A prospective study of otitis media with effusion (OME) in both adults and children has been carried out. 75 new adult patients were seen during a 4-year period. Of these, 13 had associated diseases which could reasonably be considered to have been a cause of their effusion. Over a 2-year period, 192 new children with OME were seen. In 1982-1983 a random sample of 1486 people aged 65 years and above was generated from general practitioner lists; 1070 were interviewed in the community using the Geriatric Mental State and a Social History questionnaire. In 1981, we designed a protocol to treat displaced supracondylar fractures using a modified technique of closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. After the fracture was internally fixed, intraoperative anteroposterior (AP) radiographs of each distal humerus were compared. The reduction and pinning was accepted only if the radiographs demonstrated that Baumann's angle was < or = 4 degrees of that on the normal side. A cohort of infants of birthweight < or = 1700 g studied prospectively for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has been reviewed at 6 months corrected age and the findings related to the neonatal data. The overall incidence of strabismus was 6.4% (30/468), rising from 3.1% (7/229) without ROP to 29.2% (7/24) with stage 3. A prospective study of community-acquired pneumonia in Hong Kong was carried out between January and December, 1988. Ninety adults (57 male) with a mean age of 57.3 years were admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital with community-acquired pneumonia. The etiologic diagnosis of pneumonia was made in 37 cases (41 percent). Pneumococcal infection was diagnosed in 11 patients (12 percent). The same number of patients had pulmonary tuberculosis presenting as acute pneumonia. A prospective study of 13 patients with traumatic parotid fistulae or sialoceles showed that 54% resolved on conservative management within a 3 week period. Those that did not were treated by internal surgical drainage with uniform success, although care had to be taken with the catheter placement. No factors predictive of those cases requiring operative drainage other than failure of conservative management were found.

Two hundred two hydatidiform moles were classified by pathologic features and ploidy into partial or complete moles. Prophylactic amnioinfusion was assessed in term and post-dates pregnancies with decreased amniotic fluid volume. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: amnioinfusion with warmed saline solution, room-temperature saline, or control. Fourteen consecutive patients with motor neuron disease were studied during a period of one year. Seven patients were in the second decade of life, with eleven below the age of 40 years. Antral biopsy samples were taken from 147 patients undergoing gastroscopy. Campylobacter pylori was cultivated from 100 of these patients. C. pylori was isolated from 76% of the specimens showing any degree of histologic gastritis, but from only 11% of specimens with completely normal histology. It was investigated whether Hemoccult-II test (H-II) could reduce the number of colonic examinations in patients with the irritable bowel syndrome, with normal rigid proctoscopic findings. Thirty-two knee and 23 sternoclavicular joints from 35 subjects with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome were examined prospectively at necropsy. There were two instances of opportunistic infectious arthritis: one caused by Staphylococcus aureus, the other by Sporothrix schenckii. In five other subjects, para-articular bone was infiltrated by granulomatous or neoplastic sequelae of the human immunodeficiency virus infection. There was no immunohistochemical (p24 antigen) or other evidence for existence of a specific acquired immunodeficiency syndrome arthritis.

Sixty cases of infective endocarditis were studied prospectively between May, 1985 and December, 1988. There were 40 males and 20 females with a mean age of 28 years. Endocarditis was found on normal valves in 13 patients, on rheumatic valves in 30, on congenital lesions in 8, on prosthetic valves in 4 and on mitral valve prolapse in 5 cases. A prospective study has been undertaken to assess the relative merits of one-piece polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and poly 2 hydroxyethylmethacrylate "hydrogel" (P-HEMA) lenses in uncomplicated eyes after uncomplicated surgery. Cerebral computed tomography (CT) was performed before and after right-sided electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in 40 patients aged 26-87 years with major affective disorders. Nine patients with a concomitant definite or possible non-acute organic brain disorder were included.
