Atypical neural activation and age-related patterns in dyslexia.

This magnetoencephalography study investigated the spatiotemporal neural responses during single-word reading. We used a silent reading task with linguistic stimuli varying in lexicality and frequency (high- and low-frequency words, and pseudowords), and tested typically developing (TD) and dyslexic developing (DD) children (aged 7 to 12). We observed no significant sensitivity to word frequency or lexicality either within or between the groups, likely reflecting the constraints of the silent reading paradigm. Direct comparisons between the groups revealed significant amplitude reductions in t

A visual imagery paradigm for BCI strategies using imagined flickering patterns.

Steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) are a popular type of control signals in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), in which they are typically elicited by observing a visual stimulus flashing at a specific frequency. For some patients, using SSVEP as control signal for a BCI can be difficult, for instance if they are unable to focus their gaze over the visual stimuli. To address this issue, some approaches were presented to design a gaze-independent SSVEP-controlled BCI but some difficulties have been reported, for instance for patients suffering from locked-in syndrome. In this work

Local variations in L/M ratio influence the detection and color naming of small spots.

The distribution of long (L)-, middle (M)-, and short (S)-wavelength sensitive cones in the retina determines how different frequencies of incident light are sampled across space and has been hypothesized to influence spatial and color vision. We examined how the detection and color naming of small, short-duration increment stimuli (λ = 543 or 680 nm) depend on the local spectral topography of the cone mosaic. Stimuli were corrected for optical aberrations by an adaptive optics system and targeted to locations in the parafovea where cone spectral types were known. We found that sensitivity to

Impact of Deafness on the Lateralized Brain Responses to Letters and Digits: A Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation Exploratory Study in Deaf and Hearing Children.

Numbers and letters are culturally created symbols that acquire meaning through extensive training, significantly influencing brain function. The distinct hemispheric specialization of cortical regions for these categories has been hypothesized to relate to the co-activated brain networks: the left language regions for letters, and the right intra-parietal sulcus for numbers. However, the potential influence of deafness and sign language on hemispheric specialization for letters and numbers remains unclear. The present study aims to explore this issue by using a FPVS-EEG approach with an oddba

Perceptual and emotional processing deficits in severe alcohol use disorder: The role of spatial frequency.

Emotional facial expression decoding deficits are consistently reported in severe Alcohol Use Disorder (sAUD), hampering social interactions and promoting relapse. Individuals with sAUD also exhibit visuo-perceptive deficits, persisting despite abstinence. However, these two key impairments of sAUD have never been considered simultaneously. We explored the role of perception in emotional facial expression processing by directly manipulating the spatial frequency content of emotional faces. Thirty-one patients and 30 matched healthy controls performed emotion detection, discrimination, and labe

Effects of visual cues on scene-relative object motion judgments and concurrent heading estimation from optic flow.

During self-movement, the visual system uses optic flow to identify scene-relative object motion and estimate the direction of self-movement (heading). Although both processes rely on optic flow, their relationship and the conditions under which independent object motion biases heading estimation remain unclear. The causal inference model predicts that misjudging object motion leads to its integration into heading estimation, causing errors in heading estimation, whereas correct judgments reduce these errors. However, most studies have examined these processes independently. Here we used a dua

Visual crowding reduces blur sensitivity in peripheral vision: a study using natural textures in virtual reality.

Peripheral vision plays a crucial role in extended reality by supporting immersion, navigation, and spatial awareness beyond the central field of view. However, it also presents perceptual differences compared to central vision, such as reduced visual acuity. One of the most significant challenges is visual crowding, where the presence of nearby elements disrupts the recognition of a peripheral target. While extensively studied in visual neuroscience, the practical implications of crowding for immersive image processing remain largely unexplored. This study investigates how crowding affects th

Decreases in overall light level increase the severity of the reverse Pulfrich effect.

The Pulfrich effect is an illusion characterized by the misperception of the depth and 3D direction of moving objects. Interocular luminance differences cause the classic Pulfrich effect; the darker image is processed more slowly. Interocular blur differences cause the reverse Pulfrich effect; the blurrier image is processed more quickly. A common correction for presbyopia-monovision-intentionally induces the optical conditions that cause the reverse Pulfrich effect. The effect sizes, and the fact that tens of millions of people wear these corrections every day, raise concerns about public saf

Single-neuron correlates of visual consciousness in human lateral occipital complex.

Conscious perception, a critical aspect of human cognition, is assumed to emerge from a complex network of interacting brain regions that transmit information via feedforward and recurrent pathways. This study presents single- and multiunit recordings from the human lateral occipital complex (LO), a key region for shape and object recognition, during three distinct perceptual paradigms: backward masking, flash suppression and binocular rivalry. Stimulus awareness increased decoding accuracy and decoders assigned higher probabilities to the consciously perceived stimulus during periods of dicho

Human brain representations of internally generated outcomes of approximate calculation revealed by ultra-high-field brain imaging.

