A ligase chain reaction (LCR) assay was developed to distinguish cowpox virus from other Orthopoxvirus species. The LCR targets two adjacent adenosine residues which are only present in the A-type inclusion protein gene (ATI-gene) of cowpox virus. Gastric acid plays an important pathogenetic role in peptic ulcer disease and reflux oesophagitis. Native polyacrylamide gels of extracellular proteins produced by several Streptomyces isolates grown with suberin were assayed in situ for esterase activity. Two pathogenic isolates of Streptomyces scabies from different geographical regions were found to produce a similar esterase activity that was not produced by nonpathogenic strains. The technique of microwave irradiation, whereby enzymes are inactivated within milliseconds, was employed to accurately determine the in vivo acetylcholine (ACh) concentration in the iris-ciliary body (ICB).
