The AtFLC-AtFT Pathway Is Involved in the Early Flowering Promoted by Loss of AtHO1 Function in Arabidopsis.

Although previous studies have indicated that heme oxygenase 1 (HO1/HY1) regulates the flowering time via the photoperiod pathway, the specific mechanism is still elusive. Here, we found that the Arabidopsis hy1-100 mutant displayed early flowering, and the characteristic expression patterns of several master genes involved in the autonomous pathway were altered. Notably, the transcript levels of FLOWERING LOCUS C (AtFLC) gene declined developmentally in both wild-type and hy1-100 mutant, with a more pronounced fold reduction observed in the mutant. Genetic evidence further underlined that hy1…

Sarcolipin relates to fattening, but not sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase uncoupling, in captive migratory gray catbirds.

In order to complete their energetically demanding journeys, migratory birds undergo a suite of physiological changes to prepare for long-du … ignal for mitochondrial biogenesis, fatigue resistance and a shift to fatty acid oxidation. Using a photoperiod manipulation of captive gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis), we investigated whether SLN may play a role in coordinating the development of the migratory phenotype. In response to long-day photostimulation, catbirds demonstrated migratory restles …

Effect of season on histoarchitecture of pineal gland in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

BACKGROUND: The photoperiod and other seasonal variations are the key factors that affect reproduction and production of the animals. The pineal gland secretes melatonin hormone that affects several physiological functions of the body during different seasons. AIMS: The present study was conducted to study the histoarchitectural and micrometrical changes in the pineal gland of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) during different seasons of the year. METHODS: Pineal glands of 30 adult female Jaffarabadi buffaloes were collected from the slaughterhouse during the winter, summer, and rainy seasons. Sampl…

Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids as Non-Photic Zeitgebers and Circadian Clock Synchronizers.

Omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3 FAs) are well-known for their actions on immune/inflammatory and neurological pathways, functions that are also under circadian clock regulation. The daily photoperiod represents the primary circadian synchronizer ('zeitgeber'), although diverse studies have pointed towards an influence of dietary FAs on the biological clock. A comprehensive literature review was conducted following predefined selection criteria with the aim of updating the evidence on the molecular mechanisms behind circadian rhythm regulation by ω-3 FAs. We collected preclinical and clinical studies,…

Photodynamic inactivation of Botrytis cinerea by an anionic porphyrin: an alternative pest management of grapevine.

Botrytis cinerea is a necrotic plant fungus that causes gray mold disease in over 200 crops, including grapevine. Due to its genetic plastic … detached leaves of any of the three grapevine varieties after 72 h growth when subjected to a 16 h photoperiod, contrary to untreated mycelium. These results suggest a strong potential of photo-treatment against B. cinerea mycelium for future agricultural practices in vineyard or other cultures.

Melatonin receptors in Atlantic salmon stimulate cAMP levels in heterologous cell lines and show season-dependent daily variations in pituitary expression levels.

The hormone melatonin connects environmental cues, such as photoperiod and temperature, with a number of physiological and behavioural processes, including seasonal reproduction, through binding to their cognate receptors. This study reports the structural, functional and physiological characterization of five high-affinity melatonin receptors (Mtnr1aaα, Mtnr1aaβ, Mtnr1ab, Mtnr1al, Mtnr1b) in Atlantic salmon. Phylogenetic analysis clustered salmon melatonin receptors into three monophyletic groups, Mtnr1A, Mtnr1Al and Mtnr1B, but no functional representative of the Mtnr1C group. Contrary to pr…

Ambient temperature effects on stress-induced hyperthermia in Svalbard ptarmigan.

Stress-induced hyperthermia (SIH) is commonly observed during handling in homeotherms. However, in birds, handling in cold environments typi … etween seasons, despite higher body condition/insulation in winter and dramatic seasonal changes in photoperiod, both of which could possibly affect stress responsiveness. Our study supports the notion that SIH is a general thermoregulatory reaction to acute stressors in endotherms, but also suggests that body size and thermal environment should be taken into …

Melatonin and the immune-hematopoietic system therapeutic and adverse pharmacological correlates.

The pineal neurohormone melatonin functionally synchronizes the photoperiod in the organism. In the last decade, it has become increasingly clear that the pineal gland and melatonin also play an important immunoregulatory role. T helper (Th) cells bear G-protein-coupled melatonin receptors. Activation of melatonin receptors enhances the release of Th cell cytokines, such as gamma-interferon and interleukin-2, as well as novel opioid cytokines which cross-react immunologically with both interleukin-4 and dynorphin B. These mediators may counteract secondary immunodeficiencies, protect mice agai…

Testicular dysfunction in experimental chronic renal insufficiency: a deficiency of nocturnal pineal N-acetyltransferase activity.

Biochemical correlates of neuroendocrine/gonadal function and nocturnal levels of serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity were determin … d after 13 weeks of CRI in PNx rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain that were housed under a different photoperiod. These results suggest that pineal gland dysfunction is a feature of CRI in the PNx model. Such an abnormality might contribute to the pathogenesis of gonadal dysfunction in CRI.

Drought and high nighttime temperature impact on soybean seed yield and quality under ambient and elevated CO2 environments.

The increasing prevalence of abiotic stresses, including high nighttime temperatures (HNT) and drought during the reproductive stage, poses a risk to global soybean production. Additionally, the influence of rising atmospheric CO2 levels must be considered when addressing changes in temperature and drought conditions. In this study, two soybean genotypes, DS25-1 and DS31-243, were grown under control (0.15 m3 m-3 volumetric soil moisture content (VWC) and 30/22 °C day/night temperature), HNT (30/26 °C day/night temperature), and drought (0.08 m3 m-3 VWC) conditions at ambient (425 ppm, aCO2) a

Long-term monitoring of intracranial pressure in freely-moving rats; impact of different physiological states.

BACKGROUND: Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is observed in association with a range of brain disorders. There is limited insight into the regulatory mechanisms of ICP under physiological conditions, and consequently also under pathological conditions. Thereby, to understand the mechanisms underlying ICP dynamics, precise, valid and long-term ICP recordings are of importance in the preclinical setting. Herein, we used a novel telemetric system for ICP recordings which allowed for long-term recordings in freely-moving rats. The aim was to investigate ICP dynamics under different physiologic

Nocturnal blood pressure is associated with sympathetic nerve activity in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Elevated nocturnal blood pressure (BP) and nocturnal non-dipping are frequently observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are stronger predictors of cardiovascular complications and CKD progression than standard office BP. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is thought to modulate diurnal hemodynamic changes and the vascular endothelium plays a fundamental role in BP regulation. We hypothesized that SNS overactivity and endothelial dysfunction in CKD are linked to elevated nocturnal BP and non-dipping. In 32 CKD patients with hypertension (56 ± 7 years), office BP, 24-hr ambu
