Fear of movement in pre-operative patients with a lumbar stenosis and or herniated disc: factor structure of the Tampa scale for kinesiophobia.

The presence of fear of movement is related to higher disability rates in several patient groups. The purpose of this study was first to analyze fear of movement and the relation with pain and disability in pre-operative patients with low back pain and radiculopathy and secondly to analyze the factor structure of the Dutch version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK). The TSK and Pain Disability Index (PDI) were assessed in 128 patients. An explorative factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the TSK were performed using Structural Equation Models (SEMs). Fear of

Age, thyroglobulin levels and ATA risk stratification predict 10-year survival rate of differentiated thyroid cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most common of endocrine cancers. Many studies have focused on recurrence-free survival of DTC patients, however, few studies have addressed overall survival rates. Given its very good prognosis, estimating overall or long-term survival in patients with DTC seems rational. So far, neither the impact of pre- and post-ablation thyroglobulin, nor that of initial American Thyroid Association (ATA) risk stratification on long-term disease-specific survival, have been sufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the

Ovarian reserve in an Egyptian cohort with end-stage kidney disease on hemodialysis and after successful kidney transplantation: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Women with chronic kidney disease commonly have menstrual irregularities and fertility abnormalities. Antimüllerian hormone (AMH) and antral follicle count (AFC) are well-recognized indicators of ovarian reserve. AIMS: To assess AMH level and total AFC in women who are on hemodialysis and after successful kidney transplantation (KTx). METHODS: Sixty women with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on regular hemodialysis were included in this study with 20 patients of them were going to have renal transplant. Fifty age-matched healthy females were enrolled as control. Serum AMH level w

Restoration of the Spinous Process Following Muscle-Preserving Posterior Lumbar Decompression via Sagittal Splitting of the Spinous Process.

BACKGROUND: In lumbar spinal stenosis, spinous process-splitting decompression has demonstrated good clinical outcomes with preservation of the posterior ligamentous complex and paraspinal muscles in comparison to conventional laminectomy, but the radiological consequence and clinical impact of the split spinous processes have not been fully understood. METHODS: Seventy-three patients who underwent spinous process-splitting decompression were included. The bone union rate and pattern were evaluated by computed tomography performed 6-18 months after surgery and compared among subgroups divided

Esophageal motor disorders are frequent during pre and post lung transplantation. Can they influence lung rejection?

BACKGROUND: lung transplantation (LTx) is a viable option for most patients with end-stage lung diseases. Esophageal motor disorders (EMD) are frequent in candidates for LTx, but there is very little data about changes in esophageal motility post-LTx. AIM: the aim of our study was to assess esophageal motor disorders by high resolution manometry (HRM) both pre-LTx and six months post-LTx in patients with and without organ rejection. STUDY: HRM (Manoscan®) was performed in 57 patients both pre-LTx and six months post-LTx. HRM plots were analyzed according to the Chicago classification 3.0. R

Discordance in Preoperative and Postoperative Histopathology of Sinonasal Tumors.

Background Head and neck surgical pathology has been shown to be prone to histopathologic diagnostic error that can adversely impact patient care due to inappropriate management. Sinonasal tumors, in particular, present a diagnostic challenge given the relative rarity and diversity in histology and thus may have higher rates of discordant histology. Objective The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of discrepancy between preoperative and postoperative diagnoses of sinonasal tumors. Methods Retrospective chart review was performed on 52 patients treated for sinonasal tumors between J

A case series of patients change in mobility following a hip fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures are common in the elderly population. It is currently believed that patients can expect to lose a level of mobility following a hip fracture. The aim of this study was to compare the pre- and post-treatment mobility of patients treated in our institution who had suffered a fracture neck of femur and identify the factors that could predict pre-operatively those patients who would suffer a deterioration in mobility after treatment. METHODS: Patients admitted to a large UK teaching hospital with a surgically treated neck of femur fracture were included between 2 April

Blood Flow Changes in Subsynovial Connective Tissue on Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonography in Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Before and After Surgical Decompression.

OBJECTIVES: Although qualitative alteration of the subsynovial connective tissue in the carpal tunnel is considered to be one of the most important factors in the pathophysiologic mechanisms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), little information is available about the microcirculation in the subsynovial connective tissue in patients with CTS. The aims of this study were to use contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (US) to evaluate blood flow in the subsynovial connective tissue proximal to the carpal tunnel in patients with CTS before and after carpal tunnel release. METHODS: The study included 15 v

Serum C-reactive protein and procalcitonin kinetics in patients undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The sensitivity and the specificity of different methods to detect periprosthetic infection have been questioned. The current study aimed to investigate the kinetics of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) in patients undergoing uncomplicated elective total hip arthroplasty (THA), to provide a better interpretation of their levels in noninfectious inflammatory reaction. METHODS: A total of 51 patients were included. Serum CRP and PCT concentrations were obtained before surgery, on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th postoperative days and after discharge on the 14th and 30th days an

Objective quantification of pre- and postphonosurgery vocal fold vibratory characteristics using high-speed videoendoscopy and a harmonic waveform model.

PURPOSE: The model-based quantitative analysis of high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) data at a low frame rate of 2,000 frames per second was assessed for its clinical adequacy. Stepwise regression was employed to evaluate the HSV parameters using harmonic models and their relationships to the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Also, the model-based HSV parameters were compared with those using conventional analysis techniques. METHOD: Eight pairs of HSV recordings of vocal folds before and after surgery for benign lesions were investigated. Five glottal area waveform features-fundamental frequency (F0)
