The impact of shame on health-related quality of life among HIV-positive adults with a history of childhood sexual abuse.

Childhood sexual abuse is prevalent among people living with HIV, and the experience of shame is a common consequence of childhood sexual abuse and HIV infection. This study examined the role of shame in health-related quality of life among HIV-positive adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. Data from 247 HIV-infected adults with a history of childhood sexual abuse were analyzed. Hierarchical linear regression was conducted to assess the impact of shame regarding both sexual abuse and HIV infection, while controlling for demographic, clinical, and psychosocial factors. In bivariat

Children with reported histories of sexual abuse: utilizing multiple perspectives to understand clinical and psychosocial profiles.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examines multiple empirically based perspectives (i.e., child, caregiver, and clinician) of behavior and functioning as they contribute to the clinical and psychosocial profile of children (aged 5 to 17.5 years) with reported histories of sexual abuse. METHOD: A large, multi-site data set of children referred into Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services both with and without reported histories of sexual abuse, was examined. Seven hundred and fifty-nine children with a reported history of sexual abuse were compared to 2722 without such a history on caregiver

Heterogeneity in factors associated with personal recovery: A finite mixture regression analysis in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have identified multiple factors associated with personal recovery in schizophrenia, including clinical symptoms, functioning, cognitive abilities, and psychosocial resources. However, findings regarding the strength and direction of these associations have been inconsistent, suggesting that different association structures may exist within the population. This study examined whether such inconsistencies reflect latent classes with different association structures underlying personal recovery. METHODS: Participants were 101 individuals with schizophrenia or schizoa

Family functioning and caring for a child with acquired brain injury: a systematic review and thematic analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric acquired brain injuries (pABIs) broadly impact the child and family, affecting emotional functioning, relationships, and daily life. Given the absence of a comprehensive overview of the impact of pABI on family functioning, this review aims to examine this issue and propose a conceptual model to guide clinical care. METHODS: A systematic search of CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PTSDpubs for articles published January 2013-November 2024 was performed. Eligible articles focused on children (0-18 years) with pABI, examined family functioning, w

Validation of hierarchical taxonomy in a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Quantitatively derived dimensional models of psychopathology enjoy overwhelming empirical support, and a large and active community of psychopathology researchers has been establishing an empirically based dimensional hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology (or HiTOP) as a strong candidate replacement for the current categorical classification system. The hierarchical nature of this taxonomy implies that different levels of resolution are likely to be optimal for different purposes. Our aim was to identify which level of detail is likely to provide optimal validity and explanatory

A Bridge Too Far: Individuals With Regular and Increasing Very Heavy Alcohol Consumption Cannot be Considered as Maintaining "Recovery" Due to Toxicity and Intoxication-related Risks.

The concept of "recovery" from alcohol use disorders (AUD) has garnered increasing scientific interest in recent years including attempts to explicate and measure its presumed component parts. In general, there is consensus that "recovery" should not be solely about abstinence or quantity-frequency measures of alcohol consumption and should include measures of functioning. Some researchers have taken an even more radical step, however, to suggest that psychosocial functioning should be the sine qua non defining feature of "recovery," seemingly irrespective of how much one drinks; as such, peop…

Prevalence of psychological trauma and association with current health and functioning in a sample of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected Tanzanian adults.

BACKGROUND: In high income nations, traumatic life experiences such as childhood sexual abuse are much more common in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) than the general population, and trauma is associated with worse current health and functioning. Virtually no data exist on the prevalence or consequences of trauma for PLWHA in low income nations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We recruited four cohorts of Tanzanian patients in established medical care for HIV infection (n = 228), individuals newly testing positive for HIV (n = 267), individuals testing negative for HIV at the same sites (

Pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for night eating syndrome in adults.

BACKGROUND: Pathological dietary patterns are influenced by various interacting factors, including psychoactive drugs, psychological and biological conditions, and environmental determinants, and are frequently associated with failure in conventional weight loss treatments, especially in obese individuals. Night eating syndrome (NES) is characterized by excessive food consumption at night, often linked to disrupted circadian rhythms and psychosocial triggers. METHODS: This review evaluated pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for NES in adults. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) co

Non-Physical Disease Facets in Spondyloarthritis: An ASAS Health Index-Based Analysis between Psoriatic Arthritis and Axial Spondyloarthritis.

Background: Psychosocial health is a key driver of quality of life (QoL) in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), but it is often overlooked in clinical practice. We aimed to analyze this aspect of QoL by using the Assessment of SpA International Society−Health Index (ASAS HI) in both SpA phenotypes. Patients and methods: One hundred and eleven patients with axSpA and 90 with PsA were consecutively recruited from two rheumatology centers. In both populations, the categories of stress handling (ASAS HI items #11 and 17) and emotional functions (ASAS HI item #13) were an

Patterns of Parenting and their Associations with Bereaved Children's Maladaptive and Adaptive Functioning.

The parent-child relationship influences children's mental health (e.g., posttraumatic stress symptoms, psychosocial difficulties) and adaptive outcomes (e.g., posttraumatic growth, resilience) following the death of a loved one. The current study employed a person-centered approach to identify patterns of parenting and their associations with bereaved children's functioning. This study included 112 bereaved children, aged 8-17 (Mage = 12.41, SD = 2.58; 52.2% female), recruited from community organizations in the MidSouth, United States. A latent profile analysis was used to identify parenting

"This experience cannot be erased… it left a deep hole in me": perceptions of mothers of childhood cancer survivors on adapting to a new normal.

AIMS: This study explored how mothers of childhood cancer survivors (CCS) adapt to daily life following hospitalization, with emphasis on establishing a new sense of normal. It sought to provide insight into mothers' unique experiences and perceptions of post-treatment life. Specifically, it examined which resilience factors support psychosocial well-being and effective coping and which contribute to maladaptive functioning. METHODS: Guided by a phenomenological and interpretive epistemological stance, this qualitative study entailed in-depth, semi-structured interviews with five Estonian mot

Coping with an Uncertain or Poor Cancer Prognosis as an Adolescent or Young Adult: A Cross-Sectional Cluster Analysis.

BACKGROUND: A subgroup of adolescent and young adult patients (AYAs; 18 to 39 years at diagnosis) face an uncertain or poor cancer prognosis (UPCP). Previous qualitative research identified dual coping pathways in this population: engagement in life versus the reality of premature death. This study examines whether similar psychosocial profiles can be identified through quantitative data, aiming to differentiate patient experiences and identify characteristic features of each cluster. Additionally, this study examines the association between cluster membership and social support needs to under

Applying the Rapid OPPERA Algorithm to Predict Persistent Pain Outcomes Among a Cohort of Women Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery.

Persistent postmastectomy pain after breast surgery is variable in duration and severity across patients, due in part to interindividual variability in pain processing. The Rapid OPPERA Algorithm (ROPA) empirically identified 3 clusters of patients with different risk of chronic pain based on 4 key psychophysical and psychosocial characteristics. We aimed to test this type of group-based clustering within in a perioperative cohort undergoing breast surgery to investigate differences in postsurgical pain outcomes. Women (N = 228) scheduled for breast cancer surgery were prospectively enrolled i
