Evidence that climate change has caused 'emergence' of tick-borne diseases in Europe?

Even though tick-borne disease systems are highly susceptible to climatic influences, climate change to date is not necessarily the cause of the marked increased incidence of a variety of tick-borne diseases in many parts of Europe over the past two decades. To test for causality, rather than coincidence, we need to examine whether the right sorts of climate change have occurred at the right time and in the right places to account for the observed heterogeneous temporal and spatial patterns of tick-borne disease 'emergence'. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) incidence, for example, showed a 3-fold

[Vilnius Medical Association: the first half-century (1805-1850)].

Vilnius Medical Association, oldest scientific medical association in Poland and in the Russian Empire, was founded for the purposes of self-development in 1805 on the initiative of an Austrian professor of pathology and detailed therapy, Józef Frank (1771-1842). From its beginnings, the association acted for the good of society and science, independently of political conditions and with varying intensity. Apart from doctors, it also included pharmacists who contributed towards raising the standard of pharmacy in Lithuania. The first half-century of its existence constitutes the most fruitful

Creating the Conditions for Flourishing: An Integrated Framework for Healthcare and Health Professions Education.

Healthcare and health professions education (HPE) organizations operate within complex ecosystems shaped by economic, workforce, regulatory, technological, political, educational, and societal pressures. These forces influence institutional priorities and the conditions in which people work and learn. Burnout and moral distress among clinicians, educators, staff, and learners can be understood in part as manifestations of misalignment between system demands and human needs and values. Although attention to burnout has been essential, approaches centered primarily on mitigating distress or stre

Structural determinants and health-related quality of life among people living with HIV: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy has increased life expectancy of people living with HIV, though estimates of quality of life remain consistently lower than that of the general population. Research on determinants of health-related quality of life among people living with HIV has predominantly focused on clinical factors, with limited attention to upstream structural determinants, or the economic, political, and social systems shaping resource distribution and health outcomes. Moreover, structural and social determinants are frequently conflated in the literature, challenging both conceptual

Negotiating authority and hierarchy amongst UK and Australian nurses.

BackgroundAuthority and hierarchy shape nursing practice, influencing professional relationships, decision-making, advocacy and patient care. Although these concepts are widely present in healthcare, they are often examined indirectly through issues such as communication, bullying, professional status or organisational culture, rather than as phenomena in their own right.Research question/aim/objectivesThe aim of this study was to explore how nurses and midwives in the United Kingdom and Australia experience authority and navigate hierarchy in their work, and the consequences of these dynamics

Assessing the correlation between STAR health risk forecasts with actual health emergencies in West and Central Africa: a three-year analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the Strategic Tool for Assessing Risks (STAR), developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), for its effectiveness in predicting public health emergencies across West and Central Africa during the period 2022-2024. STAR applies a composite risk scoring system based on four dimensions likelihood, severity, vulnerability, and coping capacity to classify hazards such as measles, cholera, and meningitis into five risk categories ranging from very low to very high. METHODS: Using a retrospective observational design, the study integrates quantitative outbreak

Integrating HIV/AIDS services into financial protection systems to increase sustainability of the HIV/AIDS response.

Begun in 2014, the Sustainable Financing Initiative (SFI) was dedicated to mobilizing domestic resources for the HIV response. Among its three programmatic pillars was a focus on ensuring financial protection for people living with HIV (PLHIV). SFI's activities were founded on a strong understanding of and alignment with partner government priorities, as well as costing and actuarial analyses, which allowed for the development of context-specific approaches for improving financial protection for PLHIV. SFI implemented financial protection activities in a total of nine countries; the five count

Container-based sanitation in Nairobi's Mukuru: roles, power, challenges and strategies.

Rapid urbanization in the developing world has exacerbated the crisis of poor sanitation within sprawling informal settlements. Container-Based Sanitation (CBS) has emerged as a promising, alternative solution designed to fill these critical infrastructural deficits where conventional sewage systems are absent. Despite its apparent potential, there is a recognized gap in the contextual understanding of CBS implementation, particularly concerning the influence of local social and political dynamics, which ultimately hinders effective scale and sustainable programming. This qualitative study aim

Improving complex health systems and lived environments for maternal and perinatal well-being in urban sub-Saharan Africa: the UrbanBirth Collective.