Much of human culture's advanced technology owes its existence to the ability to mentally manipulate quantities. Neuroscience has described the brain regions overall recruited by numerical tasks and the neuronal codes representing individual quantities during perceptual tasks. Nevertheless, it remains unknown how quantity representations are combined or transformed during mental computations and how specific quantities are coded in the brain when generated as the result of internal computations rather than evoked by a stimulus. Here, we imaged the brains of adult human subjects at 7 Tesla duri

Statistical Evaluation of ERG Responses: A New Method to Validate Cycle-by-Cycle Recordings in Advanced Retinal Degenerations.

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate a novel method to determine the validity of measurements made using cycle-by-cycle (CxC) recording techniques in patients with advanced retinal degenerations (RD) having low-amplitude flicker electroretinogram (ERG) responses. METHODS: The method extends the original CxC recording algorithm introduced by Sieving et al., retaining the original recording setup and the preliminary analysis of raw data. Novel features include extended use of spectrum analysis, reduction of errors due to known sources, and a comprehensive statistical assessment using three differe

High-gamma frequency flash stimulation as a possible cognitive facilitator in rat pups.

High-gamma frequency flashes can enhance cognition by synchronizing neural oscillations in mammals. Early flash treatment promotes the development of improved cognitive functions in young children. However, it is unclear whether exposure to high-gamma frequency flashes in preschool-aged individuals affects cognition in preadolescents by regulating neural oscillations in the brain. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of gamma-frequency flashes on cognitive ability. In this study, the effect of high-frequency flicker on cognitive performance was verified by behavioural experiments such as

Decoding Brain Signals from Rapid-Event EEG for Visual Analysis Using Deep Learning.

The perception and recognition of objects around us empower environmental interaction. Harnessing the brain's signals to achieve this objective has consistently posed difficulties. Researchers are exploring whether the poor accuracy in this field is a result of the design of the temporal stimulation (block versus rapid event) or the inherent complexity of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Decoding perceptive signal responses in subjects has become increasingly complex due to high noise levels and the complex nature of brain activities. EEG signals have high temporal resolution and are non-st

Seeing fast and slow: the influence of music-induced affective states and individual sensory sensitivity on visual processing speed.

There is a speed-accuracy trade-off in perception. The ability to quickly extract sensory information is critical for survival, while extended processing can improve our accuracy. It has been suggested that emotions can change our style of processing, but their influence on processing speed is not yet clear. In three experiments, combining online and laboratory studies with different emotion induction procedures, we investigated the influence of both affective states, manipulated with music, and individual traits in sensory-processing sensitivity on the ability to rapidly segregate two visual

Observation inflation as source confusion: Symmetrical conflation of memories based on action performance and observation.

People often cannot remember the source of their memories despite recalling other elements of a remembered event correctly. Observation inflation is one such error of source monitoring. It refers to remembering the actions of another agent as self-performed. While the existence of this memory error is well documented, it is not clear how it relates to other errors of source attribution: It is not evident whether the phenomenon reflects (1) a specific tendency to appropriate the actions of other agents, (2) a general confusion of sources with overlapping features, or (3) whether it is a confoun

The odd one out - Orthographic oddball processing in children with poor versus typical reading skills in a fast periodic visual stimulation EEG paradigm.

The specialization of left ventral occipitotemporal brain regions to automatically process word forms develops with reading acquisition and is diminished in children with poor reading skills (PR). Using a fast periodic visual oddball stimulation (FPVS) design during electroencephalography (EEG), we examined the level of sensitivity and familiarity to word form processing in ninety-two children in 2nd and 3rd grade with varying reading skills (n = 35 for PR, n = 40 for typical reading skills; TR). To test children's level of "sensitivity", false font (FF) and consonant string (CS) oddballs were

Atypical oscillatory and aperiodic signatures of visual sampling in developmental dyslexia.

Temporal processing deficits in Developmental Dyslexia (DD) have been documented extensively at the behavioral level, leading to the formulation of neural theories positing that such anomalies in parsing multisensory input rely on aberrant synchronization of neural oscillations or to an excessive level of neural noise. Despite reading being primarily supported by visual functions, experimental evidence supporting these theories remains scarce. Here, we tested 26 adults with DD (9 females) and 31 neurotypical controls (16 females) with a temporal segregation/integration task that required parti

Concussion can increase the risk of visually induced motion sickness.

Concussion can lead to various symptoms such as balance problems, memory impairments, dizziness, and/or headaches. It has been previously suggested that during self-motion relevant tasks, individuals with concussion may rely heavily on visual information to compensate for potentially less reliable vestibular inputs and/or problems with multisensory integration. As such, concussed individuals may also be more sensitive to other visually-driven sensations such as visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). To investigate whether concussed individuals are at elevated risk of experiencing VIMS, we ex
