specific immunomodulation, focusing on the attenuation of inflammatory and autoimmune pathologies within the cardi…

Visual Detection of Malaria Parasite-Parasitized Erythroblasts in Peripheral Blood via Immunization-Based Model.

BACKGROUND: Erythroblasts have recently been identified as host cells for malarial parasites, revealing a previously underappreciated host-parasite interaction. However, their extremely low abundance in peripheral blood has hindered progress, especially in elucidating the biological significance of parasitized erythroblasts (pEBs) in vivo. METHODS: Here, we visualized pEBs in a murine model and established a method to increase their number in peripheral blood by immunizing mice with live Plasmodium yoelii 17XNL, followed by challenge with P. berghei ANKA. RESULTS: Immunized mice were protect…

Host resources and parasite traits interact to determine the optimal combination of host parasite-mitigation strategies.

Organisms have evolved diverse strategies to manage parasite infections. Broadly, hosts may avoid infection by altering behaviour, resist infection by targeting parasites or tolerate infection by repairing associated damage. The effectiveness of a strategy depends on interactions between, for example, resource availability, parasite traits (virulence, life-history) and the host itself (nutritional status, immunopathology). To understand how these factors shape host parasite-mitigation strategies, we developed a mathematical model of within-host, parasite-immune dynamics in the context of helmi…

Oxidative Stress in Parasitic Diseases-Reactive Oxygen Species as Mediators of Interactions between the Host and the Parasites.

Oxidative stress plays a significant role in the development and course of parasitic infections, both in the attacked host organism and the … about 1 million deaths reported annually. In Europe and Poland, the essential problem is intestinal parasites. Due to a parasitic infection, the concentration of antioxidants in the host decreases, and the concentration of products of cellular components oxidation increases. In response to the increased number of reactive oxygen species attacking it, the pa …

Unveiling novel RNA viruses in trematodes parasitizing common periwinkle: Implications for host-parasite interactions.

This study characterized novel RNA viruses, parasites of parasites, or hyperparasites identified during transcriptomic analyses of two trematode species, Cryptocotyle lingua and Himasthla elongata, infecting a sea snail, Littorina littorea. According to the viral genome structures and phylogenetic analysis, Cryptolin alternavirus (ClRNAV1), Cryptolin calicivirus (ClRNAV2) and Himastelon rhabdovirus 1 (HeRNAV1) were respectively classified within the families Alternaviridae, Caliciviridae and Rhabdoviridae. They replicate species-specifically in two studied phases of trematode live cycle: intra…

Parasitism in heterogeneous landscapes: Association between conserved habitats and gastrointestinal parasites in populations of wild mammals.

Parasites constitute essential elements of biodiversity, playing fundamental roles for the functioning and configuration of any ecosystem. The continuous and accelerated human expansion into previously pristine territories is changing landscape structure and climatic regimes that could alter host - parasite dynamics. We explore the influence of landscape structure and habitat quality on gastrointestinal parasites in several species of mammals inhabiting remnants of tall evergreen forest within a matrix of anthropic vegetation. Here, we record 32 taxa of gastrointestinal parasites with nematode…

High Parasitic Contamination of Soil Samples in the North of Iran: A Potential Risk of Parasitic Infection for Tourists.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted parasites (STPs) are significant intestinal parasites that infect humans and animals and impose considerable burdens on human society and animal husbandry industries. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of parasitic elements of soil samples collected from the north of Iran. METHODS: A total of 256 soil samples were collected from public parks, public places, vegetable gardens, sand heaps, and shadow areas near houses in the north of Iran and examined using the sucrose flotation method. RESULTS: Out of 256 examined samples, 131 (51.2%) s…

Two novel venom proteins underlie divergent parasitic strategies between a generalist and a specialist parasite.

Parasitoids are ubiquitous in natural ecosystems. Parasitic strategies are highly diverse among parasitoid species, yet their underlying genetic bases are poorly understood. Here, we focus on the divergent adaptation of a specialist and a generalist drosophilid parasitoids. We find that a novel protein (Lar) enables active immune suppression by lysing the host lymph glands, eventually leading to successful parasitism by the generalist. Meanwhile, another novel protein (Warm) contributes to a passive strategy by attaching the laid eggs to the gut and other organs of the host, leading to incompl

Anti-parasitic effects and toxicity of formalin on the parasite Mesanophrys sp. of the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus.

In aquaculture of the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus, massive deaths have been recorded in the winter months due to infection with a … ear chromatin became condensed and agglutinated. Small holes and bubbles appeared on surface of the parasites. In an in vivo trial, formalin was applied prior to Mesanophrys sp. artificial infection as prophylaxis to P. trituberculatus. The results showed that formalin prophylactic treatment effectively prevented P. trituberculatus from Mesanophrys sp. infe …

Parasitic disease in the pediatric intensive care unit - A review of severe manifestations of pediatric parasitic disease.

Parasitic diseases, previously thought to be the domain of developing nations only, are being increasingly recognized as a significant source of morbidity/mortality in developed and developing nations alike. While many parasites cause long-term low-level disease, some parasitic diseases can have severe manifestations necessitating intensive care unit admission. In this review, we focus on severe malaria (including cerebral malaria), neurocysticercosis, Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome, American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease), baylisascariasis and amoebic meningoencephalitis.

Bilateral Ovarian Teratoma: One Parasitic Twisted In-situ and Another Parasitic at the Hepato Renal Space.

Parasitic ovarian dermoid cysts are very rare. We report a rare case of bilateral ovarian dermoid cysts with parasitic teratoma at the hepato renal space measuring 11x11x6 cm while the other was twisted measuring 10x6x5 cm.Right ovary and tube were absent. The mass found at the hepato renal space was surrounded by and adherent to the omentum with viable tubal fimbria like structure at upper surface. Histopathologically both masses were confirmed as mature ovarian teratoma. The etiology of parasitic teratoma would be due to torsion followed by autoamputation and reimplantation of the right ovar

Spatial variation in gender-biased parasitism: host-related, parasite-related and environment-related effects.

The gender-biased pattern of parasite infestation has been shown to be a complicated phenomenon that cannot be explained by a single mechanism but rather involves several different mechanisms. We asked what are the factors that affect the manifestation and extent of gender-biased parasitism and studied the relationship between parasite-related (mean abundance, mean species richness and total species richness of all parasites), host-related (rodent density and proportion of reproductive males and females both separately and together) and environment-related (mean daily maximal and minimal tempe…
