Evaluation of Predictive Models of Inpatient Nursing Workloads.

The efficient allocation of medical personnel to clinical care requires adapting to fluctuating requirements. Nursing workloads at hospital wards depend not just on patient numbers (occupancy), but are also associated with individual features that are increasingly available in Electronic Health Records (EHRs). These EHRs thus promise to support human resource management with automated predictions of patient-specific nursing needs. To evaluate EHR-based workload estimates, we trained Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting (GB) models in an anonymous dataset of 27,178 inpatient cases and 53 at

Safety-oriented and explainable machine learning for KSI crash risk prediction: Evidence from the United Kingdom.

Road traffic crashes pose a serious public safety challenge, particularly due to fatal and serious injuries. Although machine learning (ML) has been widely used for crash severity prediction, many studies remain accuracy-oriented and insufficiently address class imbalance, decision thresholds, and probabilistic reliability. This study proposes a safety-oriented and explainable ML framework for predicting killed or seriously injured (KSI) crashes using nationwide United Kingdom traffic accident data from 2020-2024. Crash severity is reformulated as a binary classification task distinguishing sl

Comparative evaluation of machine-learning algorithms for early detection of metritis in dairy cows.

Metritis is a common postpartum uterine disease in dairy cows that impairs fertility, reduces milk yield, increases culling risk, and causes substantial economic loss. This study aimed to develop and externally validate machine learning models for early metritis prediction using routinely recorded calving and reproductive data from commercial Holstein dairy herds. The analytical unit was the calving-event record, so individual cows could contribute repeated observations across lactations and calendar years. A retrospective development dataset included 92,662 calving-event records collected fro

Enhancing Heart Disease Prediction Through Cluster-Visualized Distributed Machine Learning Paradigms for Secure Healthcare.

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, creating an urgent need for accurate and scalable predictive systems that enable early diagnosis and timely clinical intervention. Traditional machine learning approaches often struggle to efficiently process large-scale medical datasets and lack interpretability, limiting their usefulness for supporting clinical decision-making. To address these challenges, this study proposes a Cluster Visualized Distributed Machine Learning framework for heart disease prediction. The framework incorporates two distributed algorithms: Cl

An explainable artificial intelligence framework for ischemic heart disease prediction using enhanced squirrel search feature selection.

Clinical decision-making depends on the ability to anticipate ischemic heart disease (IHD) accurately and interpretably. Despite their excellent accuracy, machine learning models are not often accepted in medical applications due to their black-box nature. To diagnose IHD, this study suggests an Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) architecture that combines explainable models with the Enhanced Squirrel Search Optimization (ESSO) method for feature selection. The proposed Enhanced Squirrel Search Optimization (ESSO) introduces adaptive exploration mechanisms to efficiently identify an opt

Robust adaptive fault-tolerant learning control for human height-weight prediction based on DNN.

In this paper, a distributed robust adaptive confined fault-tolerant optimal control method based on deep neural networks is proposed, aiming to solve the complexity and uncertainty problems in human height and weight prediction. Note that the term 'control' in this work refers to feedback regulation of the iterative learning/optimization dynamics of the predictor (iteration domain), rather than controlling the physical time evolution of human height/weight. In the field of public security technology, accurate prediction of individual physiological characteristics has important application val

Cross-study interpretable machine learning for prediction of NH3 and H2S emissions and identification of operational windows during composting.

Accurate prediction of NH3 and H2S emissions is essential for odor-risk control and process management during composting, but remains challenging because emissions are driven by nonlinear, stage-dependent, and interacting operating conditions. In this study, we developed an interpretable cross-study machine-learning framework for NH3 and H2S prediction using routinely monitored composting variables. A harmonized dataset from 46 published studies provided 542 NH3 and 496 H2S observations after quality control and predictor screening. Five algorithms were benchmarked under study-wise grouped val

Tactical vs. strategic: An adaptable framework for horizon-dependent dengue forecasting using data-driven approaches with serotype and climate covariates in Bangladesh.

Dengue remains a major public health problem in endemic regions, including Bangladesh. Forecasting algorithms relying on climatic variables may not capture epidemiological information such as dengue serotype patterns. This study proposes a horizon-dependent dengue forecasting framework and applies it to Bangladesh. This pipeline included temporal, meteorological, demographic, and epidemiological covariates in a district-panel pipeline and compares classical, machine-learning, and deep-learning algorithms using aggregate, horizon-wise, regime-wise, outbreak-detection, and uncertainty metrics. Multi-model machine learning framework for prediction of greenhouse gas emissions during composting of organic solid waste.

Accurate prediction and regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during composting are essential for mitigating global warming. Herein, two multi-model machine learning frameworks were developed based on Gradient Boosting Regression, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Extra Trees Regression algorithms. In particular, the modular multi-model demonstrated superior performance in predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, achieving R2 values of 0.9662, 0.9729, and 0.9051, respectively. The stacking ensemble model also exhibited high accuracy in cumulative emission prediction (R2 = 0.9278). SHapley A

Can artificial intelligence bridge critical gaps in hypertension prediction and risk assessment in low- and middle-income countries? A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: According to the WHO, as of 2025, 1.4 billion adults between the ages 30-79 were living with hypertension, with approximately two-thirds of that number from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). By 2025, the number of individuals with hypertension is expected to have reached 1.5 billion, with sub-Saharan Africa alone projected to have 74.7 million cases. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated the potential to improve the accuracy of risk assessment tools for predicting, managing and diagnosing diseases before they escalate. This paper aims to conduct a sc

Predicting Postpartum Depression Using Imbalance-Aware Machine Learning.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects nearly one in five mothers, yet many cases remain undetected. This study demonstrates the value of a leakage-resistant, rigorously designed machine learning pipeline for early prediction using psychosocial data from 1,430 women during pregnancy. Concept-level feature harmonization addressed data artifacts, while repeated group-aware cross-validation, calibration, and recall-oriented thresholding ensured robust evaluation. Class imbalance was handled using weighting and SMOTE. Models showed strong performance (ROC-AUC: 0.762-0.801; PR-AUC: 0.400-0.490), with

Any-step dynamics model improves future predictions for offline reinforcement learning via hierarchical roll-out.

Offline reinforcement learning constrains policy optimization within a given dataset, avoiding the high costs and unpredictable risks associated with online sampling in the real world. Model-based approaches provide a promising direction for offline reinforcement learning, as extensive policy explorations and evaluations can happen within the data-driven dynamics model, transcending the limitations imposed by the dataset boundaries. However, accurately predicting long-horizon sequential steps in the learned dynamics model remains a significant challenge. Model roll-out in previous methods reli

Exploring quantum frontiers in protein structure prediction: techniques, challenges, and opportunities.

Protein folding is governed by the principle of free energy minimization, where a protein's native tertiary structure corresponds to the global minimum on an energy landscape shaped by quantum mechanical interactions such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and electron delocalization. Despite significant advances in template-based modeling (TBM), ab-initio simulations, and deep learning approaches, classical methods continue to face challenges due to the exponential complexity of the conformational search space and the approximations involved in modeling molecular interactions.
