Evaluation of a Group-based Patient Education Program Promoting Self-management in Adults with Hirschsprung Disease and Anorectal Malformations.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with Hirschsprung disease (HD) and anorectal malformations (ARM) may experience persisting and new somatic and psychosocial problems. Patient education programs (PEPs) may improve self-management in patients with chronic illnesses. The aim of this study was to explore HD and ARM adults' experiences with and evaluation of a group-based PEP. We also looked at factors that might influence the attendance rate. METHOD: Non-intellectually impaired HD and ARM adults were invited to attend a diagnosis specific PEP at a pelvic floor interdisciplinary center. Eight health care prof

Serial Exercise Testing and Echocardiography Findings of Patients With Kawasaki Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common form of pediatric vasculitis. We evaluated the influence of KD on cardiopulmonary function and analyzed the echocardiographic findings of patients with KD through serial follow-ups from childhood to adolescence. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. We recruited patients with KD after the acute stage who underwent at least two (with >1-year interval between visits) cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and echocardiographic examinations in the last 10 years. Cardiopulmonary function was determined through CPET on a treadmill. The maximu

A systematic review of the impact of carer interventions on outcomes for patients with eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Eating disorder (ED) prevalence and illness severity is rapidly increasing. The complicated interplay of factors contributing to the maintenance of EDs, including family/carer influences, highlights the importance of carer interventions within ED treatment. Carer interventions demonstrate positive outcomes for carers themselves, though are also hypothesised to benefit the patient indirectly. A systematic review was conducted to greater understand the impact of carer interventions on ED patient outcomes. METHODS: Eight databases, including CINAHL, MEDLINE and PsychINFO, were systemati

Cardiac structure and function in very preterm-born adolescents compared to term-born controls: A longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence of differences in cardiac structure and function in preterm-born adults and increased risk of heart failure. However, there is a paucity of data in populations who have been exposed to modern intensive care and the impact of perinatal factors is unclear. AIMS: To compare echocardiographic measures of cardiac structure and function in a regional cohort of 17-year-olds born very preterm compared to term-born peers and the influence of perinatal factors. STUDY DESIGN: Observational longitudinal cohort study. SUBJECTS: A regional cohort of ninety-one 17-ye

Self-esteem in hearing-impaired children: the influence of communication, education, and audiological characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Sufficient self-esteem is extremely important for psychosocial functioning. It is hypothesized that hearing-impaired (HI) children have lower levels of self-esteem, because, among other things, they frequently experience lower language and communication skills. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare HI children's self-esteem across different domains with those of normal hearing (NH) children and to investigate the influence of communication, type of education, and audiological characteristics. METHODS: This large (N = 252) retrospective, multicenter study consisted of two

Body size in early life and breast cancer risk in African American and European American women.

PURPOSE: There is growing evidence that body size in early life influences lifetime breast cancer risk, but little is known for African American (AA) women. METHODS: We evaluated body size during childhood and young adulthood and breast cancer risk among 1,751 cases [979 AA and 772 European American (EA)] and 1,673 controls (958 AA and 715 EA) in the Women's Circle of Health Study. Odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were computed using logistic regression models while adjusting for potential covariates. RESULTS: Among AA women, being shorter at 7-8 years compared to peers was

Factors associated with utilization of a free HIV VCT clinic by female sex workers in Jinan City, Northern China.

Based on our previous qualitative exploration, this research presents the second phase in our study of factors associated with utilization of a free HIV VCT clinic in Jinan City, Northern China, by female sex workers (FSWs). A total of 970 FSWs from entertainment venues were interviewed and prospectively followed to determine who ultimately sought and received VCT at the clinic, compared to those who did not. Simple and multiple logistic regressions were performed on factors drawn from the Ecological Perspective, hypothesized to be associated with utilization of testing at the VCT clinic. Desp

Association between adolescent idiopathic scoliosis prevalence and age at menarche in different geographic latitudes.

BACKGROUND: Age at menarche is considered a reliable prognostic factor for idiopathic scoliosis and varies in different geographic latitudes. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis prevalence has also been reported to be different in various latitudes and demonstrates higher values in northern countries. A study on epidemiological reports from the literature was conducted to investigate a possible association between prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and age at menarche among normal girls in various geographic latitudes. An attempt is also made to implicate a possible role of melatonin in

The Mediating Role of Alcohol Use Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Delinquency Among Youth in the Legal System.

Rates of alcohol use and exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are elevated among youth in the legal system (YILS) compared to their non-legally involved peers. Exposure to ACEs has been associated with later alcohol use and delinquency, and YILS often engage in delinquent behavior while under the influence of alcohol. The associations between ACEs, alcohol use, and delinquency among YILS are complex and multidirectional; research has yet to explore how these experiences and behaviors influence each other over time, or whether they differ based upon the reason for legal system invol

Outcomes of the Therapeutic Relationship in Treating Individuals Who Have Committed Crimes: A Systematic Review.

Several studies suggest that the quality of the therapeutic relationship (TR) between the patient and their therapist plays a significant role in predicting the outcomes of various forms of psychotherapy. However, it remains unclear whether the TR also influences the outcomes of treatment programs for justice-involved populations. Therefore, this systematic review aims to identify the impact of the TR on treatment outcomes with justice-involved individuals. A comprehensive search was conducted in B-on, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, PsycInfo, and Scielo for peer-reviewed quantitative studies

Reporting Data on Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) in Rats: Recommendations Based on Review of Experimental Protocols and Literature.

Research in hearing science is accelerating, and a wealth of data concerning auditory brainstem responses (ABR) in various animal models is published in peer-reviewed journals every year. Recently, we reviewed studies using ABR measurements in tinnitus rat models. We found significant discrepancies in the outcomes of these studies, some due to different research approaches and others due to different methodologies. Thus, the present work aimed to collect comprehensive information on all factors influencing ABR recordings in rats and compile recommendations on ABR data reporting. A questionnair

Perspectives on Health Data Sharing Among Patients With Somatic and Mental Health Diseases: Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: The German Health Data Utilization Act and the Digital Act aim to enhance health data sharing for health care and research in Germany and beyond while ensuring robust data protection. A key prerequisite is patients' willingness to share their data for primary use (PU), such as medical care, and secondary use (SU), such as research. There is a lack of qualitative research examining patients' perspectives on data sharing under the new legal framework, especially among vulnerable groups, such as those with mental health diseases. OBJECTIVE: This study qualitatively examines the facto
