Pontine haematoma: successful removal of two cases with review of 22 cases previously described in accessible literature.

Two cases of operative evacuation of pontine haematomas are described in addition to 22 cases reported in the literature. Clinical and neuroradiological findings indicate a brain stem lesion sometimes considered as an inoperable brain stem glioma. Computer assisted tomography todate easily reveals such hematomas. Successful operative results are generally obtained. This diagnosis must be considered when the onset of symptoms is progressive and young people are affected. We describe two young patients with rapidly progressive symptoms. In one case (case 2) the symptoms started after a bee sting

Recovery from primary pontine hemorrhage.

A patient with primary pontine hemorrhage showed typical ocular bobbing with only mild alteration of mental status. Serial CT scans showed resolution of the hemorrhage and correlated with clinical improvement.

Expanding the Neuroimaging Phenotype of Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the accumulation of autof … ami, basal ganglia, posterior limb of the internal capsule, insular/subinsular regions, and ventral pons; and the presence or absence of supratentorial and/or infratentorial atrophy) of patients with genetically proved neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses at our institution. This group consisted of 24 patients who underwent 40 brain MR imaging investigations …

Revisiting intensity normalization in brain [18F]FDG PET: What is reliable in autoimmune encephalitis?

PURPOSE: Data-driven intensity normalization has emerged as an alternative to proportional scaling (PS) and reference-region methods in brain [18F]FDG PET. However, no consensus exists for autoimmune encephalitis (AE), whose variable metabolic patterns and lack of a reliable disease-free reference region complicate normalization. We compared three methods; PS, iterative PS (iPS), and pons-based reference-region (RR) normalization, in patients with definite AE (n = 29, 42 ± 20 years) and healthy controls (HC; n = 53, 46 ± 15 y/o) examined with brain [18F]FDG PET at diagnosis. METHODS: Three se…

Due … hearing loss, and headache diagnosed with a large nasopharyngeal carcinoma invading the cerebellum, pons, medulla oblongata, and cervical spinal cord. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old woman with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) exhibiting extensive intracranial invasion - involving the mesencephalon, cerebellum, pons, medulla oblongata, and cervical spinal cord …

Incidence, Clinician Misdiagnosis Rate, Radiologist Missed Diagnosis Rate, and Lesion Distribution of Isolated Medial Longitudinal Fasciculus Infarction: A Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the incidence, clinician misdiagnosis rate, radiologist missed-diagnosis rate, and lesion distributio … in the caudal midbrain (20.83%, 5/24), the midbrain-pontine junction (4.17%, 1/24), and the rostral pons (45.83%, 11/24). CONCLUSION: IMLFI is a rare clinical entity with a high risk of both clinical misdiagnosis and radiological oversight. Lesions are predominantly located from the caudal midbrain to the rostral pons, highlighting the need for increa …

Symmetric and Profound Monoaminergic Degeneration in Parkinson's Disease with Premotor REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) may precede or follow motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). While over 70 … PDRBD + based on a 10-year duration of premotor RBD. Analysis of FP-CIT binding in the striatum and pons, striatal asymmetry, and striatum-to-pons ratios compared patterns of nigrostriatal and brainstem monoaminergic degeneration. RESULTS: PDRBD + exhibited more severe and symmetrical striatal dopaminergic denervation compared to PDRBD-, with the diff …

Endoscope Assisted Microvascular Decompression for Trigeminal Neuralgia: Surgical Safety and Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The cranial nerve (CN) V and adjacent neurovascular structures are crucial landmarks in microvascular decompression (MVD). MVD o … gical orientation for CN V and surrounding structures. The CN V arises from the lateral part of the pons and runs obliquely upward toward the petrous apex. It has motor roots that leave from pons antero-supero-medial direction to the sensory root. The endoscopic instruments provide perfect visualization with minimal cerebellar retraction during MVD. C …

Exceptional Tumor Regression in Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Post-Radiotherapy: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma represent approximately 10% to 20% of all pediatric central nervous system tumors. Classic brain stem symptoms are cranial nerve deficits, long tract signs, ataxia, alone or in combination. Focal radiotherapy has been the standard of care in patients with diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas with minimum response. Here, we present an unusual case with excellent tumor regression with radiotherapy and good clinical outcome. CASE REPORT A 13-year-old girl presented with headache and imbalance during walking for the past 2-3 months, along with a deviation o…

Postoperative cerebrovascular reserves of the right cerebellum, pons, and vermis were positively associated with visual memory, and postoperative cerebrovascular reserve of the pons was also associated with general memory. CONCLUSIONS: Memory function correlates with executive and intellectual functions in adults wi …
