Awareness and perceptions of clinical guidelines for the diagnostics and treatment of severe behavioural problems in children across Europe: A qualitative survey with academic experts.

BACKGROUND: Severe behavioural problems (SBPs1) in childhood are highly prevalent, impair functioning, and predict negative outcomes later in life. Over the last decade, clinical practice guidelines for SBPs have been developed across Europe to facilitate the translation of scientific evidence into clinical practice. This study outlines the results of an investigation into academic experts' perspectives on the current prevalence, implementation, and utility of clinical guidelines for SBPs in children aged 6-12 across Europe. METHODS: An online semi-structured questionnaire was completed by 28

Strategies for characterizing complex phenotypes and environments: general and specific family environmental predictors of young adult tobacco dependence, alcohol use disorder, and co-occurring problems.

BACKGROUND: Defining phenotypes in studies of tobacco and alcohol misuse is difficult because of the complexity of these behaviors and their strong association with each other and with other problem behaviors. The present paper suggests a strategy for addressing this issue by conceptualizing and partitioning variance in phenotypes into either general or substance/behavior-specific. The paper also applies the general or substance/behavior-specific conceptualization to environmental predictors of tobacco and alcohol misuse and other problem behaviors. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Seattle S…

Tell Me A Story: Promoting resiliency in military children with a bibliotherapy intervention.

PURPOSE: Research demonstrates the complex effect of the military lifestyle on children of military members. Problem behaviors can manifest in military children as young as 6 years old (eg, physical violence). Some military children have better outcomes (ie, resiliency). These differences in outcomes are not fully understood; literature agrees that parent's interaction with their children predicts resiliency. Nurses can utilize resiliency interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of families. Tell Me A Story (TMAS), a bibliotherapy intervention, role models for parents reading with the…

Stability of the effects of a social competence training program for children with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder: a 10-month follow-up.

The stability and effectiveness of the Treatment Program for Children with Aggressive Behavior (THAV) in terms of reducing behavioral problems in children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) were examined at a 10-month follow-up (FU). A total of 76 families and their children (boys aged 6-12 years), who previously participated in a randomized controlled trial comparing THAV with an active control group, took part in the 10-month FU assessment. Outcome measures were rated by parents and included the evaluation of child aggressive behavior, prosocial behavior, prob

Collaborative reasoning and problem-solving in early childhood.

A core aspect of human intelligence is the ability to reason. Recently, the social dimension of reasoning has been emphasized such that reasoning enables people to justify their beliefs/proposals to collectively solve problems, in which the goal of the participants is to reach the decision that provides most benefit to all. An important debate in the literature is whether collaborative reasoning leads to good/optimal decisions. Here, we contrast these traditional and social views on reasoning and review the evidence on whether individuals benefit from collective reasoning in a special populati

Experiential Learning to Enhance Global Health Collaboration and Student Opportunity.

Students often seek opportunities to enrich their classroom learning. Providing students the chance to engage in research studies or global health projects allows for experiential enrichment. However, the impact on partners and partner sites, financial implications, and equity of student opportunity, as well as the logistical burden potentially placed on multiple parties, all need to be considered. If challenges are minimized, students can make meaningful contributions to projects, be a catalyst for partner engagement, and allow for formative learning.

A mixed-methods study of parents' social connectedness in a group-based parenting program in low-income communities.

Group-based parent training (PT) is an evidence-based approach for strengthening parenting skills and reducing child behavior problems. However, there has been little research on the social connectedness (SC) formed among PT participants, particularly in low-income communities where parents may be more socially isolated. This study describes SC formed among parents in a group-based PT program implemented in their children's school and its association with changes in child behavior. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data collection occurred between 2020 and 2022. Parents (n = 97) complet

Comparing PTSD symptom networks in type I vs. type II trauma survivors.

Background: Network analysis has gained increasing attention as a new framework to study complex associations between symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A number of studies have been published to investigate symptom networks on different sets of symptoms in different populations, and the findings have been inconsistent. Objective: We aimed to extend previous research by testing whether differences in PTSD symptom networks can be found in survivors of type I (single event; sudden and unexpected, high levels of acute threat) vs. type II (repeated and/or protracted; anticipated) t

Inhibitory Control, Conduct Problems, and Callous Unemotional Traits in Children with ADHD and Typically Developing Children.

