METHODS: Sixteen pairs of eyes from donors aged 1 to 107 years were treated with atropine or pilocarpine and then processed for light microscopy. Seven pairs were analyzed for treatment effects, including morphometric measurements of muscle dimensions, muscle fiber group area, and the percentage of connective tissue.

Multifocal contact lenses are increasingly popular interventions for controlling myopia. This study presents the short-term effects of multifocal contact lenses on foveal and peripheral vision. The MiSight contact lenses designed to inhibit myopia progression and the 1-Day Acuvue Moist contact lenses designed for presbyopia were investigated. Defocus increased visual field contrast thresholds for stimuli equal to or smaller than Goldmann perimeter target III (26 min arc diameter). According to Paragon Vision Sciences (Mesa, AZ), an additional 50,000 Americans become presbyopic each day. There are many contact lens options available to help these patients meet their visual needs in the workplace and for recreational and social activities. Although technology still requires some compromise on the part of many patients, constant advances in materials and designs should enable even greater numbers of presbyopes to enjoy the freedom of functioning without glasses in the years to come.
