We examined the expression of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase alpha-subunit isoforms in rat salivary glands by RT-PCR. Isoform alpha1 was expressed strongly in all three major salivary glands. The alpha2 isoform was expressed in both submandibular gland (SMG) and sublingual gland (SLG) but faintly in the parotid gland (PG). The alpha3 was detected only in the SLG, and the alpha3 mRNA in the SLG was 1/8 of its level in the brain. Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase alpha3 isoform in the SLG, was localized predominantly on the basolateral plasma membranes in serous cells by immunohistochemical method. We also found the presenc

Between 1977 and 1992 four patients with liposarcomas of the head and neck region were treated and regularly reexamined at the ENT department of the University of Tubingen. Our patients were aged 19, 64, 66, and 73 years at primary diagnosis. Three patients were female and one was male. The tumors were located in cheek/parotid gland, the neck, the tracheoesophageal region and larynx/hypopharynx. In three patients complete primary resection was planned. In three cases further surgery was necessary due to recurrences. Two patients are free of tumor for seven and nine years, respectively. One pat

This study reviewed the clinical presentation, cytologic findings, and the immunophenotype of 69 Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) cases sampled by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Demographic and clinical data, the cytology findings, and results of ancillary testing were reviewed. Median patient age was 78 years (37-104) with a 1:1.8 female to male ratio. The most common FNA sites sampled included lymph nodes in the neck, the axillary region, the inguinal region and the parotid gland. Most patients had a history of MCC (68%) and/or non-MCC malignancy (70%). The common cytologic pattern was a cellul

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection usually affects the respiratory system; however, a number of atypical manifestations of this disease have also been reported, especially in children. The present study reports a case of a 12-year-old presenting with right unilateral parotitis and sialadenitis and SARS-CoV-2 infection. The young patient, after a 3-day history of fever, was brought to our clinic (Polyclinic University Hospital 'G. Rodolico', Catania, Italy) for the sudden onset of unilateral parotitis accompanied by sialadenitis and hyperaemia of the skin, wh

In this study, we introduced a small "V" shaped incision around the ear lobe modified from fact-lift approach to treat the mandibular condylar neck and subcondylar fractures to further minimize and hide the postsurgical scars. A total of 15 cases with mandibular condylar fractures from low levels of condylar neck to high levels of subcondylar region were treated by this approach. An incision was designed from the posterior rim of the tragus down to the anterior skin wrinkle to the ear lobe, surrounding it, continually up and backward for a little distance, forming a "V"-like shape. After cutti

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic procedures require a detailed understanding of surface anatomy to avoid complications. The head and neck region has prominent danger zones including nerves and vasculature that may be at risk during cutaneous surgery. A thorough understanding of these danger zones can help avoid complications that may lead to functional or cosmetic impairment.
METHODS: The anatomic literature regarding the course of high-risk structures of the head and neck was reviewed. Structures deemed at risk during dermatologic procedures were included in the analysis. The final analysis focused

Solitary fibrous tumours are of mesenchymal origin and comprise of uncommon spindle cell neoplasias. Most commonly the lesions arise from pleura but other rarer sites include lungs, peritoneum, pericardium, nasal cavities, thyroid, parotid gland and orbit. We report the case of a 41-year-old male patient who presented to us with a painless, progressive growth of a mass in the superior part of left orbit with proptosis and inferotemporal displacement of the left eye. Computed Tomography (CT) scan revealed homogeneous enhancing lesion in the superior compartment of left orbit in the extraconal r

PURPOSE: Modified endoscopically assisted resection of benign tumors in the accessory parotid gland region (APGR) has been reported, and the surgery confers a potential risk of injury to the great auricular nerve. This clinical research study provides an updated approach for the resection of benign tumors of the APGR.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen cases diagnosed with primary benign tumors in the APGR were treated by endoscopically assisted resection through a margin of the tragus, and its feasibility was evaluated.
RESULTS: All tumors were completely resected. The procedures lasted 45 to 7

BACKGROUND: The causes of neuralgia are usually not known, but the condition can be caused by an underlying condition.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old man presented at the accident and emergency department with a 6-week history of continuous nagging pain in the region of his right ear, extending to the lower jaw and the right side of his neck; this worsened in progressive attacks, which were sometimes followed by non-rotatory dizziness and loss of consciousness. This clinical picture lead us to suspect glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) because of the distribution of the pain and the secondary

Heterotrophic soft tissue calcification occurs with the deposit of calcium salts in soft tissue rather than bone. The aim of this report is to describe cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) and ultrasonographic (US) findings of 2 cases of soft tissue calcifications that were initially diagnosed as submandibular or parotid sialolithiasis. Multiple soft tissue calcifications were evaluated by panoramic radiography, CBCT imaging, and US imaging in a 50-year-old male patient and a 30-year-old male patient. Calcifications were detected in the soft tissue of the submandibular area at axial, coronal,

Many individuals with neurological problems or anatomical abnormalities of the jaw, lips or oral cavity may drool, which can impact on health and quality of life. A thorough evaluation of the patient's history, examination of the oral region by a speech pathologist and, in individuals over 3 years, a dental examination is warranted. Questionnaires with established validity such as the Drooling Impact Scale are useful assessment tools. A hierarchical approach to treatment is taken from least invasive therapies, such as speech pathology, to more invasive, such as injection of botulinum neurotoxi

Salivary gland tumors are a group of the most common tumors in the oral and maxillofacial region. They have features with complicated histopathologic classification and wide distribution. There is little knowledge on the clinicopathologic characteristics and clinical behaviors of salivary gland tumors of various locations and subtype. The management of salivary gland tumors is also controversial. Biopsy is not suggested because of seeding of tumor cells. Therefore adjunctive methods are important for preoperative diagnosis. Since 1985, our research group has performed a series of basic and cli

Herein the case is reported of a synchronous parapharyngeal space pleomorphic adenoma arising from the pharyngeal prolongation of the parotid gland and the contralateral submandibular gland, diagnosed in a young Caucasian female. Case reports and recent literature are presented. Upon physical examination, asymmetry of the lower part of the right side of the face with overlying intact skin, and a submucosal firm swelling, filling the ipsilateral side of the oropharyngeal wall, involving the right tonsillar bed which was medially displaced was immediately recognizable. The patient did not compla

Giant cell tumor of soft tissue with low malignant potential (GCT-ST) is a low-grade, primary soft tissue sarcoma with histological and clinical features similar to giant cell tumor of the bone. The main tumor localizations are the extremities, but it may also occur in the head and neck region. GCT-ST shows a recurrence rate of approximately 15%, but it very rarely metastasizes. The risk of cancer development, especially of the skin, is up to fivefold increased in immunosuppressed patients after organ transplantation. The association of sarcomas and immunosuppressive therapy is best known for
