Pregnancy termination among South African adolescents.

Although African adolescents' risk of undergoing abortion and of related health complications is well-documented, little is known about the procedure's prominence in their lives and the pathways that lead to their reliance upon it. This study investigates abortion dynamics among male and female Zulu adolescents in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. It explores the role of abortion in young people's sexual and reproductive experience, its acceptability, the reasons and likelihood of young people's choosing abortion, and the commonly used methods of pregnancy termination. The study, a rural-urban comp

Anthropological studies among Libyans. Erythrocyte genetic factors, serum haptoglobin phenotypes and anthropometry.

Anthropological studies were done on 1276 Libyans from the Mediterranean cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, and from Sabha southward in The Sahara. The incidences of hemoglobin (Hb)-S and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency were low in the coastal areas and significantly high in Sabha. Hb-C occurred sporadically in Tripoli and Sabha, and was absent from Benghazi in the east. One case of Hb-J Benghazi was noted. There were no sigificant differences in the ABO blood group and Rh0 (D) type distributions in the three localities. G-6-PD gene GdAfrequency was significantly high in Sab

Implementing a Telehealth Perinatal Depression Prevention Program: Perspectives of Rural and Urban Clinical Staff.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are key stakeholders in telehealth intervention implementation. Nurses are also instrumental in the management of perinatal depression, a common complication during pregnancy and postpartum. Telehealth interventions are a promising approach to addressing perinatal depression; however, its successful integration into routine maternal care remains challenging, particularly across diverse clinical settings. This qualitative study examined how registered nurses in the United States and other clinical staff perceived and navigated the implementation of a telehealth perinatal depr

Sudan's complex genetic admixture history drives adaptation to malaria in Sudanese Copts.

Sudan lies at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East, with rich cultural, linguistic, and ecological diversity shaped by a complex demographic history. We present a whole-genome sequencing (WGS) study of Sudanese populations, analyzing high-coverage genomes (~30×) from 125 individuals representing five ethnolinguistic groups across three language families. Our results reveal deep population structure, involving Nilo-Saharan, West Eurasian, Northern African, and Western African ancestral components, as well as signatures of the Arab expansion. We report over one million novel variants, in

Modeling determinants of women's decision-making autonomy on agriculture and household matters in rural Ethiopia: a mixed effects beta regression tree analysis.

Despite existing research on women's decision-making autonomy (WDMA), there remains a significant gap in understanding the complex factors influencing women's autonomy. This study investigated the determinants of WDMA in agriculture and household matters in rural Ethiopia. The study used data from nine rural districts in the Oromia and the former Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples region in Ethiopia. A mixed effects beta regression tree model was used to identify variables impacting WDMA across diverse participant segments. The analysis incorporated various fixed effects, including fam

Unveiling tobacco struggle in rural areas: field insights and experiences from Rajasthan, India.

Tobacco use is a significant public health concern in rural India. This case study was conducted in a village of the Jodhpur district in Rajasthan, India. The high prevalence and patterns of tobacco use among the villagers was identified by a situational analysis in the OPD and through household visits, shopkeeper surveys, focus group discussion with health workers, and by engaging with community members, local leaders, and health workers. A general lack of adherence to Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) rules in public places, schools, and points of sale, as well as a gap in aw

Peer-Assisted Telemedicine for Hepatitis C in People Who Use Drugs: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination requires treating people who use drugs (PWUD), yet <10% of PWUD in the United States access HCV treatment; access is especially limited in rural communities. METHODS: We randomized PWUD with HCV viremia and past 90-day injection drug or nonprescribed opioid use in 7 rural Oregon counties to peer-assisted telemedicine HCV treatment (TeleHCV) versus peer-assisted referral to local providers (enhanced usual care [EUC]). Peers supported screening and pretreatment laboratory evaluation for all participants and facilitated telemedicine visits, medicat

Understanding community health workers' readiness to provide hyperlipidemia-related self-management support in rural Nepal: a biphasic mixed-methods evaluation.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether Female Community Health Volunteers' (FCHVs) can counsel for hyperlipidemia in rural Nepal. METHODS: Using the Health Belief Model, we evaluated FCHV's knowledge, self-efficacy, and barriers to counsel for hyperlipidemia in two phases eleven months apart among 28 FCHVs from rural mid-Western Nepal. In each phase, we conducted four Focused Group Discussions (FGDs), hyperlipidemia-related training and two similar surveys before and after the training. We used inductive and deductive codes for thematic analysis and descriptive statistics for quantitative analysis

Exploring Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Youths' E-Cigarette Resistance Strategies: Implications for Tobacco Product Use Prevention.

This study examined the e-cigarette and vaping resistance strategies used by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youths in rural Hawai'i. Focus groups (N = 17) were conducted in eight geographically dispersed elementary, middle/intermediate, and multilevel schools in low-income communities on Hawai'i Island. Sixty-nine youths (67% NHPI, Mage = 12.5 years) participated in this study. The resistance strategies discussed across the greatest number of groups were "refuse" (saying no), "explain" (providing reasons for vaping refusal), "avoid" (avoiding people or places where e-cigarettes we
