[A significance of measurement of breathing nervous regulation, respiratory resistance and spirometry in clinical toxicology - retrospective review].

UNLABELLED: The exogenous central nervous system depressants such opioides, alcohol and carbon monoxide may affect nervous respiratory regulation and lead to disturbances in respiratory system efficiency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the breathing nervous regulation and ventilatory efficiency in patients treated in Clinical Toxicology, UJCM in Krakow in the period 1994- 2000. METHODS: There were 385 persons under examination: 144 alcohol abusers and 70 opiate abusers (group I), 91 persons treated because of acute carbon monoxide poisoning (group II) and 80 healthy persons - control g

Normalization of Elevated Blood Pressure After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion.

Perioperative change to the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in spine surgery is an uncommon occurrence but has a wide range of possible presentations including blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rate variability changes collectively referred to as dysreflexia. Increased sympathetic tone and decreased vagal output are believed to be the underlying causes of these autonomic manifestations and pose an important question as to effective treatment of these dysfunctions. Spinal nerve root decompression has shown to be a valuable tool in normalizing autonomic tone by increasing parasympathetic outp

Non-pharmacological Modulation of the Autonomic Nervous System for Heart Failure Treatment: Where do We Stand?

INTRODUCTION: An imbalance in the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is a central pathophysiologic mechanism in Heart Failure (HF) and has been a principal target of treatment in these patients. Traditional pharmacologic agents do not provide specific modulation of discrete arms of the ANS, while side effects may lead to poor tolerance. Technological advances have provided a series of invasive methods that may provide a focused effect on the ANS in selected patient groups. Renal denervation, initially targeted for patients with resistant hypertension, has given positive preliminary results in term

The Cardiac Rhythm of the Unconscious in a Case of Panic Disorder.

The field of psychodynamic psychotherapy would benefit from a comprehensive model that integrates its constructs with neurobiology. Research on the autonomic nervous system activity during the psychotherapeutic process is necessary because it is key in affective experiences and defensive behavior. The current case study reports physiological findings on heart rate dynamics in a patient suffering from panic disorder during two therapeutic sessions in which we used Davanloo's Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy. We looked at various metrics of heart rate variability during the therapeutic

Nitrazepam-induced cricopharyngeal dysphagia, abnormal esophageal peristalsis and associated bronchospasm: probable cause of nitrazepam-related sudden death.

Nitrazepam was used in the treatment of resistant myoclonic epilepsy in 38 children. After the occurrence of nitrazepam-associated swallowing incoordination, high-peaked esophageal peristalsis and related bronchospasm in one patient, we initiated a prospective study of esophageal manometry using a station pull-through technique with a pediatric 4-channel continuous perfusing system. Three more patients were found to have delayed cricopharyngeal relaxation and high-peaked esophageal peristaltic waves. The initial patient developed severe respiratory distress and bronchospasm necessitating venti

Autonomic effects on R-R variations of the heart rate in the squirrel monkey: an indicator of autonomic imbalance in conflict sickness.

To assess the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to beat-to-beat (R-R interval) variations in the squirrel monkey, heart rate was analyzed after atropine, propranolol, carbachol, or isoproterenol administration, using a computer analyzing system. Heart rate variations were expressed as coefficient of variance (CV) of mean R-R interval. CV of R-R interval clearly was reduced by atropine but not by propranolol, indicating that the effect could be mediated through the parasympathetic nerve. CV of R-R interval was measured also under vestibulo-visual conflict (VVC) situation in pit

Impaired blood pressure response to norepinephrine in a case of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus--improvement with a beta-adrenergic antagonist.

A case of juvenile-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in a 30-year-old male patient is reported. He was admitted to the hospital beca … em in response to sympathomimetic drugs while the release of catecholamines and the function of the parasympathetic nervous system appears to be intact. Treatment with beta-blocking agents such as propranolol as an adjunct to sympathomimetics seems to be a promising approach which might deserve further consideration in similar cases.

Autonomic response to the Adult Attachment Projective in anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Cardiovascular complications associated with anorexia nervosa (AN) are well recognized. Whether a wide array of studies has investigated autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning at rest in people with AN, few is yet known on their reactivity ability during stress conditions. The aim of the current study is testing ANS reactivity to a stressful task activating attachment system among adolescents with AN. METHODS: Heart rate (HR) and its variability, as derived by high-frequency-heart rate variability (HF-HRV), were continuously assessed while 13 AN patients and 12 healthy controls (

Odors generated from the Maillard reaction affect autonomic nervous activity and decrease blood pressure through the olfactory system.

BACKGROUND: Systolic blood pressure (SBP) of rats decreases significantly following exposure to the odor generated from the Maillard reaction of protein digests with xylose. This study identified active odorants that affect blood pressure and demonstrated the mechanism of action. RESULTS: Among the four potent odorants that contribute most to the odor of the Maillard reaction sample, 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone (DMHF) and 5-methyl-2-pyrazinemethanol (MPM) decreased SBP significantly. The earliest decrease in blood pressure was observed 5 min after exposure to DMHF. Application of zi

Heart rate variability in patients with atrial septal defect and healthy children.

OBJECTIVE: Heart rate variability (HRV) measures are altered in various cardiac and non-cardiac situations in children. The autonomic nervous system is assumed to have a role in the pathophysiology of atrial septal defect (ASD). In this study, we evaluated the autonomic system by measuring HRV in children with ASD. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with ASD and 32 healthy children (mean ages: 6.6±2.1 years and 6.4±2.2 years, respectively) were enrolled in the study. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory electrocardiographic recordings were obtained and the seven time-domain (SDNN, SDANN, rMSSD, SD, SDNN i

Autonomic control of the aging heart.

Cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure continue to account for the majority of deaths in the developed world. Whilst the incidence of these clinical disorders does increase with age, outcomes in affected patients tend to be disproportionately adverse with advancing years. In this context it is important to understand the various compensatory processes which become activated in cardiovascular disease. In particular, the autonomic nervous system is known to play a key pathogenic role in the cause and response to many of these conditions.

Opioid modulation of baroreceptor reflex sensitivity in dogs.

Opioid peptides can modulate cardiovascular function both directly and by modifying specific responses. The action of opioids on baroreceptors was evaluated in anesthetized dogs. Baroreceptor responsiveness was determined by observing the peak heart rate and blood pressure responses as well as by evaluating the slope of a line relating heart period to blood pressure while pharmacologically altering blood pressure with doses of phenylephrine hydrochloride and sodium nitroprusside. These tests were performed before and after administration of naloxone (40 micrograms/kg). Naloxone significantly b

Myoclonus and urinary retention following subarachnoid morphine injection in a dog.

A 5-year-old German Shepherd dog which presented for total hip replacement developed myoclonus and urinary retention after the subarachnoid injection of preservative-free morphine. Myoclonus was resistant to treatment, except pentobarbital anesthesia. Urinary retention was treated with bethanechol and subsided within a few days. Involuntary muscular activity can result from the epidural, subarachnoid or systemic injection of various opioid drugs, or as a result of the toxic or irritant effect of preservatives or autologous blood. The latter were not causative factors in this case. Opioid agoni

Comparison of the effects of atropine and labetalol on trigeminocardiac reflex-induced hemodynamic alterations during percutaneous microballoon compression of the trigeminal ganglion.

BACKGROUND: A significant abrupt drop in heart rate is the most frequent complication during percutaneous microballoon compression of the trigeminal ganglion. It is suggested that co-activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems plays an important role in this occurrence. We hypothesized that not only atropine, but also labetalol might be effective in preventing this cardiovascular reflex during percutaneous microballoon compression of the trigeminal ganglion. METHODS: Patients who underwent percutaneous microballoon compression for trigeminal neuralgia between September 2…

Alterations in cardiovascular autonomic function tests in idiopathic hyperhidrosis.

We performed cardiovascular autonomic function tests to assess sympathetic and parasympathetic functions in patients with idiopathic hyperhidrosis. We studied 35 patients with idiopathic hyperhidrosis and 35 age- and sex-matched controls. A thermoregulatory sweat test (TST) was performed in all subjects. Sweating was qualitatively (Minor's test at 22°C) and quantitatively (skin conductance) evaluated. Orthostatism, tilt to 65°, cold pressor test, deep breathing, Valsalva maneuver and hyperventilation were performed in patients and controls. A greater fall in blood pressure values was observed

Harmonic Analysis of Electrical Activity in Pelvic and Lumbar Regions of Healthy Men.

To noninvasively assess activity of autonomic nervous system (ANS) in pelvic as well as in left and right dorsal lumbar regions of healthy men (n = 26) in the neighborhood of prostate and kidneys, respectively, the study measured the voltaic (voltage differences) and ohmic (electrical impedances) signals. The recorded signals were processed with Fourier transform yielding the ohmic and voltaic spectral peaks in the ranges of Mayer frequency (M = 0.03-0.2 Hz) and in the Traube-Hering frequency of controlled respiration rate (TH = 0.35 Hz), which reflected activity of sympathetic and parasympath

Neuronal innervation of the intestinal crypt.

Mucosal damage is a key feature of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and healing of the mucosa is an endpoint of IBD treatment that is often difficult to achieve. Autonomic neurons of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system may influence intestinal epithelial cell growth and modulating epithelial innervation could for that reason serve as an interesting therapeutic option to improve mucosal healing. Understanding of the biological processes triggered by nonspecific and specific epithelial adrenergic and cholinergic receptor activation is of key importance. At present, with rising te

Autonomic neuropathy in chronic alcoholism: evaluation of cardiovascular, pupillary and sympathetic skin responses.

Autonomic nerve function was evaluated in 30 alcoholics and 30 healthy subjects by means of cardiovascular function tests, pupil cycle time (PCT), and sympathetic skin responses (SSR). Nutritional status was assessed by anthropometric parameters. Autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction was classified as early involvement in 5 patients, definite in 8, severe in 6 and atypical in 3. PCT was abnormal in 17 alcoholics. The duration of PCT became progressively longer as the severity of cardiovascular involvement increased. SSR was absent in 4 alcoholics in the palm and in 16 in the sole. These finding

[The vagus regulation of the electrical activity of the contractile apparatus in the small intestine of rats under normal and pathological conditions].

The role of parasympathetic division of the vegetal nervous system in regulation of the small intestine motor activity under the normal and pathological conditions was estimated using multifactorial quantitative analysis of the electrical activity of its smooth muscle under the conditions of vagotomy, chronic duodenal ulcer and their combination. Switching off the intestine vagal innervation led to its weakened and altered motor activity, most pronounced on the 3rd and 30th day. Development of the duodenal ulcer is accompanied by the increased motor activity of the intestine with the spasm phe
