OBJECTIVES: Antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) is characterized by autoantibodies to aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (anti-synthetase) and it is frequently associated with interstitial lung disease. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the prevalence and characteristics of the anti-synthetase positive subpopulation among idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs) and to clarify the importance of screening for these antibodies.

The eradication of Helicobacter pylori often leads to platelet recovery in patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (cITP). Although this clinical observation suggests the involvement of H. pylori, little is known about the pathogenesis of cITP. We initially examined the effect of H. pylori eradication on platelet counts in 20 adult Japanese cITP patients. The nucleotide excision repair (NER) protein ERCC1 is part of a functional complex, which harbors in addition the repair correcting activities of ERCC4, ERCC11 and human XPF. Six plaque-purified strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (Karp, Gilliam, Kato, JC472B, TA716, and TA763) that fall into three categories of virulence for mice were compared by several parameters.