While maternal mortality decreased during the Millennium Development Goals era, it remains unacceptably high, with stagnation in reductions possible due to shocks such as COVID-19. Most women in low- and middle-income countries already receive antenatal care and over half give birth in health facilities. In cities, use of health facilities for childbirth is near universal (>90%). Cities present complex challenges in ensuring pregnant women receive equitable, high-quality care. The UrbanBirth Collective is a portfolio of projects in sub-Saharan African cities seeking to address an important kno

Perceived barriers and facilitators to family and community nurses' care for older adults: a descriptive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The aging population is becoming a growing challenge for health care systems, pushing toward the need for systemic adaptations. In Italy, the role of the Family and Community Nurse (FCN) was introduced as a response to these demographic changes, aimed at ensuring personalized and integrated care for the older adults at the national level. Despite national institutional recognition, the implementation of the FCN role varies considerably across regions, resulting in uneven and fragmented service delivery. To better understand this variability, the present study aimed to describe the

"What's in a name?": Using mpox as a case study to understand the importance of communication, advocacy, and information accuracy in disease nomenclature.

Historically, many diseases have been named after the species or location of discovery, the discovering scientists, or the most impacted population. However, species-specific disease names often misrepresent the true reservoir; location-based disease names are frequently targeted with xenophobia; some of the discovering scientists have darker histories; and impacted populations have been stigmatized for this association. Acknowledging these concerns, the World Health Organization now proposes naming diseases after their causative pathogen or symptomatology. Recently, this guidance has been ret

Fasudil alleviates cerebral ischemia‑reperfusion injury by inhibiting inflammation and improving neurotrophic factor expression in rats.

BACKGROUND: The importance of the international food regulatory system to global health, is often overlooked. There are calls to reform this system to promote healthy and sustainable food systems centred on the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), the United Nation's (UN's) standard-setting body. Yet this presents a significant political challenge, given Codex has historically prioritized food safety risks over wider harms to public health, and is dominated by powerful food exporting nations and industry groups with a primary interest in trade expansion. To better understand this challenge,

Trends of the Global, Regional, and National Incidence of Measles, Vaccine Coverage, and Risk Factors in 204 Countries From 1990 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Measles is a highly contagious disease that has caused global morbidity and mortality. Though great progress has been made in measles elimination, the resurgence of measles has been observed in recent years. As extant literature were mainly confined to data of local area, we conducted a systematic analysis to explore the trends of the incidence of measles, coverage rate, and the risk factors from 1990 to 2019 on global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: Data on cases of incidence, age standardized rate (ASR), vaccine coverage, and risk factors of measles were retrieved from

The state of diet-related NCD policies in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Tunisia and Vietnam: a comparative assessment that introduces a 'policy cube' approach.

We assessed the technical content of sugar, salt and trans-fats policies in six countries in relation to the World Health Organization 'Best Buys' guidelines for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). National research teams identified policies and strategies related to promoting healthy diets and restricting unhealthy consumption, including national legislation, development plans and strategies and health sector-related policies and plans. We identified relevant text in relation to the issuing agency, overarching aims, goals, targets and timeframes, specific policy me

Task shifting in health service delivery from a decision and policy makers' perspective: a case of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Documented evidence shows that task shifting has been practiced in Uganda to bridge the gaps in the health workers' numbers since 1918. The objectives of this study were to provide a synthesis of the available evidence on task shifting in Uganda; to establish levels of understanding, perceptions on task shifting and acceptability from the decision and policy makers' perspective; and to provide recommendations on the implications of task shifting for the health of the population in Ugandan and human resource management policy. METHODS: This was a qualitative study. Data collection

Progress in the Mathematical Modelling of Visceral Leishmaniasis.

The leishmaniases comprise a complex of diseases characterized by clinical outcomes that range from self-limiting to chronic, and disfiguring and stigmatizing to life threatening. Diagnostic methods, treatments, and vector and reservoir control options exist, but deciding the most effective interventions requires a quantitative understanding of the population level infection and disease dynamics. The effectiveness of any set of interventions has to be determined within the context of operational conditions, including economic and political commitment. Mathematical models are the best available

From the American Academy of Pediatrics: Policy statement--Tobacco use: a pediatric disease.

Tobacco use and secondhand tobacco-smoke (SHS) exposure are major national and international health concerns. Pediatricians and other clinicians who care for children are uniquely positioned to assist patients and families with tobacco-use prevention and treatment. Understanding the nature and extent of tobacco use and SHS exposure is an essential first step toward the goal of eliminating tobacco use and its consequences in the pediatric population. The next steps include counseling patients and family members to avoid SHS exposures or cease tobacco use; advocacy for policies that protect chil
