Evaluation of mast cells in periapical cysts, dentigerous cysts, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors.

BACKGROUND: Several cell types are associated with the development of cystic and tumoral odontogenic lesions. Among inflammatory cells, mast cells can be associated with their pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to analyze mast cells in periapical cysts, dentigerous cysts, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors. METHODS: Tissue sections were submitted to toluidine blue staining and immunohistochemistry with antibody anti-tryptase (clone G3). Mast cells were quantitated using Image-Pro Plus software to obtain the mean number of mast cells in three regions: epithelial, superficial portion of t

Autogenous Transplantation of an Immature Undersized Third Molar to Rehabilitate a Cyst-associated Lateral Incisor Defect: A 3-Year Case Report.

Severe periapical cysts frequently result in tooth loss with concomitant severe alveolar bone destruction, precluding immediate implant placement. Autogenous tooth transplantation, which involves transplanting the patient's own tooth to the recipient site, offers a biological approach to reconstruct both the dentition and supporting bone structures. This report presents a 25-year-old female with a mobile, discolored maxillary right lateral incisor (#12) exhibiting grade 3 mobility due to a large periapical cyst (extending to #14 on cone-beam computed tomography) with root developmental arrest,

Periapical foreign body findings - histological and radiological comparison.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify the perceptibility of periapical foreign materials in imaging compared with histopathology. We hypothesized that dentoalveolar imaging is sufficient to detect periapical foreign bodies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Radiological and histopathological records of patients diagnosed with periapical granuloma or radicular cyst from 2000 to 2013 were evaluated retrospectively. Patients with histologically verified foreign bodies were included in the study and their pathological samples and radiological images were reviewed. The outcome variable was radiologically det…

Differentiation of periapical granulomas and cysts by using dental MRI: a pilot study.

The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether periapical granulomas can be differentiated from periapical cysts in vivo by using dental magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Prior to apicoectomy, 11 patients with radiographically confirmed periapical lesions underwent dental MRI, including fat-saturated T2-weighted (T2wFS) images, non-contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images with and without fat saturation (T1w/T1wFS), and contrast-enhanced fat-saturated T1-weighted (T1wFS+C) images. Two independent observers performed structured image analysis of MRI datasets twice. A total of 15 diagnostic

Correlation between inflammatory infiltrate and epithelial lining in 214 cases of periapical cysts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of periapical cysts, identify their clinical and microscopic features and correlate their microscopic features with the inflammatory infiltrate present in the lesion site. A total of 214 cases were collected over a 10-year period. Clinical data, including gender, age, race, symptoms and location of the lesion, were recorded. Two independent examiners with no prior knowledge of the patients' clinical data conducted the microscopic evaluations. Statistical analyses were performed using Fisher's or chi-square tests at a 5% level of significance

Nonsurgical root canal therapy of large cyst-like inflammatory periapical lesions and inflammatory apical cysts.

It is a general belief that large cyst-like periapical lesions and apical true cysts caused by root canal infection are less likely to heal after nonsurgical root canal therapy. Nevertheless, there is no direct evidence to support this assumption. A large cyst-like periapical lesion or an apical true cyst is formed within an area of apical periodontitis and cannot form by itself. Therefore, both large cyst-like periapical lesions and apical true cysts are of inflammatory and not of neoplastic origin. Apical periodontitis lesions, regardless of whether they are granulomas, abscesses, or cysts,

[Should we or should we not extract impacted teeth?].

Do we have to remove the impacted teeth? The pathology of an impacted tooth is reviewed by the author as well as the possible complications of its removal and others treatment possibilities. Seeing the increase of pathology and operative complications owing to the age, the author propounds the management of immature impacted third molars when they are not in a propitious position or when the posterior eruption space is reduced. About the impacted teeth covered partially or completely by soft tissue, his advice consists too in removing them if they don't have the possibility to take up good pos

[Endodontic treatment of a periapical lesion causing root separation].

A case is presented of a periapical lesion of a rather large size, which produced an important separation of two inferior incisor roots. The root canal was treated, with calcium hydroxide overextending the apex. Clinic and radiographic control after two years complete reparation of the periapex.

Retrospective study of 77 patients harbouring lumbar synovial cysts: functional and neurological outcome.

BACKGROUND: Synovial cysts represent an uncommon and probably underestimated pathological entity of the degenerative lumbar spine. The authors report a retrospective analysis of the clinical presentation, radiological studies and operative findings in 77 patients surgically treated for symptomatic lumbar synovial cysts at their institution. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Between January 1992 and June 1998, a total of 77 patients presenting with symptomatic lumbar synovial cysts were operated on in the author's department. Operative procedure, complications, results and pathological findings were corre

A diagnostic approach to lytic lesions of the mandible.

Fifty seven patients with histologically proven cyst-like lesions of the mandible are reviewed. The importance of combining radiographic with scintigraphic imaging is stressed. These two imaging modalities are complementary in demonstrating both the biological activity and the extent of the lesion. In osteomyelitis the bone scan, which is more sensitive than the radiograph, is also the method of choice in assessing the result of treatment.

Case Report: SPECT-CT-guided minimally invasive transverse process resection for Bertolotti syndrome.

Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are a common congenital anomaly that often manifests as chronic low back or radicular pain, a condition clinically referred to as Bertolotti syndrome. One specific cause of Bertolotti syndrome is pseudoarticulation of the L5 transverse process with the sacrum or ilium due to LSTV. Although conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography can identify structural changes, they provide limited functional information regarding sites of active arthropathy. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT-CT) enables the localization of

Ectopic production of hair keratin constitutes Rushton's hyaline bodies in association with hematogenous deposits.

A Rushton's hyaline body (HB) is a concretion occasionally found in odontogenic cysts. Unspecified substances produced by the lining epithelium or derived from blood components have been suggested as possible causes of HB formation, but the origin of HBs is still elusive. This study aimed to clarify the origin of HBs. Ten specimens with HBs were obtained from 400 odontogenic cysts. HBs were stained by orcein and Congo red. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that HBs were positive for hair keratin and keratin 17. Hair keratin was concentrated in HBs, and cells with hair keratin expression