Compared children with CP/ADHD, CPCU/ADHD, ADHD-only, and controls on two measures of inhibitory control: a Simon/flanker task that measured response selection and a stop signal task that measured response inhibition. Results showed: (a) ADHD was associated with both measures of inhibitory control; (b) control children had better overall performance and ADHD-only had worse response selection than the CP groups; and (c) children with CPCU/ADHD had better response inhibition than children with ADHD-only or CP/ADHD. Results suggest inhibitory control dysfunction is associated with ADHD rather tha

Longitudinal Associations Between Parenting and Child Behaviour Problems and the Moderating Effect of Child Callous Unemotional Traits in Foster and Biological Families.

The goals of the current study were to examine (i) differences in parenting between foster and biological parents, (ii) the longitudinal associations with children's internalising and externalising problems and iii) the potential moderation of these by children's callous-unemotional traits (CU traits). Data from 86 foster children (M = 4.44 years, male = 48%) and 148 biological children (M = 3.69 years, male = 49%) with their families were analysed in a longitudinal study with three measurement times. Parenting behaviour did not significantly differ between the foster and biological family gro

Thinking hierarchically about posttraumatic response: Commentary on Lehinger et al. (2022).

Lehinger et al.'s (2022) study on the associations between posttraumatic stress symptoms, posttraumatic cognitions, and alcohol use in sexual assault survivors extends previous research on posttraumatic response to sexual trauma. The study is useful for these purposes but it also raises other interesting questions about the nature of posttraumatic response and the structure of psychopathology more generally. In this commentary, we describe Lehinger et al.'s (2022) study and its findings and discuss their potential relevance for emerging transdiagnostic, hierarchical models of psychopathology.

Behavioural disinhibition in frontotemporal dementia investigated within an ecological framework.

Disinhibition is a core symptom in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) particularly affecting the daily lives of both patients and caregivers. Yet, characterisation of inhibition disorders is still unclear and management options of these disorders are limited. Questionnaires currently used to investigate behavioural disinhibition do not differentiate between several subtypes of disinhibition, encompass observation biases and lack of ecological validity. In the present work, we explored disinhibition in an original semi-ecological situation, by distinguishing three categories of

Utility of the Limited Prosocial Emotions Specifier in Preschoolers With Conduct Problems.

This study examined the clinical utility of the "Limited Prosocial Emotions" (LPE) specifier (i.e., prevalence rates, group differences, and predictive utility) in a high-risk preschool sample (N = 109, M age = 4.77) presenting with conduct problems (CPs; n = 59). First, LPE prevalence rates ranged from 7.7% to 89.8%. Next, few group differences were observed between with CP-only and CP+LPE; youth with CP+LPE differed from youth with CP-only on callous-unemotional (CU) traits and verbal ability, but not on externalizing or internalizing psychopathology, nor on parenting experiences. Traumatic Brain Injury and Treatment of Behavioral Health Conditions.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neurological condition that results from an external force altering normal brain function, whether temporarily or permanently. A concussion is one type of TBI. TBIs vary greatly in severity, which concomitantly creates tremendous variability in their manifestation. The fingerprint of TBI is damage to the frontal areas of the brain, which, with sufficient magnitude, results in impairment of a person's ability to regulate cognition, emotion, and behavior. These consequences of TBI make recognition in the context of treating behavioral health conditions of

Statutory Rape: Case Characteristics When Offenders are Younger Than 21 Years of Age Versus Older.

Statutory rape laws are intended to protect adolescents from harm as a result of sexual activity with older individuals. In this pursuit, many, but far from all, states' statutory rape laws differentiate younger and older offenders. In effect, many of these states differentiate offenders who are 21 and older from those who are under 21. It is unknown, however, whether and how the dynamics of statutory rape vary depending on the age of the offender. To explore the contribution of offender age to the dynamics of statutory rape, data were collected from the records of 105 statutory rape cases ref

Negative core affect and employee silence: How differences in activation, cognitive rumination, and problem-solving demands matter.

Employees can help to improve organizational performance by sharing ideas, suggestions, or concerns about practices, but sometimes they keep silent because of the experience of negative affect. Drawing and expanding on this stream of research, this article builds a theoretical rationale based on core affect and cognitive appraisal theories to describe how differences in affect activation and boundary conditions associated with cognitive rumination and cognitive problem-solving demands can explain employee silence. Results of a diary study conducted with professionals from diverse organizations

["Search strategy" in solving verbal logic problems by schizophrenic patients].

In a solution of logical tasks of a deductive character by normals and patients with paranoid schizophrenia, the latter find solutions in less than half of the cases. They attract a great amount of questions, the character of which are more concrete with an accent on "weak" signs rather than general. The patients do not display adequate plans in solving such tasks, the search of the semantic field is narrow. Assumingly there is a disorder of the structure and ierarchy of information kept in the brain.
