BACKGROUND: Emotional instability and dyscontrolled behaviours are central features in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Recently, some cognitive dysfunctional mechanisms, such as anger rumination, have been found to increase negative emotions and promote dyscontrolled behaviours. Even though rumination has consistently been linked to BPD traits in non-clinical samples, its relationship with problematic behaviour has yet to be established in a clinical population.
AIM: The purpose of the study was to explore the relationships between emotional dysregulation, anger rumination and aggressi

The objective of the study is to assess the relationships between personality traits, lifetime psychosocial functioning, and crime scene behavior. Thirty-five male offenders referred for forensic psychiatric assessment in Sweden (1996-2001) and assigned a main diagnosis of either antisocial personality disorder (APD) or autism spectrum disorder (AUT) were retrospectively studied. APD were subcategorized into impulsive (APDi) and controlled (APDc). Those in the AUT group were less intoxicated at the time of the crime and did not often use knives or guns compared to the APD group. Males in the A

Patients attending the Polyclinic of the Psychiatry Department of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich for ambulatory examination and counseling because of panic anxiety states with agoraphobia, were investigated using methods of descriptive-phenomenological diagnostic evaluation of syndromes and personality (structured clinical interviews on the basis of DSM III Criteria) and with methods of empirical married couple and family diagnostic evaluation (Giessen-Paar-Test, Family-Assessment-Measure). On the basis of the findings established on three different observational planes--syndrome,

Two self-report questionnaires (MCMI and BSI) designed to measure personality disorder (PD) according to DSM-III (R) criteria were administered to patients with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) (n = 19), bulimia nervosa (BN) (n = 16), or both diagnoses (AN + BN) (n = 9), both before and after treatment for the eating disorder. The main finding was that self-reported Personality Disorder (PD) diagnoses are not stable enduring characteristics among this group of eating disorder patients. A high rate of PD diagnoses occurred in all patient groups at admission (93%) and at discharge (79%). Bot

A number of authors have questioned the rationale for subdividing the DSM-II schizoid diagnosis into three separate personality disorders in DSM-III, the schizoid, avoidant, and schizotypal. The present study was designed to explore differences between psychiatric patients with schizoid and avoidant personalities as compared to psychiatric controls with no personality disorder. Differences were examined on demographic data, self-report measures, and clinical information. A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant overall effect for groups across MMPI subscales. However

This study had 3 aims: to determine whether rheumatoid arthritics had certain personality traits; to examine the relationship between psychological factors and the presence of rheumatoid factor in blood serum; and to explore the prognostic significance of psychological factors in the management of rheumatoid arthritis. Within a few days of discharge, 129 in-patient rheumatoid arthritics were clinically and psychologically assessed and allocated at random to 1 of 3 forms of follow-up care. The psychological assessment included measures of personality, non-psychotic psychiatric disturbance, and

The alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD) traits were designed to maintain continuity with the Section II personality disorder (PD) diagnoses by retaining the same clinical information. Whether the AMPD traits achieve this is not well established. Prior work testing incremental validity of AMPD traits and Section II diagnoses is limited by the fact each model was measured by a different instrument or rater, making it unclear whether discrepancies are due to the constructs or methods. Here, we compare the incremental validity of AMPD traits versus Section II PDs assessed by the same

Personality traits predict the quality of intimate relationships, and as a result can be useful additions to assessments of couple functioning. For traits involving social behavior, the affiliation (i.e., warmth, friendliness vs. hostility, quarrelsomeness) and control (i.e., dominance vs. deference, submissiveness) dimensions of the interpersonal circumplex (IPC) are an alternative to the 5-factor model traits of agreeableness and extraversion, given that they may provide a more specific and relevant description of social behavior in the context of couple functioning. The couple context creat

This exploratory study was conducted with the purpose of enumerating both particular social stressors (e.g., the presence of trauma) and the incidence of a comorbid diagnosis (i.e., personality disorder[s] and substance abuse) on a sample of women in a residential therapeutic community. The women in the study were assessed within the first 3 weeks following admission into drug treatment, and then again 6 months after leaving the program. The initial assessment generally took 2 hours and consisted of the Structured Clinical Inventory for DSM-III-R-Patient edition (SCID-II), Addiction Severity I

One-hundred-ninety-nine adult mental health service users were interviewed with a protocol that included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Structured Clinical Interviews for Axis I and II DSM-IV disorders, the Global Assessment of Functioning scale, the SCORE family assessment measure, the Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule, and the Readiness for Psychotherapy Index. Compared to a U.S. normative sample, Irish clinical cases had higher levels of maltreatment. Cases with comorbid axis I and II disorders reported more child maltreatment than those with axis I disorders o

BackgroundIn Parkinson's disease (PD), predictive factors of Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) remain insufficiently understood. Personality and polygenic risk scores (PRS) have both been independently associated with ICDs.ObjectivesOur objective was to study the interaction effects between personality dimensions and PRS on the odds of developing ICDs.MethodsThis case-control study included PD patients with and without ICDs (n = 250 patients). Personality was assessed using the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised, and PRS were computed from genotyping data across 18 traits linked to psy

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that eating disorder subtypes reflecting under-controlled, over-controlled, and low psychopathology personality traits constitute reliable phenotypes that differentiate treatment response. This study is the first to use statistical analyses to identify these subtypes within treatment-seeking individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) and to use these statistically derived clusters to predict clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Using variables from the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology-Basic Questionnaire, K-means cluster analyses identified under-controlled, over

In this study, we systematically review and synthesize the evidence on the association between central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and personality types, and quantify the relationship between Type A behaviour and CSC. We systematically searched 12 literature databases on 5 October 2025 for studies in which personality types were evaluated in patients with CSC. Data extraction and risk-of-bias assessment followed standardized protocols. Studies were reviewed qualitatively. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed for the association between Type A behaviour and CSC. Twelve studies of 2176

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Associations between problematic internet use (PIU) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been reported, but the literature is highly heterogeneous, with some studies assessing overall BPD severity and others examining individual traits (e.g., emotional lability, impulsivity, dissociation). This review synthesizes these approaches using the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD), examining how BPD-relevant pathological personality traits (Criterion B) and impairments in self and interpersonal functioning (Criterion A) relate to PIU.
METHODS: Following

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is often preceded by stages of cognitive impairment, namely subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). While cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers are established predictors of AD, other non-invasive candidate predictors include personality traits, anxiety, and depression, among others. These predictors offer non-invasive assessment and exhibit changes during AD development and preclinical stages.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, we comparatively evaluated the predictive value of personality traits (Big Five), geriatric anx

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous research has demonstrated phenotypical associations between disordered gambling (DG) and Big 5 personality traits, and a twin study suggested that shared genetic influences accounted for a substantial portion of this relation. The present study examined associations between DG and polygenic scores (PSs) for Big 5 traits to measure the shared genetic underpinnings of Big 5 personality traits and DG.
DESIGN: Zero-inflated negative binomial regression models estimated associations between Big 5 PSs and past-year and life-time assessments of DG in a longitudinally as

OBJECTIVE: Among evidence-based treatments for personality disorder (PD), mentalization-based treatment (MBT) represents a manualized, long-term treatment. Both MBT and non-manualized psychotherapeutic treatments (NMT) are currently applied for patients with PDs in Norway. This clinical population is characterized by varying impairment of personality functioning (PF). Few have investigated how MBT and NMT are suited for the heterogeneity of personality problems presenting to health services and how they compare. This study aimed to investigate 1) characteristics of patients admitted to MBT ver
