Association between temporomandibular disorders and abnormal head postures.

This study examines the possible correlation between the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and different head postures in the frontal and sagittal planes using photographs of undergraduate students in the School of Dentistry at the Universidade de Brasília - UnB, Brazil. In this nonrandomized, cross-sectional study, the diagnoses of TMD were made with the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC)/TMD axis I. The craniovertebral angle was used to evaluate forward head posture in the sagittal plane, and the interpupillary line was used to measure head tilt in the frontal plane. The measur…

Classification in postural style based on stochastic process modeling.

We address the statistical challenge of classifying subjects as hemiplegic, vestibular or normal based on complex trajectories obtained through two experimental protocols designed to evaluate potential deficits in postural control. The classification procedure involves a dimension reduction step where the complex trajectories are summarized by finite-dimensional summary measures based on a stochastic process model for a real-valued trajectory. This allows us to retrieve from the trajectories information relative to their temporal dynamic. A leave-one-out evaluation yields a 79% performance of

The influence of oculomotor tasks on postural control in dyslexic children.

Dual task is known to affect postural stability in children. We explored the effect of visual tasks on postural control in thirty dyslexic children. A selected group of thirty chronological age-matched non-dyslexic children (mean age: 9.92 ± 0.35 years) and a group of thirty reading age-matched non-dyslexic children (mean reading age: 7.90 ± 0.25 years) were chosen for comparison. All children underwent ophthalmologic and optometric evaluation. Eye movements were recorded by a video-oculography system (EyeBrain® T2) and postural sway was recorded simultaneously by a force platform (TechnoConep

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is associated with many symptoms including orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, palpitations, and cognitive dysfunction. Treatment, which typically consists of exercise, increased dietary sodium and fluids, compression garments, and medications for orthostatic intolerance, frequently produces unsatisfactory results. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old woman who presented with a 6-year history of severe fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, heat intolerance, cognitive dysfunction, and diffuse pain. She had previously injured her jaw on an obsta

Orthotic correction of postural unleveling in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors describe the case of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis who was treated with orthotic devices for postural unleveling. The patient described specific pre-existing postural problems, both static and dynamic, that had been present for many years. A unilateral 9-mm gel heel lift was used, followed by custom-molded orthotic devices that incorporated the heel lift. The patient reported immediate resolution of these symptoms after orthotic treatment, as well as increased functionality and satisfaction in activities of daily living, which coincided with the leveling of his posture. The…

Effect of airway control by glottal structures on postural stability.

Maintenance of upright posture involves complex neuromotor processes that include control of thoracic and abdominal pressures. Control of airflow by glottal structures is a primary determinant of thoracic pressure and may have a role in control of postural stability. This study aimed to investigate the effect of modulation of airway control on upright postural stability during postural perturbations. Standing balance was gently perturbed in the sagittal plane during 7 breathing/voicing tasks that ranged from completely closed (breath-hold), to partially opened (voicing) or completely open (sig…

[Mechanisms of formation and a diagnostic algorithm of postural disorders in stroke].

Three hundreds and twenty-nine patients with stroke were examined. In the acute stage of stroke, disorders of postural balance dynamic disturbances were detected in 85% of patients, in a half of patients disorders of static balance were found either. Four variants of postural balance disorders were singled out: I -- afferent, with a prevalence of sensory deficiency, II -- efferent, with a prevalence of pyramidal and cerebellar symptoms, III -- integrative, with a domination of cognitive impairments, IV -- psychogenic with affective disorders. It was found that different variants of balance dis

Implications of a vasodilatory human monoclonal autoantibody in postural hypotension.

Functional autoantibodies to the autonomic receptors are increasingly recognized in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. To date, no human activating monoclonal autoantibodies to these receptors have been available. In this study, we describe for the first time a β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR)-activating monoclonal autoantibody (C5F2) produced from the lymphocytes of a patient with idiopathic postural hypotension. C5F2, an IgG3 isotype, recognizes an epitope in the N terminus of the second extracellular loop (ECL2) of β2AR. Surface plasmon resonance analysis revealed high binding aff

Postural effects on intracranial pressure: modeling and clinical evaluation.

The physiological effect of posture on intracranial pressure (ICP) is not well described. This study defined and evaluated three mathematical models describing the postural effects on ICP, designed to predict ICP at different head-up tilt angles from the supine ICP value. Model I was based on a hydrostatic indifference point for the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system, i.e., the existence of a point in the system where pressure is independent of body position. Models II and III were based on Davson's equation for CSF absorption, which relates ICP to venous pressure, and postulated that gravitatio…

The effect of a cognitive task on the postural control of dyslexic children.

We explore the influence of a secondary cognitive task on concurrent postural control in dyslexic children. Seventeen children with dyslexia (DYS) were compared with thirteen non-dyslexic children (NDYS). Postural control was recorded in Standard Romberg (SR) and Tandem Romberg (TR) conditions while children, in separate sessions, have to fixate on a target and name simple objects appearing consecutively on a computer screen. The surface, the length and the mean speed of the center of pressure were analyzed; the percentage of correct responses to the cognitive task was also measured. DYS are s

Effects of norepinephrine reuptake inhibition on postural tachycardia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder of chronic orthostatic intolerance accompanied by excessive orthostatic tachycardia. Patients with POTS commonly have comorbid conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, or fibromyalgia that are treated with medications that inhibit the norepinephrine reuptake transporter (NRI). NRI medications can increase sympathetic nervous system tone, which may increase heart rate (HR) and worsen symptoms in POTS patients. We sought to determine whether NRI with atomoxetine increases standing tachycardia or worsen

The effects of repetitive haemarthrosis on postural balance in children with haemophilia.

Sensory information from visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems is necessary to control posture and balance. Impairment in proprioception due to repetitive joints bleeding may lead to a deficit in postural balance which, in turn, leads to high joint stress and risk of bleeding recurrence. Despite the increase in attention in this field during the past few years, the data concerning to how bleeds can affect postural control in children with haemophilia (CWH) remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the postural balance in CWH. Twenty CWH Haemophilia Group (HG) and 20 age-matched child…

Tai chi and postural stability in patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease have substantially impaired balance, leading to diminished functional ability and an increased risk of falling. Although exercise is routinely encouraged by health care providers, few programs have been proven effective. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled trial to determine whether a tailored tai chi program could improve postural control in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. We randomly assigned 195 patients with stage 1 to 4 disease on the Hoehn and Yahr staging scale (which ranges from 1 to 5, with higher stages indicatin

Postural instability and cognitive dysfunction in early Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is one of the most disabling features of Parkinson's disease, usually occurring in late and advanced stages. The aim of this study was to investigate the postural performance of early-stage de novo Parkinson's disease patients with no clinical postural instability using computerized dynamic posturography. We sought to understand the relationship between postural sway and disease severity and the relationship between postural instability quantitatively measured by computerized dynamic posturography and cognitive impairment in early-stage Parkinson's disease pati

Effect of exercise-induced fatigue on postural control of the knee.

Muscle fatigue is associated with reduced power output and work capacity of the skeletal muscle. Fatigue-induced impairments in muscle function are believed to be a potential cause of increased injury rates during the latter stages of athletic competition and often occur during unexpected perturbations. However the effect of fatigue on functionally relevant, full body destabilizing perturbations has not been investigated. This study examines the effect of muscle fatigue on the activation of the quadriceps and hamstrings to fast, full body perturbations evoked by a moveable platform. Surface el
